I'll take a stab at answering the original question because I too have often wondered the same thing and like everyone else, have my own opinions regarding the reasons behind it.
I remember the first munch I attended in North Carolina over ten years ago and how VERY surprised I was at the level of obesity that was very common there and yes, mostly with the women. A few years ago, I visited a friend in Canada and we went to dinner and I was equally surprised by the lack of obesity that was very evident.
So why such obesity? Well, for starters Americans tend to be a gotta have it when I want it society and everything is generated around the instant gratification. Our food is FULL of hormones and other chemicals and seriously lacks the nutrients our bodies need. Most Americans live in a dehydrated state as well. There are so many reasons associated with poor health that contribute to obesity.
Now add to that mix that everything is moving to online gratification. Lots of people don't walk and shop - they click and shop and because of that, they are cutting out elements of exercise that would normally be present in their day to day. People can work from home, play from home, etc. Then there are all kinds of engrossing online affairs that keep us glued to our chairs where our metabolism just hits rock bottom. No exercise. Munching on foods HIGH in fructose and sucrose. And extended periods of inactivity.
But why more obese people in the lifestyle? An excellent question. A few kind of touched on what I think is part of it - the level of acceptance. On vanilla type sites it seems that the level of acceptance for obesity is lower, just as it is in society as a whole. Within the lifestyle though, there are so many looking for acceptance and apparently finding it, that they decide to stick around. There are people so desperate to serve and be owned and all that rigamaro that size becomes much less of an issue. Plus, let's face it. If you are the only dom in a room full of men - is your appearance REALLY going to play a huge role?
Someone else touched on part of that as well. When you have your own sub to do everything for you, there goes another element of daily exercise that would have been present and every little bit of exercise helps just as every bit lost, hurts. When you no longer get up to get your own drink and instead wait for it to be fetched.. Sedentary lifestyles.
The Marine Corps has an exercise manual that is designed to help the office types stay in shape because they are stuffed behind desks all day handling administrative tasks. Some of the exercisese consist of flexing the legs to press against the top of the desk. The less active a person is, the less calories their body burns and what isn't burned gets stored as.. you guessed it. Fat.
Let's face it. Most of us, are NOT as active as we were 10 years ago and there's a price to pay for that.
