Carbs may explain ethnic variations in cholesterol

Ethnic differences in levels of HDL, the "good" cholesterol, may be due, at least in part, to diet, a new study from Canada suggests.

South Asians ate the most carbohydrate and had the lowest HDL cholesterol levels, while Chinese individuals ate the least carbohydrate and had the highest levels of the beneficial blood fat, Dr. Anwar T. Merchant of the Population Health Research Institute in Hamilton, Ontario and colleagues found.

I'm disappointed the study didn't differentiate between "good" (whole grain) carbs and "bad" (mainly white) carbs. Most of those on my South Beach message board who have followed the South Beach plan over a long period of time have significantly raised our HDL and lowered our LDL.  Don't know if it's due to lower consumption of trans fats and saturated fats or to switching from bad to good carbs, or increasing our exercise.  My guess it's a combination of those.

Proudsub, you are probably right about that, it is a combination of these things. I am curious to see now that Americans have been educated about transfats, are cutting it out of their diets, if we as a nation will automatically begin to shed pounds. I would not be surprised if this was the case. Look at what the French eat (in moderation), and they are thin and have low incidence of heart disease.

I don't know about shedding pounds but it certainly should help lower heart disease in the long run.

Hmmm. If you follow the Atkins/Bernstein line of thought, there are very few carbs of any sort that promote good health; but again, each individual reacts differently in some cases. All very interesting, none the less [:D].
