If you look to religion people are going to live together so they can make it a way of live for them. You can see this in all sorts of communities. Another type of community is that they elderly are living together more and more.

What I was wondering about is there some sort of real live community that is dedicated to BDSM, D/s etc? I can imagine that people who have incorporated this in there way of live would like to live with others who have the same interest. Such a community can be based on Roman, Egyptian and or Greek communities beginning of our calendar.

Hi Dutch,
Welcome to the community here.   This idea has floated around as long as there have been more then two folks interested in any kind of lifestyle. it is natural to want to spend time with like-minded folks. And it has been tried. A few years ago, some online guy was sending out massive e-mails about forming a community on some island, no idea what happen to him, most of us did not respond.

There are households, some rather large, that live together.  The difficulty in this day is that a single living area would be hard to support many people and the diverse family and employment needed.

Perhaps the best we can create on the short side is living close to each other and coming together often. Somewhat like the clubs/groups/events all held in the larger cities.  I moved from a smaller town, to the DC area, just for the community here. I now have a large circle of lifestyle friends and family with whom i spent a lot of time with and have a home with.

Due to family and work, it would be hard to live all together in one housing complex, but we are in the area together.

Dutch, what are you looking for? I know this was just an idea, but what part about the community living do you think the most about?

Thank you for your comments,
A few weeks ago a saw a program about a selfsupporting community, that was based on religion. it came into my mind that this would also be possible for other types of communities. Because I am interested in BDSM the connection was made.

Hi Vince

It could be a great idea - but in my view it would be doomed to failure.

The problem with people in general is, they tend to reproduce in the right circumstances, and their offspring are unsuitable witnesses to such an environment. It would take under a year from the first births, (if no offspring were already present), for law enforcement and social work organisations to be taking interest in my view, and shortly over that for a Waco style situation to ensue.

The other problem with people in general is, that it doesnt usually take long in such an environment for all manner of partner swapping to be going on - often behind the backs of the other partners, and then for a round of splits/divorces and new partnerships/marriages to follow on. Nothing unusual of course in our society, but in the context of a closed community it would create a pressure cooker of jealousies, resentments and bitter infighting that in the outside world is defused by way of distance, but in this situation could only end in disaster.

Those are my two main issues with it really - though I guess if one took committed monogamous childless couples, had them all "fixed" and passed out CBs on entry, they could be overcome!

Interesting idea, and one I've often pondered myself.

The problem with BDSM in this context lies in its wide, inclusive nature. There are countless shades of the practice, all with differing philosophical paths that do often converge to cross common ground, but likewise splinter into so many different and distinct directions. An obvious example might be Male Supremacy vs. Female Supremacy. I think most would agree that before a society can move forward, all must agree on its basic rules. Having a living community of people devoted simply to saluting the overarching "leather" tenets of BDSM wouldn't make it tight enough, in my estimation; you would need a foundation of beliefs, of rules and perhaps even ritual to enforce, enrich and bond its members. The gate keeping would have to be very tight in order to keep people with antithetical beliefs from eroding the stability of the community.

In short, said group of people would need a specific direction of strong convictions to keep them together. I don't think it's impossible to do, but it would be difficult to start and maintain, considering how at odds such a hypothetical community would be to the larger state in which it resided.

Yes at the minimum i think you would have to group by Male or Femme Domme just as starters.
