I'm also on the path of loosing weight, have lost about 50 lbs or so in the last few years, just has become a bit more important healthwise recently for me. Some things I find working for me is that I am not thinking of it as a diet, but rather, my new way of living. I am kind of doing the low carb/sugar thing, which works for me... making sure I get lots of fiber in my carbohydrate servings too, which given the fact I came from an Irish household is quite difficult -- I tend to not even eat potatoes anymore because I just can't be trusted with eating a small portion Also, since keeping my blood sugars at a constant level is very important for me personally, I have found that I need to eat smaller meals, like I have some egg beaters for breakfast and like an hour or so later, I have a lowfat/low sugar yogurt, then lunch and mid-day have like an apple/celery and a piece of cheese or something similar. I also used to never eat before bed, but, discovered if I don't have something light before bed, my blood sugars spike by morning, which is not good for me healthwise. I will say that everyone is different, you have to find the way of eating that works for you. I also know I have to live in a real world, it takes a little planning, but, if I think I'm going to be having something not considered "good" (i.e., desert on vacation), I make compensations throughout the day: Skip a bread serving, etc. For exercise, I'm lucky to live in a city where I walk to work, so, what I've done is take the longer way home to add at least 15 minutes to my routine without feeling it at all... it is a bit hard in the winter in Boston, so, I walk through a mall or I use a stair stepper when I get home and lift soup cans while on it... hehehe(or take the stairs instead of the elevator works too). If it's nice out, I go for a walk at lunch too. I end up walking about 45 minutes a day. What also is working well for me is accountability. Given some recent health concerns (beginning of problems if I don't fix it now), I'm seeing my nurse practicioner who is also my nutritionist every 3 months and will be starting a nutritional counseling service through my health insurance (just over the phone), but, knowing I have some accuontability without feeling it's a put-down, is great for me. Also, my Master lost weight on the South Beach Diet, and so, we sometimes have conversations about diet and nutrition, He doesn't judge and likes me the way I am, but has been a great help too! Good luck to you and I think maybe talking to a doctor to find out what you need to do to be healthy is a good start anyhow.
