I couldn't help letting out a deep mournful sigh when I heard the band The Police were back together for the Grammys and an even deeper sigh when I heard they will probably be anouncing a new world tour. I just can't help it but I think old acts should die in plane crashes, drugs overdoses or allowed to go senile in some Mansion in Beverly Hills somewhere. Surely the Rolling Stones should have been obliterated in 1972 instead of being wjheeled endlessly round the tour circuits on rocked up zimmerframes. Genesis is already boring the world with a revival. This sort of thing ought to be outlawed. Sting was boring when he was new, now he is in middle age he is more tedious than an old joke. It isn't as if these bands even try to deliver something new, they just regurgitate their old crap which might have seemed good at the time but from this distance it just sounds like any other old pop tunes.

Dang MC you actually managed to offend me hah with that. I think they should all be let be, on a sunny island where they can form jam bands whenever they want. Drugs and booze flow freely, along with sunscreen uhhuh. Kind of like Margaritaville but way cooler. Oh, and I get to be there to hang with my fav should be dead musicians!

I'm impressed with the level of meanness in this post.   Why would you wish such misfortune on anyone for no reason except you act as if they stopped being humans because they were famous?    M

They stopped being relevant musicians because they suck.

e.g.: The Stones. Post "Some Girls" WTF have they done worthwhile?

The music BUSINESS will try to resell the same crap as often as possible.

Now, as a Nixon-Hater, the idea of Killing rock stars is disgusting, but they really shouldn't be allowed out on tour.

:)
Noone, no one group should be relegated to a bad end. That is a scary sad thought for me, I'm goin to the island and everyone is welcome. Please bring fresh water.

In my book at least, pop music is transient and of the moment, it forms part of the zeitgeist of the times and as such is better not regurgitated at a later date. These old bands from what one reads about them and having seen the odd one myself under duress, never have the energy which originally made them famous.

Just me maybe?

I don't think anyone is disagreeing with you on that point, mc... I think its the "should die in plane crashes" part that people have an issue with. Myself, I find pop music to be vapid and totally without worth. But I know some people enjoy it, so let them have their entertainment. I'll switch the channel to something I enjoy.

Edited 'cause apparently my "mean" filter isnt working this morning. Ouch.

They stopped being relevant to whom?
I just bought several old Sting CDs on ebay.

I liked th Stones when Jagger was hot (about 20years ago), but I still don't wish 'em a painful death.

What's it to you if people buy the same old crap?   I actually like the older crap over the new one.   I haven't fallen in love with a new song in years.

Why not?   If people want to see them, and are willing to pay, what could possibly be the harm?

MC - you may be right in the transient thing, but not all songs that are commercially successful are banal rubbish.

It depends on the band or the artist of course, but are you seriously saying that "Every Breath You Take" (Police) for instance, is not a wonderfully captured work of art on the emotions of romantic rejection? I could come up with a list of similar songs that have come out of rock/pop that are not throwaway, but true art.

Here's one of my fav Sting Songs, only we should replace "the Russians" with "the Middle Easterns"..........
quote:

Russians

In Europe and America, there's a growing feeling of hysteria
Conditioned to respond to all the threats
In the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets
Mr. Krushchev said we will bury you
I don't subscribe to this point of view
It would be such an ignorant thing to do
If the Russains love their children too

How can I save my little boy from Oppenheimer's deadly toy
There is no monopoly of common sense
On either side of the political fence
We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

There is no historical precedent
To put words in the mouth of the president
There's no such thing as a winnable war
It's a lie we don't believe anymore
Mr. Reagan says we will protect you
I don't subscribe to this point of view
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
What might save us me and you
Is that the Russians love their children too

FAST REPLY:

People forget that these "banal" artists contributed (for better or worse) to what music today has turned out to be.

Even rap "artists" have been know to reference the Beatles as a group that inspired them.  Eric Clapton was influenced by the bluesman of old.  How many groups have incorporated classical aspects into their works.  Hell, even my father enjoyed the London Symphony Orchestra performing Jethro Tull.

Even the one-hit-wonders are due some merit as they did provide a slight push in the evolution of music.

Rush is going to tour again and they haven't really done anything earth-shattering since "Moving Pictures"; but damn, there is an enormous amount of talent in those three musicians - they've earned their kudos.

Paul McCartney has been pumping out crap for the last decade or more, but his work from the Beatles, Wings, and early solo stuff is legendary.  I won't buy any of his new stuff, but he's earned the right to tour with his old classics (no matter how many dozens of times we may have heard them).

Van Halen is going to tour again with David Lee Roth (now there's a floater in the toilet of life), but maybe it's the nostalgia of it all that will make people turn out to see VH again - even with Dave.

I'm a great lover of music in many forms:  rock, metal, country, blues, phychodelic, classical, jazz, some hip hop, some blue grass, etc.  Some of the artists may be old and tired; but their contributions are incredible.  No, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida makes absolutely no sense and can drone on endlessly, but we still seem to find ourselves bobbing our heads and groaning, "bah-bah-baah-ba-ba-bah-baah-bah-bah" along with the music anyway.

I guess the really disturbing thing of this whole thread was why you wanted to watch the Grammy's in the first place.  All those "stars" telling everyone how much they love themselves - not for me.

I've got nothing against nostalgic oldies, we all have our skeletons in the cupboard but I wouldn't want the stars of my old favourites regurgitating the same old lame stuff either. They just ruins the memories.

I've never liked the Rolling Stones.
I was reading an article a year or two ago about them and evidently Mick Jaegger tried to hit on an attractive woman in her 20's in some club and she walked away with the comment; "Who's that dirty old man?"
I mean how many people in their 20's, 30's or 40's even know who the Rolling Stones and other groups like them even are?
That would be like me in my 20's listening to my parent's music, Guy Lombardo, Jimmy Dorsey, Glen Miller etc!
("Hey! Take the A Train!")
Like the saying goes; "You can never go back."
This kind of thing reminds me of those advertisements on late night t.v. for "Boxcar Willie" or "The Four Tops", "They've sold millions of records in Europe!"
How old is Mick Jaegger now anyway? He has to be close to 65 I would imagine.
Maybe he should be thinking about making a "Depends" commercial. "When I'm onstage and can't go....."   "OWWWWWWWWWWW!"
"There he goes! Five bucks says he's taking a poop!"

I dont wanna talk
About all those old stars
'Cause its hurting me
And they're history
They've made all their songs
And their sell out concerts
Nothing more to say
No more tunes to play

Now Ebay takes them all
The prices rise and fall
There's no mystery
That's their destiny

The vinyl on my shelf
Always made me feel glad
I figured it made sense
etc

E
