LadyEllen -> Deaths of pets cost UK 8.3 million pounds a year (2/9/2007 12:20:37 AM)

This has just been on the news; apparently, the deaths of our pets in the UK cost the economy 8.3 million pounds a year, because so many people miss work, in mourning for their loss, or else find even if they do go to work that they cannot perform well for the distraction.

Is it justifiable to miss work because your cat died?
Is it justifiable to not give your best, because your dog is now an ex canine?
What about parrotts? Norwegian Blues, for example?
And, who in heck works this stuff out and why?

I know damned well, that pets become members of the family and when they die its really upsetting. My fave cat (Mindy) died on 14th July 1993; that I remember the date says it all I'd say. I went to work that day, but then it was holiday time and I was needed; I dont feel in the slightest bit bad for maybe not concentrating enough that day.

But what I cant get over, is that some dick in some government finance body spent taxpayers' money on researching this stuff! I wonder whats next? A research project into whether car ownership results in people buying tyres? (or tires, if you prefer). Maybe if they concentrated on running the country better, instead of working on this sort of thing..... but then that might be a challenge.

I am sorry about your loss (cat) and I have lost many loved animals but life has to go on...I can't imagine taking a day off from work for the death of an animal...I would be distracted of course, but would continue on..

We mourn. We're entitled to mourn. We all do it in different ways. I didn't take a day off when my cats died (I've had four die in the last five years) because I didn't want to be home and be reminded they were gone all day.

I too am sorry for you loss, I know how painful it can be.

If either of my two cats were to become sick or pass away I would definitely take time off to be there for them as they have (in there own way) been there for me.

Having fostered and found homes for probably close to 100 cats and a couple of dogs over the last 10 years, I have found my self attached to even those which were only temporarily a part of my life.  On more than one occasion I have left work to be with a cat or kitten I was fostering in their final moments.

I have to admit that I did take a day off work when I lost one dog. I have had many furry babies but that one was very special and I was devastated at her sudden death.
