AWittyDuo -> Rope for Nawa Shibari (1/16/2007 8:13:43 PM)

My sir and I are exploring the delights of Japanese ritual binding (often referred to as Nawa Shibari) A question, for those of you who have partaken, what kind of did you use?  I want to surprise my Sir and show him what a good whore I am by placing a spool of rope at his feet when next I see him.

In addition, is there anything I should do prior to presenting it to him so he can tie me up with it right away?

Thanks in advance for your help ! [:)]

Oh BOY.  ROPE!  FINALLY something I know SOMETHING about.

Well, miss of the Witty Duo, you can go the "authentic" route, and get some Japanese Hemp rope.  BUT it MUST be conditioned before use, and frankly I find it a bit tricky to work with.  But if you are sticklers for authenticity, NOTHING looks as good.  One of the best sources is the Twisted Monk -- LOVE his stuff.  www.twistedmonk.com

But I think I'd start with some good "plastic" rope, and that means nylon or polypropolene.  Rope freaks (and I count myself in that august group) can debate rope quality, lengths, diameters...hell, even COLORS.  But for beginning, if you want to do it right AND support some truly good scene people, hike your little Shibari craving self to www.rainbowrope.com.  This stuff is good, fairly priced, and you get a TON of good info with whatever you buy.  Don't get the flat-braid, it isn't for beginners.  The cotton is yummy, but (1) harder to use for a novice and (2) doesn't "clean up" as well.  Order a hundred feet of the MFP in your favorite colors, and tie away!

Two more plugs:  There are a ton of websites to learn about rope bondage, and more and more books out there.  But one of the most current, informative, and just plain "Real" is run by lynn at www.ropefashions.com

And, last but never, ever least, just about the time you two are craving more knowledge and want to see some gorgeous rigging, meet wonderful kinky people and have a great time, you'll come to Chicago for SHIBARICON 2007.  There is NOTHING like it.  www.shibaricon.com  See you in may!  and happy rigging.

E.

(FULL DISCLOSURE:  I don't make a dime off of shibaricon, but I'm sort of "connected".  But I wouldn't be connected, if I didn't believe, right?)

I haven't used it myself, but  I've heard nothing but good things about the rope from twistedmonk.com from people who do use it.

NAWA!!! NAWA!!!

Ahem, well, I have to say that my BF and I have used a soft nylon rope from Wal Mart. It works, but I think I'm going to make use of some of these links [;)]

I've seen all sorts of rope used- everything from nylon line to hemp rope (I think the official term is "manilla") to that piece-of-junk yellow crap that's only good for temporary clotheslines. Safety concerns aside, its really your and your Master's preference.

Well, that's not completely true. You can definately do bondage with nylon or other plastic ropes, but you can't really do "Shibari" with it. Plastic not only fits the esthetics of shibari, many shibari techniques depend on using high friction ropes and that excludes nylon.

So, in answer to the opening post, if you want to explore shibari, you should buy hemp or jute. These are strong, high friction ropes you can use - but as other people mentioned, they do need preparation unless you buy them ready for use. Cotton is not strong enough and too stretchy for shibari, nylon doens't have enough friction. Then again, if your goal is more bondage in general, they might be cheaper alternatives.

Ready-for-use hemp and jute can be ordered at the aforementioned websites and at http://www.bindme.nl

Slipstreme -> RE: Rope for Nawa Shibari (1/30/2007 1:09:44 PM)

I recently got some nice rope from JoAnns that is 80%cotton 20%raylon blend. Found a nice link (that I dont have right now) that listed good ropes. I might try to get some hemp or jute later down the line.

I love the rope from kinkyropes.  His flax is absoulty yummy.  I have spent a lot of time tied up in it.  I recently got to try some Brivarian Blonde from twisted monk and it is so nice.  Very soft and smells wonderful.  If you really want to get into shibari, put out the money for good rope and take some classes.  it will be worth your time and money.  I have a friend who has gotten me into it and has turned me into a rope slut.  Not a bad thing really and I kind of like it....lol.  It is becoming an addiction though.    God....I love the smell of rope.  There is nothing that compairs to the smell of hemp, flax or jute....Yummy.

subboy603 -> RE: Rope for Nawa Shibari (1/31/2007 7:00:03 AM)

True, if you're gonna get technical then you probably can't use many synthetic ropes for the high-friction stuff in shibari. Still, things I've had pretty good results with simple nylon rope for simple things like rope dresses and other "regular" rope bondage.
