softsilkandlace -> Euro Oriental Training (3/6/2005 8:09:54 PM)

This past Friday I attended a demo where the presentor talked to the attendee's on many different topics before his demonstartion. He made the statement that he practices the European Style of BDSM. He never elaborated as to what he meant. I have heard of the term European and Oriental styles of BDSM in the past. But it has strictly been online. Would anyone care to share any knowledge you may have on just what exactly is the European style and the Oriental style. If anyone has a good web site that goes into details I would appreciate that as well. Thanks in advance for you help.

Opppps forgot My words to add to the post above:
The differing ways that a slave serves is what makes
the differance in the oriental or euro or american ways.
Its the type of mindset as well and where a person of
servitude originates from and if their slavery is gained
by birth, by training or by choice. Its whats expected of
those whom serve in a spacific way which is at the core.

Generally speaking, you never will hear anay specifics about these mystical and foreign styles - as the person stating it usually has the intention of impressing you with something that is new, foreign, "special" - and uses these vague references to do just such.

I have heard of many of these organizations and "experiences" in the past (in real life and on line) - only to discover that the person stating them is generally not well traveled, or, has traveled - but has no real experience - and, no real knowledge (a nice way of saying they are lieing).

This is akin to stating that "I was at Woodstock" - it is fascinating, catches people's attention, and leads to a good conversation - but, less than factual.

Next time ask the person specifically what they mean and draw them out... it can be rather fun to nail them to the wall with their own hammer.

Other than that - I always assume once someone makes such a statement - everything I am about to hear is a story... told to impress the less aware and with nothing substantial to back it.

Oh sure. ISO-9969. It's been the European standard for BDSM for many years now (he says with a grin). Rest assured that the europeans have just as much trouble agreeing about anything that would approach a uniform style as folks here in the US. The culture there is somewhat different. In many places in Europe, for example, there is less of a general taboo on "the lifestyle" being open within the family and so you will meet second and third generation D/sers over there. These are just cultural differences that parallel the differences in culture in general.

There are "secret societies" "academies" and "training houses" over there. There are some here in the U.S. too. They are, um, secret. They often engage in things that are at the very least in a very grey area legally. Someone who is involved with one isn't going to be prone to brag of it in front of people he doesn't know, and, whatever they do certainly wouldn't be representative of the "style" of an entire continent.

I agree with LordOfDiscipline. Be very skeptical of anything that you hear from someone who claims to be trained in some mysterious and important sounding "style".

he he, ISO-9969

LOD has one of the best answers on this I can think of. I encourage people however to just to read about how many different styles there are per DREAD above. It really helps to fill out the context of what we're doing. We're not alone or some sort of anomaly, we are literally descending from the experiences of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of human beings and while much of our beliefs and cultural behaviors have always been disdained by various political and religious powers and thus shoved into the dark, we have a history that is as old as history.

I dislike labels, but I do like to call myself an Aesthetic dominant or master. It’s sublimely vague and perfectly specific in all the right ways. And then I get to confuse everyone by saying I train ascetic girls. Sometimes a label is more important for the questions it raises then the definition it provides.

Alex.
