I am bi-polar, have borderline personlity disorder, bulimia, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome...and maybe a couple of other things, not sure.

I don't take any meds but birth control.  I have been able to totally go off of all meds, I didn't like the way they made me feel at all, and didn't want to depend on a pill to be happy.  I still have my bad days, but most of the time I can keep things in check with meditation and things along that line.  I know it won't work for everyone, but I also know its nice not to look at life thru a fog of pills all the time.

I take medication, but has been after years of going through hell. I am bipolar, and for years each medication i took wouldn't last. The Doctor's cure would be up the medication tell i ended up in the hospital. It finally took me to a point in my life where i had to just stop them all. During this time i had created a ulser that was caught early enough that i can heal it through good health. So i started walking, in fact it is my form of helping with all the emotional crap i need to deal with also. Eating right was high on there, learning what herbs can help me with, and  living a nonstressed life. I lost 30lbs, and started really feeling better. I also had my bad days, and learned some coping devices.

The bad part....life is stressful, and there is no way of getting past that without become a hermit. A hermits life just isn't an option with me. So i went to a doctor, and explained everything. I pretty much told her that my body doesn't take medication as others do, and that i don't want to be a zomby. So instead of prescribing her cooky cutter meds, she told me about the medication first, let me study it, and let me pase how much i need. I take a very low dosage, and is actually lower then was it normally percribed to start with. We have both realized that if i have anymore i would actually become manic, which is actaully not one of my bipolar symptoms. (I am bipolar 2 which means I don't have manic just mania.)

So yes, I think there just some situations that you can't help but need the meds, but this is only if it isn't used as a bandaid.

I take:-

Becotide - Twice a day for asthma prevention.
Ventolin - for asthma as needed.
Admittedly i do not help myself in any way with the asthma as i smoke.
Motifene - I took this for abdominal pain caused by ovarian cysts and now take it occasionally for after effects from my operation.
The cysts i could not prevent they are an after effect of having children.
Prozac - I have my moments of depression and they just take the edge off when i need them most.  The doctor prescribes and i self medicate when i need it.

I didn't say those addicted to perscription drugs outweigh those addicted to narcotics.  I never mentioned narcotics at all.  That is a whole different ball of wax.

There are extremely few drugs one can become "addicted" to.When people talk about becoming "addicted" to prescription drugs it us usually a narcotic, or type of amphetemine such as Risperdol for ADHD.   There are a few drugs one can become "dependent" upon.  For instance, if you have diabetes, you may be "dependent" upon insulin.  Without it, you would die.

Addiction and dependency are too often confused.  Hence, the stigma from doctors AND patients.

You are trying to put words in my mouth.  I specifically said ADDICTION.  YES there are people that are ADDICTED to perscription medications regardless of how few there are to be ADDICTED to.  I know people that use medications because they NEED them and I also know people that use medications that don't need them but they can't stop because they are ADDICTED to them yet the perscriptions continue to be filled and re-upped.

I live mostly on low fat yoghurt. Three to four litres per day. And vitamin c tablets. I recommend this diet to anyone with chronic diseases that have no known cause. At least try it for ten days.

Today I ate one white chocolade bar (not so good for me), one box of six large cookies (not the good kind either), I drank some diluted herb liquor (the herbs may benefit me, the alcohol harms me, hence the dilution), I had a large meal at 13 o'clock of egg, tofu (soy), sauze and noodles, and - let me finish it - one litre of yoghurt and one tablet of vitamin c. So today I indulged.

Also, I have found that many doctors don't like to be questioned and for some reason people are afraid to upset the godly person. My opinion is such that the doctor owes me all the answers I ask for, I am not only his/her patient but also their customer. It is my right to question anything and everything until I am satisfied. It is also my responsibility to myself.

I am in wholehearted agreement. Like lawyers, doctors need to remember that WE pay THEM, not that they are gracing us with their time and knowlege. I wish more people would question their doctors, and switch doctors when they find that they don't agree with a particular doctor's methods. It seems to be harder and harder these days to find a doctor that actually wants to work with patients to cure the root of problems, rather than just treating the symptoms.

LaT,

I tend to agree with you, most medical problems can be attributed to lifestyle issues. I have had to change my lifestyle in order to prevent lung cancer, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis (I have a genetic predisposition that I am hopeful I can counteract with diet and exercise).

Now this is not the case for many people... my sister has Krissi's problem. She also has lupis. But I can say that by taking responsiblity for weight control, nutrition, dropping bad habits, and exercise we can at least feel better in whatever body we came with. Not everyone can exercise, but we can all stop smoking and eat whole foods... and if we eat right the weight will often come off naturally (not always so either, but often).  Some medical conditions we cannot change, but we can compensate by taking care of ourselves in all the ways that we know how.

My Daddy has high cholestrol btw, and he has been eating healthy for years. He even went almost vegan to try to keep off the meds, but he just inherited it. Cholestrol meds do not have terrible side effects that other drugs do though

Scripts I'm on: Lamictal and seroquel, which are mood stablizers and omeprosol (sp?) for acid reflux. Non-scripts I'm on: a multi with a full compliment of vitamin K (hard to find), Omega 3, biotin, ginko biloba, calcium and iron.

I'm healthier at 36 than when I was 26. Or even 22.

I have found alot of herbal remedies for problems that most would run to a doctor for...I use cinnamon and dandelion root to control my blood sugar even though I still need my medication, I don't need anymore than one pill per/ day rather than 3 times a day like my doctor originally wanted me to do...I use kelp to help with my hypothyroidism even though I STILL need my medication, I use less of it...I use blue/ green algae which is good for obesity to help control my weight...With hypothyroidsm I tend to have trouble with my bowels, not being able to use the bathroom as much as one should causing blockages, etc...the blue green algae helps move things through my system..I take aloe vera as well as drink aloe vera to help with my bowels and also helps with blood sugar...I take NONI which is good for the immune system...I take flax seeds which are good for my thyroid ..Cranberry is very good for my urinary tract...I spend alot of money at GNC but it sure beats having the doctor give me more pills to take

*looks at her nightstand*
Celebrex- arthritis
Neurontin- nerve pain
Morphine Sulfate- pain
Soma- pain
Restoril or Desyrl or Ambien or Dalmane or Nortriptyline, those are for chronic insomnia. I mix & match as needed.
Zoloft- depression.

I have SLE, aka systemic Lupus

TMJ, tempromandibular joint disorder. 10% remaining cartilage in left jaw joint and yay still 30% in right jaw joint.

Reynauds Syndrome, can't handle the cold.

Sojgrens or something like that, severe dry eyes.

Restless leg syndrome, sounds fun but it sucks.

Fibromyalgia, at a so-called debilitating level.

Depression & diagnosed Insomnia.

If it weren't for the medication I would be completely disabled, not just mostly disabled. It isn't anything I caused..it is just my body & most of my family members as well. At least I got to skip the Multiple Sclerosis my oldest sister has!
I think that is all lol.

I have no health insurance & I cannot work. No alimony. Turned down for Medicaid, Medicare, SSI Disability...I spend just over $1000.00 a month & at this point I refuse any new tests. Let it fall off lol.

I did my best to keep emotion out of this..gods this is a hard subject for me. I betchya I remember something else the second I hit 'post' too heh.

I agree that yogurt (yoghurt) is very good for you, but, for women, we need to be careful not to eat too much... a little yogurt every day is good to keep away colds/shorten the length of colds and I'm sure other benefits and for women, it helps prevent yeast infections.  However, too much, can cause bacterial infections... I think most women know this, but, just in case there are some that don't, thought I'd share.  Thanks!  Sorry to hijack the thread...

Oh, medications, yah, right...  I beleive in a mixed approach, I know I have two things I inherited from my poor family genes (diabetes and high blood pressure) and I take prescriptions pills only (no shots) and at very low dosages for it, but, I also mix that with diet, exercise and vitamins (Omega fatty acids, cinnamon pills, vitamins and garlic pills)... and I have one medium-sized low sugar/low fat yogurt a day too    So far, I'm doing alright keeping everything in check and under control.

That's good... also, something I never tought of but heard from a friend of mine, frozen yogurt counts as yogurt... I guess, she was eating like 2 yogurts and then having a frozen yogurt at night, she ended up having problems, and figured out she was eating too much yogurt with the frozen yogurt too.

I didn't know dandellion was good for blood sugars too? I will have to check it out.... thanks!

Oh Cjenny - come over to the UK and we'll get you sorted for free OK? (Well about USD 10-00 per script item anyway, but then you likely wouldnt be working so it'd be free).

Interested to see you put down Reynauds; I got that too, but luckily it doesnt often get too cold here, and I gave up working outdoors 20 years ago now. No one, and I mean no one, seems to have even heard of it, unless they have it, and even some who have it have no idea about it. Mind you, its fun for scaring people, when my fingers have turned white! Its not a big deal for me though, apart from it will be tomorrow when we are expecting our first snow of the winter (first in 3 years actually) and I wont be able to play outside with the kids.

It was lucky for one of our drivers that I have Reynauds too. He almost got sacked a few years back for refusing to do the Kazakhstan run in the winter, on account of Reynauds and the danger of frostbite. No one had heard of it and thought he was making it up to get out of what was a really difficult and dangerous job anytime of year.

Lurking about the forums I'd thought all I had in common with the people here was this lifestyle!
I have RA (rheumatory arthritis) and Osteoarthritis, I am Bi-Polar(type 1), have PTSD and OCD, Fibromyalgia, TMJ and have frequent Migraines.  To combat these daily joys I take Avandia, Methotrexate, Mobic, Effexor ER, Topamax, Toporal XL and Omeprazole.   I have Darvocet, Ultram, Ativan, Lidocain Patches and Frova to assist with pain management - but unless my eyes are coming out I refrain from using them.  I take a wealth of supplements to counteract the side effects of the medications(gotta love having your hair start to fall out)  and to attempt to boost my immunity since RA is an immune system disorder.
Due to the range of my health issues - and the fact that I am on the three month check up schedule for mammograms - I am very proactive with my doctors.  They are my team.  If they don't all know what is going on they won't be able to work together to help me.  I am doing my best, with healthy choices (and my therapist sees Sir as a healthy choice) and modifications I am hoping I can maintain my current health status at least long enough to finish paying for my home and have my twenty years in at work.
I don't have the option of wine and chocolate for my illnesses.  Would be nice if the world were that easy.
The only thing I have actually found that remotely helps any of my pain related illnesses is sex or scene play.  But that is another thread that I saw a few days ago and was too shy to post on.
