JerseyKrissi72 -> I Never Knew: Nutrasweet Is That Dangerous? (2/8/2007 8:18:10 PM)

[&:]Aspartate and glutamate act as neurotransmitters in the brain by facilitating the transmittion of information from neuron to neuron. Too much aspartate or glutamate in the brain kills certain neurons by allowing the influx of too much calcium into the cells. This influx triggers excessive amounts of free radicals which kill the cells. The neural cell damage that can be caused by excessive aspartate and glutamate is why they are referred to as "excitotoxins." They "excite" or stimulate the neural cells to death.
Aspartic acid is an amino acid. Taken in its free form (unbound to proteins) it significantly raises the blood plasma level of aspartate and glutamate. The excess aspartate and glutamate in the blood plasma shortly after ingesting aspartame or products with free glutamic acid (glutamate precursor) leads to a high level of those neurotransmitters in certain areas of the brain.

yup. A spill of it on the roadway is considered a haz-mat incident.

I know you have diabetes but are controlling it with diet, light medications, like myself... I have heard conflicting evidence on Nutrasweet... some say it is others not...

However, for me, now, it's a matter of what's MORE dangerous... sugar or nutrasweet? I do use it in moderation and I also use this product called "Stevia" which comes from a plant, found in Organic Groceries, etc... but it is more expensive... so, I switch between using the two.

I also stopped drinking diet sodas... only water now, maybe with some "True Lime" or "True Lemon" you find in the sugar aisle. That cuts way back on my intake of nutrasweet/splenda (I guess that's supposed to be dangerous too), but, if you are avoiding sugars and glucose, it's so hard to avoid their replacements all together.  Unless anyone has any other suggestions?

just my thoughts on the subject [8|]

DiurnalVampire -> RE: I Never Knew: Nutrasweet Is That Dangerous? (2/8/2007 8:33:50 PM)

I'll stick to splenda, thanks.

Any f the sweetener chemicals at one time or another have been quoted as bieng problematic.  I seem to reember that Sweet n Low was supposedly cancer causing.  There will always be something.

HydroMaster -> RE: I Never Knew: Nutrasweet Is That Dangerous? (2/8/2007 8:40:06 PM)

More fun facts the keep me away from sweeteners.  Sacharine(think I spelled it right) turns into formaldahyde(enbalming fluid) at moderate to high temperatures....anything above say 100 F.  So if it's in your system and your temperture goes up a couple degees for any reason, guess what's floating around in you.  That's also why your not supposed to bake with it. Isn't science fun?

alovelylady4U -> RE: I Never Knew: Nutrasweet Is That Dangerous? (2/8/2007 9:11:15 PM)

i, too, have heard this many times. And i do wonder.

There are alternative sweetners at most health food stores that are said to be safe?  i have recently purchased one . ($3.50/lb.) Diet Soda? Oh yes i love then 1 and all- yet it is true- like so many avoid them due to nutrasweet. If this health food store sugar is safe it can open up all kinds of drinks to many of U/us. Between diets, and diabetes and the fact sugar is also called "white death" by many in Hawaii?

i recently chatted with 2 gentlemen at a store while waiting in line. i am such a chatternbox it is true, but oh how i learn so much! And the leads and info shared is priceless!! One  older gentleman had just lost his wife to diabetes, the second man about my age looked so sad and said he knew exactly how the first man felt and that he took his wife to Mexico where the gland of a piglette was implanted in her arm. After 3 weeks her sugar has stabalized,  the nerve damage in her feet seems to be reversing and so on. i got a copy of the doctor in Mexico as well as asked his phone number and if i may call to ask how it is working.

HydroMaster -> RE: I Never Knew: Nutrasweet Is That Dangerous? (2/8/2007 9:15:43 PM)

A pig gland?  Which gland?  That's interestng because sugar problems run in my family.  I haven't had any myself but that would be something to consider.

it's amazing what type of dangerous shit they will sell to the public, shit that can eat you from the inside out but they won't let us smoke a lil weed...geesh.[&:]

windchymes -> RE: I Never Knew: Nutrasweet Is That Dangerous? (2/9/2007 4:43:17 AM)

As always, moderation.  I doubt anyone will keel over from having a pack or two of Equal a day.  It's pretty sweet, and half a pack goes a long way.  But in large amounts, just about everything is dangerous, including vitamins.   I do know people who are sensitive to Equal and get migraines when they consume it.

JerseyKrissi72 -> RE: I Never Knew: Nutrasweet Is That Dangerous? (2/9/2007 4:45:40 AM)

just like guzzling cum in large quantities can make you sick but a lil bit don't hurt

[8D]sorry, couldn't resist.

Exactly!  lol [:D]

That would be cum, then?

Splenda (sucralose) caused me years worth of  digestive problems that 3 doctors couldn't figure out. On the one hand, I'm glad I now know what caused all my problems.  On the other hand - shucks!  Since I used Splenda as my sweetener.  From what I understand, Slenda is made by taking a sugar molecule and chlorinating it, creating a new molecule never before known to man.  Whole Foods won't sell Splenda or products containing Splenda because they don't feel enough is known about it to consider it healthy.

As for Nutrisweet aka aspartame...all I can say is horrendous migraines.  Direct correlation.  Think of this this way, if it's a synthesized chemical, your body might react to it.

http://www.holisticmed.com/splenda/ This site addresses toxicity issues in both.

BOUNTYHUNTER -> RE: I Never Knew: Nutrasweet Is That Dangerous? (2/9/2007 7:05:55 AM)

I tend to stay away from most artifical sweeners.I much perfer a little honey in my coffee and tea..THAT way I can still drink a few diet pepsis and mountain dews a day...BH

Lorelei115 -> RE: I Never Knew: Nutrasweet Is That Dangerous? (2/9/2007 7:09:54 AM)

I use stevia. All natural sweetener made from an herb. They've been using it in China for over 30 years. About 300x sweeter than sugar, but you honestly cannot tell the difference in flavor when its used properly. It is currently banned from being sold in the US as a sweetener due to vigorous lobbying by the sugar cartel, but you can pick it up at a health food store as an herbal supplement. Its somewhat expensive, per pound wise, but you use so little of it that it ends up being a better buy than sugar.

Edited 'cause I have a tendency to exaggerate and darn it, its early in the morning.

JerseyKrissi72 -> RE: I Never Knew: Nutrasweet Is That Dangerous? (2/9/2007 7:10:04 AM)

Since I already know that the pink stuff and blue packs are no good for me I use my splenda (* the yellow packs*)---even though alot isn't known about it yet, i'll take my chances. I think maybe i use 3 packages a day which isn't all that much. I drink mostly water and non sugar green tea.

redpetals -> RE: I Never Knew: Nutrasweet Is That Dangerous? (2/9/2007 7:18:19 AM)

Stevia..thanks mostly to the Lipton tea people..can now be found at Wal Mart.
