I have seen a connection with alot of the ads on this site having pictures from the Renaissance fairs on them. Is there a connection between these fairs and the lifestyle, or are these fairs just that popular. I have never been to one, so I am just curious.

Well for one, i can run around and be submissive to my Owner in public and it is acceptable in the SCA. Another reason is BDSM in the wars and tourneys. Talk about a caning. And i can wear my chain mail collar and everyone thinks it is pretty cool looking, not strange. But aside from the fun aspect of the SCA, both my Owner and myself enjoy the historical aspect of the SCA. The SCA is the historical reenactment of the Middle Ages, where as the Ren fairs are more the later period and show version, pretty much more Hollywood. We like the research and making the armor and garb ourselves, as accurate as possible, and setting up a period encampment, even cooking period. And i learned to cast pewter and also am doing Viking Bronze castings now. There does seem to be many "crossovers" as we call them in the SCA.

Thanks for the info, we have a thingy in our town, Feast of St. Claire, but it is more of a civil war era deal. Still people put up tents, cook over fire, have blacksmiths the whole lot. Every pic I see of the Ren fairs shows women displaying their breasts. I thought that was funny. One big breast competition. I will have to check out the earlier ones that you speak of. Thank you CJenny for the info. It is cold here, about 11 degrees. I am sorry to read about your conditions. I hope things are going well for you, at least as well as possible.

Reposted: There is a large sub-culture crossover between the renn/geek/gaming/spirituality/poly communities. I think it has to do with a subset of mainstream culture who are bent towards geeky/offhand/intellectual fantasy interests, have access to the internet, and a luxurious enough life to give them the time and money to not only be online a lot, but also attend events public events on a regular basis.

Generally I think the open mindset that both tend to generate or draw in would be the causation of the big cross over. Renn Faires draw in an ecclectic crowd many times with fairly open minds. The same mindset that one finds at Faire. An open mind contributes to enjoying both

I've been attending Renn Faires for longer than I care to mention. Have been to them in Colorado, Kansas City, and Baltimore. One thing I thought was neat at the Baltimore one was a dungeon museum with all kinds of nifty medieval torture devices and restraint devices. A treat for those into it. Like me. I hope I get to go to a lot more Rennaisance Fairs, I love it.

However it is a place where people go and seem to let out some of their inhibitions. You can buy a flogger or cuffs at a Ren Faire. However they are not lifestyle either...just the tools of the trade from long ago. Most groups have days where they all plan to go on a single day while the faire is running. It is one of the more public events where a bit of oddity is accepted.

One of the few places I can go in vanilla public and wear my dom's 1.5 inch steel collar and big lock and leash and not get weird looks! Last time I got a lot of cool feedback and even free stuff from vendors. But - can't say there is much explicit connection. I just think that ownership and some coarser or more regimented roles are more acceptable in the sense of "role play" . Maybe that in itself IS the connection - free rein to indulge in some public role play.

There are faires where the wearing of collars, ect... are acceptable. There are ones that are not. All faires must also abide by Laws of the state that they are in. True, as Archer has said, many go there are of an open mind, and desire the Medevil atmoshphere. One that I apparently find appealing by my profile. Different bites for different likes. I myself had been involved in faires as a business venue with my work long before my involvelment in D/s. I believe the crossover connection is the same as with any other. We tend to blend what we like.

I could never work up even the smallest amount of interest in any of that stuff. But then after the last week or so of threads I have discovered I am pretty bad..............downright lousy even.....
