The equipment used to give many maamograms has been "upgraded" so as not to squish the breasts quite as much as it used to do - even when it did that (really flatten them, I really never thought it hurt that much (and I am pretty much a pain wimp) - I wouldn't worry - it's not a big deal. Promise. On a "pain scale" of 1-10, I'd rate it a 1 or 2. How it's done (at least for me) is this: You stand (or sit on a chair) so your chest is in front of the Mammogram machine. Two metal plates on the machine, on either side of your breast (of whichever breast they are taking the picture of at the moment) are squeezed on each side by the metal plates, until your breast flattens out like a pancake. Then they take the picture. The entire procedure lasts about 10 seconds for each breast. It's not a big deal. Really. At least I never thought so. But - I would not have it done during a time of the month that you could be suffering from breast tenderness (during your period) - because it might really hurt then (I don't know, I never had one at that time, but am assuming it would be more uncomfortable). - Susan
