I got lucky, it's only 1 hour from Boston to Rhode Island [:D] and I can take the train too! (that's where my perfect Master lives)

If I was looking, I don't know, I'd say it would have to be within a reasonable airfare (New York, Washington D.C.) or driving distance.

I will say, when I was looking, generally I would send a nice thanks but no thanks email back if they were too far away, unless it was just for friendship.... I might have missed out, but, I would beg to differ now

Damn Loki beat me to it. I think for the right person, or ideal as you've put it, distance shouldn't be an issue.

Distance sure wasn't an issue for me... I flew across country for my first scene with the perfect Top ...
and the only two regrets I have is that I did not went sooner and that I could not stay longer.........

I once did travel 13 hours to michigan from england just to see a girl - didnt work out but it had to be done

I flew 1835.90 miles to go to a kink event with my girl as our first "date", so to speak. We drove an additional 269.46 miles to attend the event.

Granted, we'd met in person before and had gotten to know each other in person while attending an event seperately. We also talked for a good four months before between the time we met and the time we ventured off on our own. But, this was our first "date" together.

I went 3,026 miles to meet my Lord.  He took me to Appleby's and then a fire wand demonstration with the entire house.  We have been flying back and forth ever since just waiting on immigration to approve my residency.

honestly, i choose not to find intimate relations through the internet...  it has to come from a face to face meeting, at a munch or a social where i can get immediate references

I can say 2 hours or 100 miles or a day's travel or whatever, but there will always be some person out there that will make me break my rules, so... yeah.

Vegas to Nashville for a purely platonic date that didnt stay that way past saying hello.
Technically, we were supposed to be going to a wedding the weekend we met.  The wedding didnt work out, Angel did, so he was worth the trip.

I have learned from the past that long distance relationships do not work for me and I cannot relocate due to my family which is here...I would travel as far as upstate New York[;)]
