It’s funny but it is also tragic because it is all so true.  Further evidence that we as a society are abandoning common sense and practical judgments.

Concerning the guns, something that might interest you: My grandfather owned some rural land with a schoolhouse on it that was used in the late 1800's to the 1950's. I once talked to a woman who had taught there during the 1920's.  She told us that the boys would bring their guns to school so they could hunt on the way there and on the way back, and the schoolhouse had a gun rack in it!  These were poor families and not all of the students could afford to bring a lunch so sometimes she wold cook the morning catches for the class on the schoolhouse’s cast iron stove.

The question is not if it is funny which it is but are they all based on truths????? I see a few that are

The only two I'm not absolutely sure of is the gun rack one (Only because I was raised in a different region).. and the fire cracker one.

We must have common friends. I received this in email last night too along with this:

"Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end."

MsOpal -> RE: Changing Times (1/18/2007 11:52:01 AM)

I'm not sure these all have to be absolutely true, the fact is that they are all possible given today's atmosphere of "danger, danger the sky is falling" everytime something happens.  I grew up in a rural ranching community and it is a fact many of us had hunting rifles in our posession on school grounds and a lot of times the teachers wanted to see the new ones, and heck, even take a target shot at a fence post or beer can (said beer cans found in the bed of another pickup).  Yes, we used leftover firecrackers to blow up ant hills (and smoke bombs to blow up outhouses and school toilets).  I will refrain from recounting a true story involving a leftover roman candle and the posterior end of an unconsenting bovine.

The one about "Jeffrey" not sitting still in class is sadly very true.  The one about teachers no longer being able to comfort younger kids is true. Of course,  OTC, non-prescription medications have not been allowed on school grounds for a long time now.  Remember when girls who had cramps could take paragoric at school, right out of their purse?  Heck, who even remembers being able to buy paragoric?  Worrying about disciplining your own child is true.

What about the news story a few years ago where a young boy (maybe kinder???) ran over and kissed a girl classmate ar play time?  he was sent home, his parents had to come to a conferrence, the little girl was sent to counseling, his parents were sued by hers .... good grief!!!   Sadly it is often true that when the pendulem swings, it goes too far.

That reminds me of something my Grandfather – hands down the wisest man I ever knew – said: "Son, if you have a piece of shit and you pour perfume on it, then wrap it up in a pretty pink bow – it’s still a piece of shit."

CalliopePurple -> RE: Changing Times (1/18/2007 7:23:10 PM)

Is it wrong to wish that I was born in the 50's or early 60's so I could have experienced some of those things? I'll admit to sneaking OTC medication to school when I had a terrible cold, and once I even brought the antibiotics I was on for pneumonia because I didn't want the hassle of going through the school nurse for it.

ladysekhmetka -> RE: Changing Times (1/19/2007 4:19:20 AM)

Feh, Just goes to show, people are crazy... I could stand on my soapbox for days on these little issues, but I do have work in an hour and half... but one thing, I had a friend who was expelled for carrying Midol around. I'm sorry, most girls don't like the idea of getting a permission slip from their 'mommy', taking it to the nurse, and going sometimes halfway across a large campus (like the school I went too... It was HUGE) to stand in line for a pain pill, when they can attempt to sneak it in the bathroom or something.
