We had a thread here a while back about common traits that a lot of dominant women seem to share.  I wonder if there's another one...  Is it my imagination, or do many dominant women seem to list opera as a "like" or "love" in their profile?  I mean, more than you'd expect if you just sample the population in general.

Granted, your average dominant female is OF COURSE likely to be much more intelligent, cultured, and sophisticated, etc. etc. [;)] so maybe it's not all THAT surprising....

Btw, as a musician (although not necessarily a big opera fan), I think this is a great thing...  I'm just curious how it relates to a woman's dominant tendencies -- opera's a very passionate, very dramatic, very highly aesthetic art form.  I remember a teacher in high school telling us that opera is considered the highest of all the art forms, because it sythesizes music, literature, drama, dance, and the visual arts.  I wonder if that's got anything to do with it.

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this, or if people agree/disagree...

A full orchestra? In my bathroom?

I'd have to start selling tickets to pay them, so the neighbours wouldnt like that. And they'd have to pay, as they get to listen to me anyway even without an orchestra.

I'll check the zoning laws and let you know

If you get a full orchestra in your bathroom, I'll come sing with you.  I am a dramatic soprano and I am pretty good. You'll have no problem selling tickets.

But, back on topic......curious about the prevalance of opera interest among dominant women....maybe that is why people get confused about me (being a sub)

What many people fail to notice about opera is that is it so emotional and so powerful. For me, as a singer, it is a very visceral experience. When I sing on stage...at times I am really vulnerable and laid open and at others I am very charge.  It is an opportunity to expereience somethings that I am not yet able to in real life.....but it help me practice.

Opera is lovely. It's not what I specialized in as a singer, but I do enjoy it.

I have a vague feeling that there is a higher incidence of ex-performers as dominants in BDSM groups. I've met several dominant or top identified people who referred to some kind of theatrical background. It makes some amount of sense--public play is performative, as is private play to a lesser degree, so people with some performance training would be better at it. I'm one of the lower female voice types, a dramatic mezzo, and my voice has been remarked on as dominantly sexy, but that won't explain the dominant coloratura sopranos. Indeed, opera--even a serious fondness for it--certainly doesn't signal dominance, even among kinky people! A decidedly submissive woman I've known is an excellent lyric soprano. Also, I met my earliest BDSM partners in theatrical circles--though neither I nor they used the letters to talk about what we did, we just regarded it as rough or kinky sex.

If indeed there is a correlation of opera and female dominance, I would think you could attribute it to two things. 1) Many dominant women seem to be better-versed in arts and culture than the general female public. 2) Some talent for performance seems to correlate with effective socially active dominance.

Opera is ok but I don't go out of my way to see it. I might go see "Aida" with Fox this semester if we can afford it but not because it's opera but because it's an "ancient" setting. IUB has an excellent music program, all types of music, but we don't go to many events because we have so much other stuff going on in our lives.

ahem I enjoy pavarotti, placido domingo & jose carreras especially when they're three together but I've never been able to stand female opera artists they hurt my ears...I hoooooooooooope operas aint some fancypancy for all domina's[&:] scary..

I have a feeling that it's also an oportunity to get dressed up and go out. We like to do these things and don't often get to do them.

A funny aside: While having a conversation with my first husband about how we never did anything I wanted to do, he asked, "Well, what it is that you want to do?"

To which, I replied, "I'd like to dress up and go to the Opera."

"I don't like the Opera. It's like they're singing in another language or somethin'."

After my dead pan look, I tried, very hard, to not laugh in his face and explained that most Operas were in Italian and that most people kinda have to keep up with it like a Cartoon, getting the story from the action. We ended up getting box seats to Phantom. He had a good time.

I personally prefer impressionist art and forms of writings and canvass to sounds like opera or orchestra.  Though I did manage tickets to a lovely opera over the holiday and attended with a group of friends.

Hmm, I wondre how many subs list enjoying opera.

I can enjoy opera, although it is far more fun to sing than to listen to.  However, seeing a live production is usually another thing altogether.  I adore live opera, which provides the opportunity to dress up, see live theatre which is nearly always a delight for me, and hear lovely voices which enjoying sets and costumes.  I prefer Mozart to Wagner, but it can all be fun.

I will never forget my first opera - a one-act by Puccini called Suor Angelica.

There's an aria near the end where a young nun, after drinking a cup of poison, realizes her sin will preclude her from seeing the illegitimate son she gave up before entering the convent. Falling to her knees, begs the Virgin Mary to be forgiven.

Those raw, human emotions, synthesized and distilled into moments of high drama absolutely appeal to me. It seems there is such a parallel between that and the moment when a lover, on his knees and in every way naked, kisses your hand and thanks you for the gift of your attentions.

So much goes into that moment. So much precedes and follows. But that moment is an absolute gem.

For me, opera is an avenue - albeit through allegory and music rather than restraints and floggers - to explore the human condition. What’s not to love?

after attending my 1st performance during my senior year in high school, i love classical especially opera - the passion, love, death better than reading a romance novel. currently into Andre Rieu. just a few of my favorites...

Puccini's La Boheme and Madame Butterfly - saw Aida at the Civic Opera House when it was touring in Chicago.

Mozart's Don Giovanni and Le Nozze di Fiagro(the Marriage of Fiagro)

Verdi's La Triavata (the Woman Who Strayed)

Bizet's Carmen

Wagner's Die Walkure (especially Ride of the Valkyries)

I love opera and have it on CD! Remember that song the woman was singing in Saving Private Ryan? I have the soundtrack!

Kidding aside, I think BDSM is distributed across population and I expect that the ratio of dominant women who enjoy opera is similar to the ratio of vanilla women who enjoy opera.

I think the suggestion about performers enjoying BDSM shows more promise. That is, if I saw a survey that polled women who were performers and women who were not performers, and found a greater ratio of those who had dabbled with BDSM in performers, I would not be surprised.

I trained in ballet for years, and am interested in the arts, not NOT opera. 

My sub, however, loves opera. 

I dont know what that means :)

I was once at this party and heard some sounds that made me think a sub was singing opera. I went over to check it out and it turns out he was just enduring CBT.
