"What is pain?" Very good question. In the classic, vanilla sense it is a stimuli invoking the fight or flight response of the brain. It is supposed to prevent us from further harm. BUT, in our forum, pain is that which evokes either a response of pleasure or distraction. How pain is administered and received is the main question here. In our lifestyle, pain can be anything from spankings (which may or may not bring us pleasure), beatings (floggings, singletails, faceslapping to mention a few), knife/needle play (for those seeking the more edgy play), to any measure of emotional responses (humilation is a good example). To quote Patrick Swazye in the movie "Roadhouse", "...pain don't hurt..." This is basically true. Pain is the brains response learned from years of experiences trying to avoid that which is harmful to us. Soooo, for those of use who enjoy inflicting pain and those who enjoy receiving pain it is a measure of our wills to twist and turn something we have been taught to aviod into something we seek, for some of us something we crave almost like a drug. Remember, endorphins those wonderful chemicals released while we play with pain are very closely related to........drum roll please......MORPHINE! That's right, as we inflict or receive pain we are producing our own doses of morphine which creates that euphoric high we so lovingly call Dom/sub space. As with any drug the more you use it the more you want it, crave it, NEED IT! So, it might be said that "pain" has, for many of us, become our drug of choice. Do we see pain as something good or bad, that is up to those participating in the scene. As for me, as my name implies, I very much enjoy inflicting pain by whatever means possible as long as those receiving it are willing participants.
