Drug addicts receiving treatment should be given shopping vouchers to help them tackle their problem, an NHS body has suggested

Hmm, not sure about this.
What do you think?

Personally, I've nothing against it - though I do wonder how it will help people to keep off drugs, and I would be concerned that as currency, a food voucher is exchangeable for money for the drugs they need. The decision on whether to eat or obtain a fix is not one over which any addict will worry overmuch.

There is this major misundertanding I feel, as to why people become addicts in the first place. Of course, some people use drugs recreationally and dont necessarily become addicts, but most people it seems to me use drugs to escape something in their lives which they cannot resolve - this could be psychological or environmental. Since the problem is insurmountable, they keep using drugs to escape it and so become addicted. The "popular" view however, is one relying on 60s stereotypes of the drug user as a drop out hippy, who deserves nothing since he/she became addicted by wilful criminality.

What I see here in this initiative is yet more evidence of government inaction on the provision of proper drug treatment (including for alcohol addiction), by way of this being next to nothing. It is far more electorally popular in middle England to regard addicts as scum and lock them up, than to provide what is needed in terms of facilities. Until proper clinics in enough numbers and of sufficient quality are provided, food vouchers are of no value whatever.

Ultimately though, we must also devote resources towards resolving the psychological and environmental problems which cause drug use and addiction in the first place. Again though, this is unpopular electorally, in a country in which the general feeling is winner takes all and the devil take the hindmost. We must have a sea change in our country to promote the oft used notion of respect throughout society - including at the uppermost levels, where the power to make things happen exists, as well as at the lower levels at which the respect agenda is directed. At the uppermost levels, there must be an understanding that it is people who make our nation, not profit and loss accounts. At the lowermost levels, there must be an appreciation of what is being offered in terms of education etc to improve one's lot and for this to be valued. Most importantly, throughout society there must be an understanding that no one becomes an addict by choice and that we are all responsible for making this country a better place to live.

This would be my concern too.

I also think that the giving of £10 vouchers is not much of an incentive to stay off drugs. I think its a half cock attempt at solving a problem which will not work.

Yep MissT. You sum it up perfectly.

Well, i don't know how it works over there, but when hardened drug addicts (as they refer to in the article) don't have money over here, they just go mug or rob (or even murder) someone for it.  i mean, i don't foresee a hardened drug addict saying 'Gee, don't have any money today....guess i'll have to go without my fix today'.  i mean, they are addicts for a reason.  i'm not saying just hand them money but addicts will find a way to get it, come hell or high water.  i guess there is no easy solution.

ADG - you may have just revealed why these vouchers are being issued.

Say an addict gets a ten pounds food voucher - they could swap this for seven pounds in cash with someone else I'd have thought, and in many place thats enough for a fix.

Whilst it is politically acceptable as a "generous and charitable" state intervention to issue food vouchers to addicts, it is not so to give them cash to buy drugs; in fact that would be political suicide.

So perhaps the aim here is to try to reduce crime by way of giving addicts the money they need so that they dont have to rob and mug others for it, but without actually giving them money?

The Welfare people I know use their Independane food card and buy steamed crabs and shrimp and sell them for half price. Then they buy beer, drugs and go to the Delaware Park Casino and gamble. They find willing buyers also, I would never be a part of the problem and buy their kids food at half price.

When i worked for our county welfare department, it was well known that food stamps went 50 cents on the dollar on the streets.  Most made the exchange for alcohol or drugs.

The referenced article says 'International trials have shown modest financial incentives can help hardened addicts stay off drugs.'

i really just didn't see the voucher as a means of getting people off of drugs.....but i suppose anything is possible.

BTW....how much is 10 pounds in US money?

Hi ADG

Not sure what the exchange rate is, but I'd guess about USD 15-00
