There are many BD/SM scene events around the country and some in parts of the world other than N. America too. These vary from simple camp outs to major hotel/resort spaces, from cruises to weekend parties, from inexpensive to very expensive.
All of the regional or national events I know of have an admission fee required. This is needed to rent the spaces and cover insurance, security and so forth.
Most have brought in well known speakers to give classes, skilled people to do demonstrations, staff to monitor play at the event and good venders to display and sell toys, kinky garb, etc. This involves costs. Usually room and board are additional costs. Often we've seeen that sometimes we get what we pay for, and low budget events are not necessarily the best.
Many events give "scholarships", price breaks to those who agree to work a certain number of hours at the event.
I might attend a CM event with my friends and my partner if the date was right, the location worked for me and the price was acceptable. I attend a number of midwest US events each year and from time to time something further away.
Often simple social group or discussion group meetings of a few hours with no play may have no attendance fee required, but usually donations are still necessary for the group to operate very long.
