Status: offline 		i am wondering if anyone has read "Story of O" by Pauline Reage. Sir recently sent me a copy to read. While i am fascinated by it, it also appalls me, perhaps because some of the issues i deal with are blatant in O's life. Has Anyone who read this book have the same/different problem pop up?

Yes I read O, and it's true the first few chapters were rather edgy and hard to take. I read the censored version, so I never got to read the final chapter. I won't spoil it if you have the uncensored version, but I must say that I disagree with the ending from what I've heard. In many ways I completely understand O's perspective and journey into submission, but there are many times when I wish she'd stand up for herself.

Again, I haven't read the last chapter so I could be way off here, but I don't see any equality in her relationship with Rene or Sir Stephen. The ending makes me very sorry for her, because it seems as though she has been brainwashed and used.

However, overall I think it is a great book that delves into the thinking behind submission. I got a lot out of it. Hope you enjoy it

You mean there's somone in the lifestyle who hasn't read it? Oh, my slave informs me that she hasn't quite finished it yet LOL. Yes, it does take the lifestyle fantasy to its extremes, but it is, after all, fantasy fiction. Not sure about fencerpet's thought that the early chapters are a bit edgy, I found them the attractive parts of the book, with the later chapters going past my ideas of believeable, but then I have developed a lot since my first reading 25 years ago, or even my second reading 3 years ago, and I am not so put off by them now.

It's hard to comment on teachme's 'issues', since the profile is turned off and I can't even see whether she might be slave, submissive, or bottom. This book is a slave's mentality as far as I can tell, and will not suit all who call themselves submissive. My slave is service oriented, and finds the book attractive.

while i did learn a lot about the submission and why she did it. i, for one, would have said some thing to Renee or Sir Stephen. It seemed as though she took what ever was given or decided for her with out much concern for herself. If anyone asked me to dress as any type of animal i would want to know the who/why/what/where/and how, even though i would probably refuse even if it was just a halloween costume. Some things i think should not be taken away from a submissive/slave.
i am thinking i will have to ask Sir for persmission to speak freely when W/we discuss this book. i have developed strong opinions about it and perhaps know for what i am better suited. ~grrrr~ i have not had this strong an opinion on some thing for a long time. The fire will subside, but never die completely.

Status: offline 		Story of O is my favorite novel of all time. i can't even begin to describe how much it's meant to me, or how many wonderful things have come out of it for me, or how much trouble it's gotten me into, both good trouble and bad trouble, i'd be writing all night and i've been given the logoff signal by my owner, but i'll try to post again on this soon... But please just read it and then read it again...

Status: offline 		The Story of O is fiction, a story. Are parts of it based on something that really happened? Possibly. Is "O" the "Slave/Submissive/BDSM Guide to Life"? Hardly. It is food for thought, a starting point for discussion with a few pieces of mind candy (for some) thrown in the mix.

Teachme, did your Sir tell you why He wants yout to read the novel?

Status: offline 		I think it is more a story about submitting into slavery. O turns into a slave and does whatever they tell her, no questions asked. Maybe you are like me and don't find the idea of this kind of slavery appealing. Not everyone can, it's a tough job, bless them all. I am assuming that maybe your Sir wanted you to read it to see if you like any aspects of slavery. Be honest with him when you have the speak freely time.

Status: offline 		I wasn't appalled due to personal shared experience, but it definitely intrigued me and was intense. A lot of people don't like it because it's not a "happy ending" but I find it appropriate.

I found it in my mothers closet. :) She had a great 'closet' library.
Joy of sex, The Mandingo series of books and other erotica.

I remember that I couldn't wait for her to be out so I could find out what else was there.

Status: offline 		I took it for what it is, fiction, and I'm always more than a little bit leery of those who claim to want to live the story.

I was just beginning to explore BDSM when I read the book. I found some of it much more extreme then, than I probably would now. The one thing I truly disliked, and still do, was the ending.

Status: offline 		i read the book at 15, i was too young and naive to be bothered by anything in it. i suppose it is edgy, but nothing compared to some of the fiction i have read online. It doesn't bother me because it is fiction... and even in the context of the story, O could have gotten help if she had wanted out.

Status: offline 		It's not my favorite book but does give a few ideas to try. The ending teaches us that there are no garuntees to get what we want regardless of the sacrafice. Whatever you do, don't watch the movie series.

As already stated, the book is Fiction and exploring fantasy desires. Though I think O is based on a person or two with past experiences and could have possibly happened to certains slaves and submissives, it's over all view is for us to think before we start something. That goes for both Doms and Subs alike.

Status: offline 		I think it was decent fiction, but as with a lot of other ficticious material, it has definately created a lot of misconceptions about BDSM and D/s relationships.

Status: offline 		i have both the book and the movie...i wasn't too impressed with either but i wasn't appauled by it either, i don't find it so extreme.

Has anyone here read "Memoirs of a Geisha"? it's obviously not a bdsm book, BUT one can sort of relate to the general idea of the book. It's a fascinating read...at least i thought so...probably my all time favorite book.

Which version did you see? I haven't been impressed with any of them, but some people say they prefer to HBO version.

I found that book fascinating not only in story and character but it's resonance with me. I often feel that one of my main goals in life is to become the best courtesan/whore.

Status: offline 		Story of O was pretty good (good crotch warmer for the budding submissive teenager I was when I read it!) ... the sequel, The Chateau, absolutely sucked (like reading the financial section!)

Not that it's a novel, but i found A Different Loving quite informative. I read that when I was trying to figure out WTF i was and was doing.

Status: offline 		Sir had told me he wanted me to read it so W/we could discuss it. And that W/we did!!!! He actually called me early this morning, because He thought i had been scared or angered by the book. (He was right on some levels).
i feel better about it after W/we talked. After i have some more experience, i will reread it and see what i think then.

Status: offline 		I read it, and saw the movie, (yes, there is a movie.. it's gooooood) I loved every minute of it.
I see it as applicable to my journey into submission as food for thought, fuel for scening etc.
I would not want to live like a slave 24/7, but the highly erotic, tantalizing, sensational, mind blowing total submission would be wonderful to experience. Yes, I see it as fantasy, that can become reality and is reality for some. In the end, "O" became stronger and that is cool.
THe scene where she was with 5 Doms was cool, the scene between the two males was hot, I loved it. buttafly
