well, iffen yer shure....

when i was 9, i got the first cat of my life...her name was Mitzi, but i tacked on a bunch of other names too, sort of like Spanish Royalty...i always thought of Mitzi as my real mother, since she would run to me when i cried & she would comfort me when i was sick or had cramps...she was also a most sensitive being who would go sit in a corner if she was scolded & when she turned around, there would be tears on her face...

for years, she co-existed with our fish, simply dangling her paw into the aquarium now & then for entertainment...one day, my mother yelled at her & left the house...her last errand was to pick me up from school...when we got home, she headed down the hallway to her bedroom & yelped...i came running, only to find all of our fish, dead & lying in the hallway at regular intervals from one end to the other & Mitzi at the other end just looking at my mother with an expression that said, "i TOLD you not to yell at me!!"

Priceless......

I think my best cat was Spice...I got him when I was 11..just after my back started giving me troubles and my mom had her first stroke.  Was such a terrifing and lonely time for me.  I remember for 5 or 6 years I cried myself to sleep every night...noone was allowed in my bedroom but Spice...and he would lay on my pillow and lick all the tears away.

*as I am sitting here trying to type with the maine coon on my lap drooling on my arm and head butting my hand* ... both cats love to do that kneading when they are happy, I call it "making bread" [;)]

ok, have to go pet him before he digs his nails further into my lap making bread [:D]

This sound just like my boy BT, the happier his is the more he kneads, I call it making biscuits, and the more he kneads the more he drools.  It actually drips out of his mouth...Yuck!

My girl Lily, loves to watch the birds in the courtyard outside my bedroom windows.  The other day I way laying in bed watching tv and the curtains were closed but she could still she the shadows of the birds outside.  She proceed to jump straight up in the air to "attack" the bird, she was probably close to four feet of the ground when she got her claws stuck in the curtain.  She is just hanging there, trying to look at me like "hey what just happened".  I love her but she isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer if you know what I mean.

Mr. Cat weighed 18 lbs & knew how heavy he was, so he rarely got on me, just would lie right next to me...he didn't drool & he didn't do the "kneading" behavior often...when he did, i said he was meditating, because he would begin to knead & his eyes would glaze over & he would go somewhere else...it was fascinating to watch.....

Oh, my goodness... Lily sounds like our other cat... she would just sit and watch birds all day long in my old apartment (can't see them so much here) and she even started to chirp like them... I always say her name is so appropriate... Kiwi...  she is also not the sharpest cat I ever met, but God, I love her... never seen a cat roll over and fall off a bed, hanging to the bedspread like "I meant to do that" Sometimes, if there are birds (or even hellicopters) on tv, she tries to catch it.

One time, I think she sprained her "ankle" (do they have ankles) once. I assume she must've followed the other cat someplace and she couldn't get down from so high up -- the main coon can practically fly, she's kinda heavy, but, it happened over night, so, I am just guessing.

gawd!!  cats are just the coolest people, dontcha think??  i am currently owned by a formerly feral dog who was rescued from New Orleans after the hurricane...it has been an interesting journey, but Spike, the Amazing Wonder Dog, as much as i adore him, still ain't no cat!!!

I have a kitty girl named Lily, too.  Even spelled the same way.  She's half-Siamese, very intelligent, and loves to fetch.  She waits for me to sit down at the computer, then brings her stick over, hoping that I will notice and throw it.  If I am absorbed in work, she brushes against my leg insistently until I pick up the stick and throw it.

My other kitty girl is named Misty.  She is a small, cute, solid black cat with big gold eyes.  She gets concerned when I try to sleep in on weekends.  She knows the normal time I get up during the week and thinks something is wrong when I sleep longer than that.  She will come over and tap me on the cheek with her little paw until I wake up.  She's so cute it's impossible to get angry with her.

linea... aawww.... that's a good thing you are doing for that dog, I would love to have a dog, but, I live in the heart of Boston, and one, can't have them here and two, it would have to be a small dog because I don't have a yard for them...

well, that, and Kiwi would KILL me if I got a dog... she hates dogs... Baboo (the maine coon) on the other hand, would be thrilled! He loves animals, had a great dane once come up and sniff him and he just looked and sniffed back... no big deal to him.

I took care of a friends 2 cats before for 3 months (one is Kiwi's sister) and Baboo was overjoyed... he had "friends" -- none of the other cats displayed his enthusiasm quite as much at first though, lol.  In the end, before they went home, the 4 of them learned how to get into soooooooo much trouble together. I think two will be my limit [;)]

lilsubl -> RE: Cat Tails (2/10/2007 3:09:17 PM)

thank you for the kind words about Spike, but i feel it's just the opposite...what a wonderful thing he is doing for me!!

Mr. Cat loved kittens, even just born eyes still closed kittens & would do his best to care for them while the mother went gallivanting...when he was getting old, he started to sleep a lot, so i went & got him a kitten...this was a Norwegian Forest Cat who had been born to a barn cat momma who must have told him great stories of the big outdoors, cause he couldn't stand being inside for long...he was a long-haired black & white cat with a white tip on his tail, so his name was Vincent Van Cat, Yo, Vinnie! for short...Mr. Cat adored him & played with him until Vinnie was a teenager & started to play too rough with the old arthritic boy...one day, the 3 of us were outside when Vinnie was too small to be out there on his own...i looked up from my book & Mr. Cat was there, but Vinnie had disappeared...i looked for him & couldn't find him, so i said to Mr. Cat, "where's Vinnie?  go find Vinnie"...Mr. Cat was very comfortably ensconced in the sun, but looked rather resignedly at me, sighed & got up & walked around the corner of the house...a minute later, he walked back to me with Vinnie in tow, laid back down & said, "there he is, ok???"

When Mr. Cat was dying, he was lying on the living room floor & Vinnie came over & laid down facing him...he touched his paw to Mr. Cat's & they looked at each other for a very long time...i took a picture of this farewell....

sensualmagirl -> RE: Cat Tails (2/10/2007 4:00:47 PM)

aaaaaaaawwwwwwww.... so sweet....

Kiwi is our replacement companion for Baboo... we had his sister, she died before she turned 1 from a kidney disease I didn't know about. The night before she died, she hopped in the shower with me as if to say goodbye... she loved water!  I put her in her bed with her baby blanket and Baboo just sat by her (I was going to bring her to the hospital again in the morning, she had been there during the day), the next morning, he jumped on the bed around 5am and howled and stood ontop of us trying to wake us up (this is not typical behavior), it was because Misha (his sister) had passed... was so sad. We got Kiwi that day for his new sister and they are inseperable... if one can't find the other, they howl looking... I also never ignore Baboo now when he cries at odd times, I wonder always if he's trying to tell me something important, actually, I worry when he does cry too loud, he's typically so quiet.

Being outside, that reminds me of another story... Usually, in my old apartment, I would take Baboo outside on a leash... otherwise, he'd run too far away -- he's like lightening!  Well, one day, he pushed the screen out of the window and got out on his own. I was frantic when I figured it out (saw his old sister, Misha, sitting by the bathroom window crying for breakfast)... Called him and called him, going nuts!  He came running back because he had to use the litter box... LOL... it was hysterical... this is one of the reasons he remains an indoor-only cat, he has no feline instincts whatsoever.

BT is more outdoor than indoor (even I wish he would stay in) but the garage is his kingdom.  The other day I heard him hollering at the back door.  So I open the door and he coming running inside and straight to the litter box.  Seems it was raining and he had to go, like right now!

Cats are the coolest people, that is definately true.

funny...when i started working nights, Mr. Cat would be waiting for me on the sidewalk in front of the house...as soon as i would get out of the car, he would start in on me, like a nagging wife or something:  "where have you been all night???"  then, one day he figured out that he could sleep all night in bed with my daughter & all day in bed with me & he deicided this was the best thing that ever happened to him...

when i went to dayshift, he figured out rather quickly what time i needed to get up each day & i never had to set an alarm...in the beginning, he also was confused about weekends & thought i needed to get up early those days too...one day i explained it to him & he never woke me up on a day off again, but continued to wake me up for work...i swear, he understood English!!

kindaeasy69 -> RE: Cat Tails (2/10/2007 4:39:54 PM)

lilsubl,

I'll trade you [:D]

Lily has figured out that if she stands in just the right place on the alarm clock it won't go off anymore and she and daddy can go back to sleep.

I have been late to work on more than one occasion.  And I can't decide if "I over slept" sounds any better than "my cat turned off the damn alarm, again".

LMAO  i like the second excuse better!!!  & i would never have traded Mr. Cat for anything in the world...in fact, i turned down a great job in Hawai'i because at that time, he would have had to be quarantined for up to 6 months & i knew he would pine for me...alas, he only lived to be about 21 years old...the one thing he didn't listen to me about:  i had told him i needed him to live to be at least 30...of course, no matter when he died, i wouldn't have been prepared......

ha ha ha.... LOL... that's so funny, smart kitty [;)]  umm... I mean bad, kitty, bad, that's bad... lol.... [:)]

Back when I actually had a house phone (not just a cell phone) Kiwi used to love listening to the answering machine, and figured out how to play back messages to hear the voices... after one too many lost messages, had to put a glass casserole dish as a cover over it... I used to feel bad because I knew she liked to hear it, so, either myself or friends or both would sometimes call up and leave little messages throughout the day for her to keep her company.  Now, I leave my iTunes running for her to listen to.

kindaeasy69 -> RE: Cat Tails (2/10/2007 6:14:51 PM)

Every time someone reply's it remind me of another bizarre behavior that I just take for granted.

sensualmagirl,

With Lily when I'm on the phone she will be all over me, trying to talk to the person on the other end, she can be very vocal.  But I realized she only talks when it's someone she likes.  I'm not sure how she know the difference but she does.

lilsubl,

21 year is very long, I do hope my cats outlive me, but I don't think I will be that lucky.  I'm sorry for you loss.

Not so sure about that.

Beau, my now deceased black tom who would jump on my lap within a millisecond of my sitting down (and then did the pawing, drooling thing until my shirt was wet!), once didnt notice that I was sitting down to eat a curry in front of the TV. He launched himself with his usual vigour, straight into the hot curry, where he remained for as long as it took for him to realise his paws were getting hot. I really shouldnt have, but I couldnt help but laugh as he licked spicy curry sauce from his paws afterwards!

Belle, (Beau's sister), did a similar thing, but whilst I was in the bath. Belle is one of those cats who can open doors, and she gained entry to the bathroom without much difficulty as the lock wasnt on. I couldnt believe it; one moment she was at the edge of the bath looking up at me looking down at her. The next, she was in the water with me, a panicking, drenched feline, covered in bubbles! I couldnt let her lick the bubble bath out of her fur, so I then had to put her under the shower. She didnt speak to me for days after that.
