Question?
Someone has died, was it murder?  Was it an accident?  If the person who chose the contest in the first place had done any research they would have known the potential outcome, which in my mind would be murder.
Common sense tells us they did not know.  Yet, the womans family is going to be mad.  Probably sue.  Is it a criminal case?
Do we send someone to prison the rest of their life because of ignorance?
Does it become a misdemeanor because of the ignorance they possess?

It will be interesting to follow this case as it makes its way through our justice system.  I'm sure someone is going to be held accountable.

I agree sub4hire. I am interested in the outcome of this as well.

Where does blame lie?

I have worked with the stunt coordinators for Fear Factor, and they do intensive research before having anyone participate in any contest. You would think that anyone who holds a contest as such should be held responsible to do the same kind of research.

Now what we don't know is if the contestants were given any information to state the risks, and if so, they probably had them sign something.

I guess we’ll see what happens.

the Owner and I were discussing this case and wondering if she had signed a release before entering and even if she did if it would hold up in court.

like with fraternity pranks, people keep pushing the envelope until it goes too far, I would guess that the station manager would be fired but worse he has to live with the fact that three young children have to grow up without their mother.

The outcome is almost certainly this: criminal negligence a.k.a. manslaughter. The contest itself is wrong-headed, like having a kiddie slide on your property with a 200 foot drop into a ravine at the end of it. A lawsuit is a certainty. The contest holders enticed people to do something that was fatally stupid and should have known better.

BTW, most people don't know about water intoxication any more than the average 21 year old knows that you can die of alcohol poisoning when going on those b-day binges. But the holders of the contest had a responsibility to know better - a waiver of responsibility might cover them if it specifically pointed out the fatal possibilities. Somehow I doubt such a waiver was drafted.

About how much prison time is that?  Let alone the bad publicity that is going to come from it.
I didn't know about water intoxication either until a few year's back I started seeing about 2 people die a year from it.  When it is plastered all over the news...and if you watch the news at all you learn things.  Perhaps you don't delve deeper into it the way I did.  Though you still learn things.

Remember any of these?
1995-http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/mdma/mdma_health5.shtml
2003 This one made major news, http://www.mashinc.org/resources-essay-water.html
Basic Training 1999-http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3912/is_199903/ai_n8829718

Then of course the one who also made major news was the child abuse.  They made their child drink copious amounts of water and died...a few year's back.  I see articles on it but nothing firm to add here.
Too much info to go through 1-1 on google.

If you're talking about manslaughter, that's a criminal charge, so in that case it wouldn't matter whether there was a waiver of responsibility.  (Think about it: I can't get you to sign some waiver and then blow your brains out.)  I can't imagine a radio station having a contest like this without SOME form of legal protection against civil litigation ("You agree to indemnify" blah blah blah), but who knows.

Hard to believe she only drank 64 ounces of water and it did her in.  I drink 90 while doing cardio alone.  Another 33 while in the spa...and another 33 while in the steam room.

All in the course of 3 hours at the gym.

Perhaps she had an issue beyond what any of us know of?

hehe, your body uses the water you give it when hot.  Most of the time you don't even pee any of it out for many hour's later.

Seriously... after this was in the news i kept track of what i drank over the course of a normal day (zero exercise)... almost 500 ounces! Too bad there won't be any contests like that again.
