This is the same type of logic used against Kennedy because he was Catholic.
There are people in this country that are treated shabbily, as well. The argument can be made that some of this poor treatment is due to cultural values in the way the people were raised, or, what they believe. Since some of these people manage to get a lot of press/attention--guess what--they're what a lot of the world think of when the word 'American' is said.
His religion, or lack thereof, shouldn't be a consideration unless he is a fanatic about it to the point where he cannot make an objective decision.
Not to be a pedantic nit, but if he was a follower of Islam, he would be described as Islamic or Muslim, not as an Islam. Islam is a religion, not a direct noun. :D
Most Muslims aren't terrorists waiting to blow up our buildings, or, kill our soldiers. Most Christians aren't hate-mongering fundamentalists spouting racist, divisive, homophobic, or, misogynistic tripe. The types that are are generally fanatics who make the most noise and get the most press.
Barack Obama has shown that he can see both sides of an issue, and has the skills to work as a mediator and get the sides to meet to get things done. That being said, I don't like the idea of him being President quite yet because I don't feel he has enough national experience. Some would say that's a point in his favor, but I personally would prefer a bit more experience on the national stage.
