JerseyKrissi72 -> Ladies: help me out with this one. (1/11/2007 7:15:23 AM)

Yesterday I had an appointment with my gynecologist and got good news, my last pap smear came back normal[:D] so I don't need to go back until six months..but because i will be 35 this year he suggested that I get my first mammogram this year...are they as painful as people claim they are? I understand the importance of them that is why I will get mine this year...how is the procedure done?

My mother went through ovarian cancer and is a survivor thank God so I find it very important to keep an eye on my health..I am thankful that noone else in my family has suffered with cancer but still, it's always better to be safe than sorry..

Mammograms are no brainers.  Not really all that painful and only take a few minutes at the most.

I just had my first mammogram and actually, I didn't think it was painful at all. I really think it depends on the person, the time of month and the technician.

Krissi,

Mine was somewhat more painful as I have large breasts with dense tissue.  They had to squish them more than usual.  I was warned by the doctor that this would probably be the case and he told me to take a couple of painkillers (like ibuprophen) before I got there.  Might not be a bad idea.

OK im not a woman. with mom- the med specialist bedside manner made all the difference.

One thing here...at any point as a paitient you are free to refuse treatment. YOU are the boss. YOU hold the key.

I dread the colon test- and may not ever have one. bad i know.

In the past- I have made a list of all my concerns before a dr visit..this way- I got in all the info. Even if i handed the paper over to the nurse.

I had my first mamogram when I was 28 years old...they found a lump but it turned out to be nothing Thank GOD.  However I did learn that I have very fiberous tissue in my breasts.  I have large breasts and although the pain was not unbearable, it was painful none the less.  It didn't require a pain killer of any kind because the pain was only for the moment those 2 pieces of plexiglass had me squished beyond anything normal.  Don't be afraid, in my experience its never as bad as someone else proclaims it to be.

The equipment used to give many maamograms has been "upgraded" so as not to squish the breasts quite as much as it used to do - even when it did that (really flatten them, I really never thought it hurt that much (and I am pretty much a pain wimp) - I wouldn't worry - it's not a big deal. Promise. On a "pain scale" of 1-10, I'd rate it a 1 or 2.

How it's done (at least for me) is this: You stand (or sit on a chair) so your chest is in front of the Mammogram machine. Two metal plates on the machine, on either side of your breast (of whichever breast they are taking the picture of at the moment) are squeezed on each side by the metal plates, until your breast flattens out like a pancake. Then they take the picture.

The entire procedure lasts about 10 seconds for each breast. It's not a big deal. Really. At least I never thought so. But - I would not have it done during a time of the month that you could be suffering from breast tenderness (during your period) - because it might really hurt then (I don't know, I never had one at that time, but am assuming it would be more uncomfortable).
