As an incorrigible bachelor with means, I hafta say, I don't see myself living in a house until I need that extra space.

Right now, I live in Toronto and am renting a 850 sqf pad on the 25th floor, overlooking the skyline.  I live 15 minutes, walking, from work.  I pay more rent than most people my age make in a year.

Even if I were going for the Dom thing, the apartment thing would not keep me from it.

Yours,

benji

Out of curiosity what is the tax rate in the UK?

Income tax?
sales tax?
etc...

Oh! Look, you guys think you have it bad over there right? I really dont want to disabuse you of your notions!

Oh well, alright then!

Income tax
low incomes 10% (applicable to minimum wage)
most incomes 20%
higher incomes up to 40%

But there's another 9% national insurance, so really add that to the above.

Sales tax (Value Added Tax or VAT) - 17-5%
Cigarettes; not sure, but its about five pounds for a pack of 20, of which around £3-50 is tax.
Booze of all varieties - similarly heavily taxed (over 50%)
Fuel for your car; criminal. Around £4-00 a gallon at the moment, of which around £3-00 is tax/duty or whatever they want to call it.

Then there's tax to the local council of about £100-00 a month. Theres 5% tax on gas and electricity. 1.5% tax on insurance premia.

No escape if you die either; death duties, inheritance tax etc now affects many more than the wealthy, due to the rise in house values (around x4 over the last ten years).

And for me, running my company I get to pay 45% of the company profit in tax. So if I make 100k this year, and draw what I can, it'll be only 1/3 of the 100k because I'll be paying company tax and then personal tax on top!

E

Pfffffffffffffft.....

Hookers are at least another 30%.

(That's easily 107%).

Sounds like the USA. They spent some time trying to tax us on barter, but they didn’t want to inventory everyone’s homes.

I agree with you there LTR.

hisannabelle -> RE: You Cannot Be Dominant If You Live In An Apartment (2/4/2007 4:38:52 PM)

my dominant rents the main floor of a one-floor home with a basement (his landlady rents the basement out to another couple). i don't think it makes him any less dominant...he's very financially stable, has a good job, takes good care of his finances, and could buy a house if he cared to, but because he doesn't want to stay here, there's no reason for him to buy a house. he's never had a reason to buy one before because he was in the military and moving around so much. oh, and he's 54.

NorthernGent -> RE: You Cannot Be Dominant If You Live In An Apartment (2/4/2007 4:39:47 PM)

Fair enough. There's a single bloke and then there's a bloke with an ex-wife and a family to support. It's a risk and a fact of modern life that unless you're minted, divorce will lead to a tight budget.

I have to agree. I live in an apartment, and I don't think I would be able to move into a house unless I had at least one other person living with me. It would just be so... empty. I only know one single guy who lives in a house of his own and he hates it. Wishes he'd never moved out of his apartment, but he caved in to the pressure of having the "sucess" symbol of a house.

cjenny -> RE: You Cannot Be Dominant If You Live In An Apartment (2/4/2007 5:29:46 PM)

Hold on a sec. Don't all Domly Doms live in caves?

Wulfchyld -> RE: You Cannot Be Dominant If You Live In An Apartment (2/4/2007 5:30:58 PM)

Me too! I would miss my gardens a lot!

SweetDommes -> RE: You Cannot Be Dominant If You Live In An Apartment (2/4/2007 5:50:50 PM)

As others have said, it depends on why you are living in an apartment ... it also depends on what kind of apartment you live in.  If you live in a slum with paperthin walls - that's bad ... if you live in a nice apartment like Holly and I have lived in the past - that's fine.

There are also people whose houses would send up red flags for me.  First, there are just as many rented houses these days as rented apartments (at least around here); second, I've seen many apartments that were better places to live than some of the houses we looked at when we were looking for houses.  Which is worse, a Dominant that owns a home that is falling apart around his/her ears because it's a POS or one who lives in an apartment that is in a well-maintained building with decent sound insulation (and weather insulation for those of us who are currently freezing our asses off)?  Personally, at this point with this wind ... as much as I love the land we are on, and as much as I dislike dealing with other people - I'd take an apartment that is warm over this house [:(]  And yes, we're working on fixing it.

bandit25 -> RE: You Cannot Be Dominant If You Live In An Apartment (2/4/2007 7:30:20 PM)

Gauge, you know this is just ridiculous.  I don't know your finances, but after having been through two rounds of downsizing, I KNOW that things sometimes happen...not because you are financially irresponsible, but because the economy kicks you in the ass.  Or, maybe you don't want to own a home.  Screw her.  She's not worth your concern.

Call me mean spirited or whatever your heart desires but I must vent about something that I found in someone's profile because it really irritated me.

In general it basically stated that if you were 40 and lived in an apartment that you couldn't be a dominant. Now this bothers me on two levels, the first of which is that I live in an apartment and I am 41 years old and a dominant. The second item that chafes my nether regions is that by sheer implication, that statement in that profile is single-minded and basically rude in it's nature.

Before everyone tears into me and tells me to "get over it" allow me to attempt to explain why I even bothered posting about this. Does financial standing have anything to do with being a dominant? If, (at middle age) I do not own a home, does this mean that I am incapable of owning a submissive? Is social status tied into the perception of dominance? I believe the answers to those questions are fairly obvious but I am quite curious to see if this actually is something that a submissive will place any weight in when evaluating a potential dominant.

I do not think that finances have anything to do with being a dominant. I also think that anyone who thinks this would be someone that I would find too shallow to have discourse with.

My Daddy lives in an Apartment at the edge of a large city over looking the pacific ocean. You can see a panoramic view of the sun rising over the harbor (in fact I posted a pic of sunrise there on my profile). But I would still want to be his if his view was overlooking a dump (and he knows this to be true), although I might suggest we camp often[:D].

I have been through too much in this life to be that shallow.

HydroMaster -> RE: You Cannot Be Dominant If You Live In An Apartment (2/4/2007 7:34:44 PM)

I guess my question in this case would have to be, what does living in an apartment have to do with your finacial state?  I live in an apartment.  My rent is more than my sisters mortgage.  Sometimes it's just a matter of personal choice.  I happen to like not having to worry about maintanence, lawn mowing, or the finacial effect of a tree falling through my roof.  For that matter has anyone asked the guy to explain...maybe he just meant the neighbors might complain about the noise.

Actually, that is what I thought about first as well.  I thought perhaps she was simply making jest of the situation.  Thin walls on either side restricting play and all.  (Giving her the benefit of the doubt perhaps?)

A Man's home is his HASSLE or COFFIN . I forget which.I guess it depends on who and where you are.

SCDommie -> RE: You Cannot Be Dominant If You Live In An Apartment (2/4/2007 8:18:34 PM)

I would much rather have an apartment instead of this house.   This house will work you to death in maintenance. Just about time you get ready to go somewhere, a pipe will burst, or something will clog up.
You can scene anywhere.  I would not scene outside here.  It is not a good area for that, but I would love to in a more friendly environement.
