I thought it was very very well done... however I almost think Guillermo Del Toro (the director) tried to do too much with what he had. You have the very poignant commentary on war-torn spain and sadistic, dictator-like pyschopaths torturing and murerding with impunity. Within that storyline, you have the drama the young housekeeper endures as an underground informant for the guerrillas. Next you have a heartbreaking family drama, intense and dark and disturbing. You really feel for this poor woman and her young daughter. On top of all that, you have the supernatural, ethereal, mystical storyline.
I think Del Toro is an amazing director. I also think the movie was great.. But if he had concentrated on any one single storyline, I think it would have been phenominal.
If you appreciate movies for the cinematic efforts, you will adore this movie. The sets are gorgeous, and the acting is nothing short of brilliant. But if you like being to concentrate really heavily on a particular plot element, you may feel a bit overwhelmed, as it does have a slight tendency to jump around. If you're a moviegoer who picks at all the little nuances, you will like this movie as there are a lot of them. I'll give you a hint: Watch the Faun very very very carefully.
The gore was soooo well done. I watched Hostel and laughed. Thinking, in my little medic mind : That wouldnt happen, niether would that, that blood is obviously corn syrup... etc etc etc. However as I watched Pan's Labyrinth... I was shuddering. The true sick sociopathy of the "villain" was marvelously acted, and it made you scared for his victims.
.... lol ok I'm done now. But yes I seriously reccomend the movie.
