To my knowledge there is only one day in the year that anyone really looks forward to TV commercials and that is Superbowl Sunday.

I found a few to be really funny like the Blockbuster one with the rabbit and the guinea pig using the live mouse as a computer mouse. The Budweiser ones were pretty good overall and I really enjoyed the careerbuilder.com ones, but there were some real losers too...

Snickers: What the hell were they thinking? It's not an anti-gay statement it is a statement in general to the quality of their ad. They have really hit rock bottom.

GoDaddy.com : The spokesmodel looks like she had been hit in the face with a shovel... think Tammy Baker with a fabulous body.

The heart being beat up by "health" thugs: Sorry, but this ad really turned me off no matter what the message.

The bank employees robbing their customers: This ad was in poor taste overall. I agree with the sentiment about the banking industry but it could have been done better.

Finally:

The clunker of all clunkers was the Chrysler, or GM robot who got laid off and committed suicide. This ad was, no doubt the worst Superbowl ad ever. Nothing is funny about losing one's job, nor is suicide hilarious.

So... what were your best and worst of the ads?

Any thoughts on the dismal halftime show? Prince was not just bad, he was pathetic. The guy can play guitar but for the most part his "Purple Reign" is so over.

Oh, we were clapping when he sang Purple Rain.  I told everyone he'd sing it "he has to, you know he will", the purple guitar was a bonus.  But what was up with the doo-rag or whatever was on his head?  And I am sort of ashamed to admit that I found the KFed ad amusing.  Oh, and I thought Jessica Simpon's lips were too red.

For the most part I agree with all of your comments but this one. While the comercial started out as a downer, in the end it was only a nightmare and actually brought a chuckle in the end. Admittedly I did not belly laugh like I did when the two guys played "Rock, Paper, Sissors" for the last beer, or the Blockbuster mouse ad.

As for the half time show; WTF? I can't believe that fuck nut is still attracting the spotlight? I would rather have a hot lead enema then watch or listen to that hack!

I though the half time show sucked i would rather have prince sing the national anthem and see Billy Joel do the halftime show.

As fo the ads i think the funniest ones were the Budwiser ones espically the bud light one where the guy picks up a hitchiker with and ax and a chainsaw just cause they had bud light.  The iother one when all the crabs were bowing to the bud cooler.

i laughed my ass off at the kfed (or is he fed-ex?) ad!!! i can't believe he actually did it. the robert goulet one was pretty good, too.
you don't have to like prince, but he looks and sounds the same as he did in 1984. can't say the same for billy joel. i was disappointed in his rendition.

His "rendition" of the National Anthem did not butcher the song. He performed it like it was written and for that I was very appreciative. I am sick of these "artistic interpretations" that sensationalize and overstate what should be a dignified and proud anthem.

I just need to ask why the hell Coca-Cola still finds it necessary to advertise during the Superbowl?  Coke could stop advertising for a fucking year, and, at this point, everybody would still drink the shit.

gee, now i'm sorry i don't have a television...to see & hear the National Anthem sung as it was originally intended?  don't get me started on all of those Whitney Houston-types who have to show off their octave range during such a, as you so well put it, "dignified & proud anthem".....

edited because i'm apparently not quite awake & forgot that one hears music...

Thank you!

Every time someone sings The Star Spangled Banner and decides they have to "make it their own,"  I can't help but cringe.  Billy Joel was a very refreshing change.

Damn, all the talk of Billy's Star Spangled Banner, guess I should have viewed that part too!
I just DVR'ed the bowl, while astarte and I went shopping for wallpaper, and then fast forwarded through all of it to watch the ads!
Oh well.

I went to a Pro baseball game (this was before the '94 strike... I haven't been back since) and these four guys walked onto the field and they look like they had just come from sleeping under a bus at the local terminal. They were straggly and unkempt and they were to sing the National Anthem. I let out a groan because I knew that it was going to be butchered beyond recognition. They sang it like a barbershop quartet and it was absolutely wonderful. I am fine with something like that, but when a singer does things to the Anthem that aren't there, it diminishes the overall meaning as to why we actually sing the Anthem in the first place.

I am a musician and I am all for artistic interpretation (you should hear my band do a heavy speed metal version of Prince's song Kiss) but some things should be left alone especially when it comes to one's own National Anthem.
