I'm not a master (Mistress, though, when I'm feeling dominant), but wanted to put my 2 cents in. I find that it is my love that motivates me to punish/shape behaviour. While I do enjoy just giving a good beating for the fun of it, there is something special about corrective measures given in love.
As a submissive, I often feel more loved after being punished, when it was necessary, than if the person were to let behaviours slide. I feel loved and cherished to be worthy of the time and effort to reshape my behaviours/attitudes, etc. I hope that makes sense.
