We're sitting here watching the opening ceremonies for the Super Bowl, and one of the Bears players is going on about how if they win they will be the champions of the world. Like what the fuck? How many countries in the world participate in this sport exactly? One? Hrmmmmm. Then there's baseball, the most blatantly obvious example. The World Series? Hello???? Two countries play in the American League. That's hardly the world. I think they need to get a bit of a grip. Anyways, I see they're watching in Baghdad. That's so awesome. Actually, it is playing live in over 100 countries. Satellites rock.

They think they own the world because enough people worship these dummies. They are like anybody else to me, but god like in the towns they play for. They get paid gazoo zoo bucks also to play pro sports.

When did they first use the term World Series for the Baseball? There is a "sport" (loose deffinition) in the UK called conkers, each year the World Championship is held in a small village in the Midlands. Teams from a variety of countries enter and recently the Germans won. The term World Championship is used as an open joke because it is clearly not a mainstream world activity................ overstating something in the UK often sends the signal that you are laughing at yourself, .................... perhaps not the same reason in the US?

Actually 'The World Series' is so named because it was originally sponsered by 'The World' newspaper, and not coz the americans believe they are the centre of the world..... although saying that...... lol

Well in terms of American football....the US is basically the only country that has popularized it to such a high degree for so many years. So by "Champions of the World" I'm sure they just mean that their isn't a team that has yet to show such a high degree of skill as thier own. A bunch of serious bunk, but winning a Super Bowl also secures the rookies jobs, which I suppose makes them happy. Baseball should deffinetly change it's "World Series" name to something more like "US Series" since the world plays Baseball. Anyone else think they get paid way too much? I mean they get paid more then the President for cryin out loud! (Not that the president needs it all either....give it back to the little guys! The Blue collar joes!)

well american culture is the predominent culture- a mixure of many mostly western cultures as it is a young country. I slept yesderday and did not watch the game. I think- whom is great - ought to be measured be science and nobel peace prizes. only recently had scientists here in the US got a standing ovation. The courts decidied that at least in private enterprise- they all can claim to be number 1. I type this only miles away from Williamsport PA, home of little league world series! Williamsport had gotten some heat lately as to why that venue should be the venue, referencing other US cities NOT outside US. Partricapants come from 6 countries that I know of for that. The cockiness can be ugly- but on the other hand- I cant recall too many fans that were trampled to death over foot ball....[not like in soccor, EU] glunk Those football players are so doped up it isnt even funny. very animalistic. So in reply to the OP, i dont rank sports high up there as i would science. science and tech has done more for humunity then a bunch of tight ends. hmmmm. ;-0~

Most English fans think they have the god-given right to win every sport we play. What's worse, if you exclude the power-houses of darts and snooker, we never win anything. One football world cup in 80 years, one rugby world cup in 30 years and we're yet to win a cricket world cup (which has been going on approx. 35 years). Talk about delusions of grandeur. If we had our own football world cup we wouldn't even win that - the game would be called off due to bad weather or alcohol-fuelled crowd violence or something. Yet, rule britannia etc.

I seen a documentary how when during the game there is an injury- the athelete gets injected with massive pain meds just to get thru the game. I would have routed for "da Bears"- the 85 or 86 game was great. now that i think about it- the winning city gets near riots overturned cars, and near riotess conditions. it is rather arragent to broadcast the superbowl to all those countries. some of those countries have what 4 channels? here we have over 200. literally. I could use alot of words to describe the US, not all of them flatterring. Gluttonous, selfcenterred, materialistic, shallow- to start with. but there are still down home folk that would give you the shirt off his back to a person in need. [your smaller towns like Willimsport] 300 million ppl here that march to the corporate beat. some of the 300 mill have tunes that out- and are stilll HUMAN. The powers that be want to kill the internet as we know it. when us peons compare notes- the jig is up. it is a threat to corporate rule. So keep on keeping on. God i need coffee. LOL. i cant type or spell, and --no im not drunk- anyhow signed from a very cold town in Pennsylvania

Yet, rule britannia etc. More in hope than expectation but at least on the one soccer world cup, it was in a truely world sport where being world champions is really being world champions. Rugby has more top nations than American football (just) as does cricket. Soccer is the only one that can call itself a world sport. However, I'm with PA, sport is pretty insignificant when it comes to scientific and cultural achievement.

However that has changed- at least if it is against a US team. A stir was made when they descibed the phillies as looking like a bunch of truckers. lol- well it was TRUE. thay DID look like truckers! a big deal was made over that. I personally wrote my reps to tone down/stop Canada bashing when we were bickering over trade deals- lumber as I recall after Katrina when we really needed it! Anyhow maybe science and teck will save us in the end. Unlikely will it be boastfull in your face bragartness, condescion, and bullying. Try to look at it is playfullness. An escape from every day life. But - yeah, plenty of us are on the same page. despite what the message of the day is from Washington, new york, or where ever-- kindest regards-

The majority of professional athletes are doped up, regardless of sport. I consider the use of performance-enhancing drugs something that is done widely. The big game is big for me because it is a party and I enjoy following the NFL, in general. Last night was sort of boirng, we all talked about how much more fun it is when your favorite team makes it to the championship.

Incidently- with my back problems- one of my drs was big on steriodal injections. Normal use is 3 a year or lifetime- I forget which. He did @ 64 of them on me. each time he billed $964.00. it fccked with my body and my mind. i developed a rage. [roid rage] [an incident of rage sent me to the slammer] For me- I refuse steroids anymore as I personally feel they are dangerous. Tho- I am for choice on what one does to their own body. As far as the ole doc- he is still in biz still injecting people up--- I never formally complained- and dont intend to. live and learn. :-)

MGD in the world there are many that simply follow the crowd. if the crowd is doing it- it must be worthwhile. cm people -many of them IMO- are not followers by and large. We/they make our own conclussions. If there is too much hype over a movie- or the big crowd is doing abc- we tend to go the other direction. I have seen some extremely interesting posts on this board. So- it is fair to say this crowd thinks outside the box. I find that refreshing.
