You could also try noise cancelling headphones...

wind those are the ones I use, and they bother me to no end. I sleep on my side and that pushes them way down in on something that is annoyed by them pressing on them, and just the general feel of them in my ears annoy me. maybe if I tried diffrent styles of the soft foam ones.

these here http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/earplugstore_1932_8314102

cut an 1/8th inch off the end if they are to long, you may have wax buildup in your ear that they are hitting make sure your ears have no wax buildup if they are to long cut them to fit.  that is just keep cutting them till they are comfortable length  if you put them in to far gently remove them with a tweezers or what i use is a needle shaped like a fish hook "very carefully"

What kind of earplugs are using?  I use those soft spongey ones that you pinch, put into your ear canal, and they slowly expand and really block noise well. I don't even notice that they're there, maybe you could try those?

Also, I've found that running a loud fan can be great for muffling noise.

There are earplugs that are basically a formable hard wax.  They work a lot better than the disposable foam, and can be reused.

I've used those, too, but since the OP was saying that she was having discomfort, I thought she might be using the harder ones so I suggested the sponge ones.  And I actually do like the sponge ones better, since, like I said, I can't even feel them once they're in and all expanded and settled in the ear canal.

FP, I tried to find a link to the ones I use, but couldn't.  The ones I use are shorter and thicker....maybe try trimming yours down just a little to make them shorter, and maybe don't put them so deeply in?  Like I said, I'm a little mystified because I don't feel mine at all when they're in.

Also, as someone else suggested, the "Breathe Right" strips for your partner might help him.  They work wonders for my brother-in-law, who uses them every night.  They're also available over the counter.

Real, one time the right one got to fsr in talk aboutpanic for a moment, Icouldn't reach it an the more I tried the farther it got shoved in, I absolutely refused to let james try to get it out I was like noooooooooooo it's pushing in more it's pushing in more! I finally used a sharp end of a manicure stick to gently work it out.

I suppose I could try only one in the ear that's going to be facing out. I've done that before. not near as effective but it works.  I don't think that they're to long, it's inside the bother me. I don't like the stuffed full sensation, and sleeping on yourside essentially means on your ear which compresses things.
