I love Renn Faires. I go in full costume, and character, and often if I have a subbie friend who has decided to go with me, tey will actthe part of my slave servant for the day. It is about the only role playing I do get into. The costuming makes slave gear very easy to pull off in public, and you can find some of the best costuming and weaponry there.

I am also a trekkie (I met Leonard Nimoy, it was awesome) and an occasional agmer. Used to do Vampire LARPS back in college.

Yeah, Im a geek.

I've noticed that too. Probably just another interest of people in this lifestyle like riding motorcycles, golf, etc.
Of all the lifestyle people I knew up North no-one had an interest in those fairs.
Personally the Middle and Dark ages aren't my favorite period in history. It must have been cold, wet and miserable during that time, I don't know why anyone would want to celebrate it!
Maybe the Goreans are into that shit.
What kind of food do they have at those Fairs, cowturds?

You can get amazing leatherwork at Faires, as well as nice corsets and things. Oh, and whips, floggers, cuffs, etc. It's all about the shopping, lol.

Could also cross this all over into gothdom...

There certainly is a crossover of people and skills between LARP (Live Actoin Role-Playing), Re-enactment and the BDSM community. At one living history event the vast majority of performer were BDSMers. Personally I've done LARP, Re-enactment (ECW, Tudor and Mediaeval). When Doing LARP there were certainly a high proportion of fetishists and people experimenting with BDSM themes.
The problem with LARP and Re-enactment is when it comes to combat, even though it is as safe a possible you do get the odd knock, possibly fine for masochists, but or also risking hurting people, which sadist may like. Hurt to many people and you are most likely to have everyone out to get you, or be ostrasized. Its probably best for switches.

greetings

I would like to do a survey of how many crossover are there in the BDSM Lifestyle and Renaissance Faires(including SCA and Adria)/Star Trek/Xena/etc. Around where I am there are alot. Oh LaTigress at Ren Faires there are alot of Dommiant Women with whips and cuff hanging from their belts leading submissive men around...women too.
(Where do all these rumors about how werid at night the Ren Faires are I don't know)

Playing safe is as important in the SCA and larping as it is in kink. The point is to kill your friends, not to hurt them. LOL Meaning to deal out sufficient (imaginary) damage to their characters by the rules of the game while not doing any real physical harm to the player. Some re-enactments play harder than others so you can expect a few bruises, but you're not supposed to get any worse than that. Though it happens; I broke a bone or two and had a couple of sprains and ligament tears fighting in the SCA with heavy metal plate mail and hard rattan weapons. Boffer sword fighting tends to be a lot gentler.

Hardcore re-enacter, larper, gamer and kinkster here, would love to meet others of the same mindset but it's been difficult here in North Carolina.

this thread is not new but I just saw it.
I am a rennie and dress up for the occassion. Like everything, if you do just a bit of homework, it all works well and the nilla people won't blink an eye.
When going out to a D/s club, the dress is all leather and steel ( ok latex, etc etc ) but it is all modern. Wear that gear at a Ren event and the nilla people ( esp those with kids ) get a tad bent and even complain. Do the same thing in period attire and they will say .. coooolll.
In Period, slaves ( indentured servents but I will use slave here after ) did not have nice leather, they had simple cloth dresses, not pants, not short shorts not latex, but a simple cotton dress. Well worn, ( it was always left over handed down fabric and even patched together scraps. ) ragged and shows the poverty. The owner was of means.. ( middle class was barely of means but did have the indentured ) the money was spent on the owners clothes. Collars ( if used at all ) were most often very well worn leather or a piece of rope, and just wide enough to do the job, not high tech 4 inch wide bands with 20 lbs of metal studs. The ' leash ' was seldom used as the slave had no where to go. If one was used, it was a simple rope.. ( no not fancy nylon ). shoes if any were the simplist sandels.
Slave could have the task of carrying the tankard and making sure that if he sits it is nice for him ( get there first and sit and wiggle to make sure it is clean so as not to spoil his clothes ) Lots of ideas there, It would be in keeping that slave was fed by hand, by him from his own plate. Most fairs have very bad and un-even ground so I do not recommend hands bound in case of a fall. Again, they had no where to go.

The creation of a great period gard, ( slave outfit and fancy owners outfit ) could be a great task for the slave to do.

wear the proper gear and those in the lifestyle will note the clues ( demeaner etc ) and give a wink and a nod, the vanilla will not blink an eye and no moms and dads with kids would be offended. ( and probably be in a lot of pics )

Well, go check out a few Renaissance faires and get back to us.
At the very least you will find tons of cool stuff to see, hear
and purchase. Where else can you watch people making
chain mail and beating on swords in a smithy, hear madrigals
being sung and Elizabethan curses?! And the costumes are amazing!
You can purchase a costume there if so inclinded.

The amount of kinky behavior and fetish wear allowed
at a given faire does vary from state to state and with
the particular omoters. Certain guilds/groups are very proper
and uptight, others are very bawdy and brash.

A good question,I have often wondered myself.Over here we do something similar,battle re-enactment from various time periods where we also strive for authenticity in all areas.When I started re-enactment over ten years ago,it was my first exposure to kinky types and what I now know as Goreans.I thought at the time,though with my ex who was strongly against 'perverts'(her words for us),here I had found similar people to myself.People who were accepting of other people's little quirks,An alternative society,a society where one can be what they want to be in comfort.I did Iron Age/Roman Britain and there if you wanted to be a slave,no problem.I was a metal worker,something which I am now through that,skills learned have carried through.

ahh, renn faires. well, I agree about the collars, you can wear them and if people do see them,,, they either know exactly what they are looking at, and even if they don't they think it's cool- when anywhere else you'd get this "go away, freak" look. I will never forget the time I heard a deep jolly gruff voice asking if my husband "wanted to trade?" it came from a guy all dressed barbarian like with a matching mate. I cowered like a ( u y i ) while my mate politely declined. Looking back , I think it was cool that he could automatically identify who was D and who was s. Still, I don't want to shock people with my lifestyle ( any part of my lifestyle ) but that doesn't mean I want to hide it either. I want to be with others open minded enough to accept that it works for me and renn faires and similar events have a way of gathering those folk- Phoenix
