Time to take another stab at converting NorthernGent to dark, depressing American music. Too long has he lived in the light ... or so says me. [;)]

These guys are pretty clean cut and undoubtedly almost gay enough to be British.

I thought this band sucked, until I saw them live.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GHa63ieqXo

This is actually a UK band that sort of bombed over there, but did well over here. I've also seen them live, and they were killer.

This is the band fronted by Kurt Cobain's squeeze ... needed that drug money after he died. They got raked over the coals pretty bad for gravy-training off Nirvana, but later it was discovered that Courtney actually wrote a lot of Nirana's lyrics. This band also includes amazingly talented Canadian Melissa Auf Der Maur on bass (Smashing Pumpkins) who is starting to get some play with her solo career.

caitlyn, I'm off out for a few pints and what have you but I'll be back later for a gander.

If there's any of those Rocky ones feel free to despatch them before I come back [;)] the rest can stay.

Cheers for the effort.

LadyEllen -> RE: More Conversion of NG (1/20/2007 2:03:07 PM)

Hey. We dont need dark, depressing music thanks - we have the weather to get us down.

Except for those Brits who are gay. Something should indeed be done about undue merriness in anyone living here, as they clearly do not understand the seriousness of the situation. However, therapy by way of tax return forms will be arriving in letterboxes throughout Britain in the near future, thus removing the need for depressing music. If depressing music should be required though, then we have adequate access to this already, in a form specially adapted to the British market, by way of back catalogues of The Smiths and Morrissey.

E

PS - not really C! Good for you!

dcnovice -> RE: More Conversion of NG (1/20/2007 2:08:46 PM)

But you guys have the monarchy to cheer you up!

NorthernGent -> RE: More Conversion of NG (1/20/2007 5:32:59 PM)

caitlyn, you need to get a hold of these yanks because your music is shit. Honestly, what a load of garbage.

Apart from this, but then again these idolise the stones so they're almost English.

What a bit of music though.

I love Justine even if she is Damon Alban's secondhand skirt, she reminds me of a fellow student at art school that used to give me BJs in the studios for helping her with her sculpture.

Hey caitlyn, not a very charitable comment on my part considering you went to the trouble to post some links. Apologies - you know I love your music really [;)] Especially Kings of Leon and a few more :-)

caitlyn -> RE: More Conversion of NG (1/21/2007 6:09:48 AM)

No worries ... music is an excellent thing to slam people over. [;)]

I think you're right ... you aren't going to get American music. I think we perhaps place a much higher value on lyrical creativity and instrumental skill, and less on catchy tunes. I like a lot of your music, believe me ... but primarily because you can dance to it. What your putting out these days, isn't exactly on the Pink Floyd level, as far as message.

Maybe we Americans live in a shocking country, and shock value catches our eye. I'm stunned that you didn't like Hole ... a band with two very good musicians and a very talented writer in Courtney Love ... but that you like KofL, a band with lyrics that would get you a C- in a Middle School poetry class, and a guitar player that I could replace, given about a month to learn the songs (and a better quality electric).[;)]

I guess this attempt failed ... but we will keep trying.

enigmaslave -> RE: More Conversion of NG (1/21/2007 6:27:37 AM)

Ok test these waters, 1st up is 2 videos from a Canadaina Band from Vancouver:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGpWxalKErA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgRL4DLqKmY

this band im sure every one knows, but enjoy the moody sound of this song and the Vilolator album
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHuqCdPk1yA

And this is something I made, think of it as a slide show set to music, featuring the music of Massive attack

LadyEllen -> RE: More Conversion of NG (1/21/2007 6:50:40 AM)

Caitlyn, not all is lost in the UK you know?

We have more than manufactured boy/girl bands and overproduced crap - its just that the talented and artistic get nowhere in the current climate.

Thank goodness for Kerrang

E

caitlyn -> RE: More Conversion of NG (1/21/2007 6:59:07 AM)

Absolutely keep them coming enigmaslave. Delerium is pretty popular here ... lots of good stuff coming out of Canada these days.

LadyE ... maybe you could send all your wackos our way. We'll make stars out of 'em. [;)][;)]

Right, I've had another crack through these and honest, adult assessment:

These guys are pretty clean cut and undoubtedly almost gay enough to be British.

Bland and depressing. Sounds like he's sat in the dark contemplating doing himself in. Not my personal taste.

I thought this band sucked, until I saw them live.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GHa63ieqXo

Okish but it's standard fayre. There must have been 100 million other pieces of work sounding exactly the same as this.

This is actually a UK band that sort of bombed over there, but did well over here. I've also seen them live, and they were killer.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COCuS1q_Lcs&mode=related&search=

Yeah, I remember these - they had a bit of a following around 97 - mostly from student, veggie, left-wing types. Not my taste though.

This is the band fronted by Kurt Cobain's squeeze ... needed that drug money after he died. They got raked over the coals pretty bad for gravy-training off Nirvana, but later it was discovered that Courtney actually wrote a lot of Nirana's lyrics. These remind of me Sheryl Crow, Crowded House etc - we have bands like this over here such as Keane but it's so predictable - no energy to it, ten-a-penny type music.

This band is a very Northern English sound.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRir5AyF6dQ

How would the yanks take to this?

caitlyn -> RE: More Conversion of NG (1/21/2007 7:53:38 AM)

I could get used to this group, to be sure.

I'm afraid you're losing me when you compare a highly skilled writer and one of the world's top bass players ... to an artist that once did a song called "All I want to do, is have some fun." [;)]

Good work :-)

I think you're right ... you aren't going to get American music.

We do get some of your music. In particular, your soul......and your dance music caught on like wildfire here in the 80s. The likes of Jeff Mills and Joey Beltram are legends here. Possibly a bit before your time but Jeff Mills was definitely from Detriot and I think Joey Beltram was from Chicago.

We (being the people I know) just don't get your college type bands, that's all.

If I sat down and went through all the American music that sold well here since the 1920s there'd be loads of the stuff. We're more than happy to take the best of your music but you can keep the rest. Fair enough, if you ask me.

Plus, there's a personal taste issue here. When it comes to bands, I like a British sound but Nirvana and Guns and Roses were massive here - they're not for me but I'm not speaking for Britain here.

I think we perhaps place a much higher value on lyrical creativity and instrumental skill, and less on catchy tunes. I like a lot of your music, believe me ... but primarily because you can dance to it.

In general, I wouldn't even hazard a guess if this is right or wrong. In term of my taste, you're probably onto something - the link I put up actually used to be a dance act called sub-sub and it is almost like dance music with a guitar.

Yeah, Kings of Leon - I make you right - they and others like them have a basic sound that is easy enough to knock out and is boosted by decent electrics/sound system. Different bands for different moments though. If I want good quality lyrics I'll listen to The Smiths or The Jam etc. Kings of Leon - I like the energy and the sound - as you say catchy music.

I guess this attempt failed ... but we will keep trying.

You can't buy persistence [;)]

What about Neil Young, Arcade Fire, Leonard  Cohen......

Didn't realise Donald Sutherland is Canadian. I'm fairly sure Christopher Plummer was born in Canada so he's got to be in the list.

Isn't k.d. lang Canadian too?
