http://catb.org/jargon/html/N/nerd.html

nerd: n.

1. [mainstream slang] Pejorative applied to anyone with an above-average IQ and few gifts at small talk and ordinary social rituals.

2. [jargon] Term of praise applied (in conscious ironic reference to sense 1) to someone who knows what's really important and interesting and doesn't care to be distracted by trivial chatter and silly status games. Compare geek.

The word itself appears to derive from the lines “And then, just to show them, I'll sail to Ka-Troo / And Bring Back an It-Kutch, a Preep and a Proo, / A Nerkle, a Nerd, and a Seersucker, too!” in the Dr. Seuss book If I Ran the Zoo (1950). (The spellings ‘nurd’ and ‘gnurd’ also used to be current at MIT, where ‘nurd’ is reported from as far back as 1957; however, knurd appears to have a separate etymology.) How it developed its mainstream meaning is unclear, but sense 1 seems to have entered mass culture in the early 1970s (there are reports that in the mid-1960s it meant roughly “annoying misfit” without the connotation of intelligence.

Hackers developed sense 2 in self-defense perhaps ten years later, and some actually wear “Nerd Pride” buttons, only half as a joke. At MIT one can find not only buttons but (what else?) pocket protectors bearing the slogan and the MIT seal.

http://catb.org/jargon/html/G/geek.html

geek: n.

A person who has chosen concentration rather than conformity; one who pursues skill (especially technical skill) and imagination, not mainstream social acceptance. Geeks usually have a strong case of neophilia. Most geeks are adept with computers and treat hacker as a term of respect, but not all are hackers themselves — and some who are in fact hackers normally call themselves geeks anyway, because they (quite properly) regard ‘hacker’ as a label that should be bestowed by others rather than self-assumed.

One description accurately if a little breathlessly enumerates “gamers, ravers, science fiction fans, punks, perverts, programmers, nerds, subgenii, and trekkies. These are people who did not go to their high school proms, and many would be offended by the suggestion that they should have even wanted to.”

Originally, a geek was a carnival performer who bit the heads off chickens. (In early 20th-century Scotland a ‘geek’ was an immature coley, a type of fish.) Before about 1990 usage of this term was rather negative. Earlier versions of this lexicon defined a computer geek as one who eats (computer) bugs for a living — an asocial, malodorous, pasty-faced monomaniac with all the personality of a cheese grater. This is often still the way geeks are regarded by non-geeks, but as the mainstream culture becomes more dependent on technology and technical skill mainstream attitudes have tended to shift towards grudging respect. Correspondingly, there are now ‘geek pride’ festivals (the implied reference to ‘gay pride’ is not accidental).

Touche`

I have to admit that if I found a girl that was a geek I wouldnt want her to leave.  It would help if she is a gamer as well.

I once worked a Star Trek memorabilia auction..............and the HOTTEST WOMAN EVER TO WALK THE FACE OF THE EARTH catwalked into area, and started socializing with the regular Trekkies.  This girl was the real-deal; hell - she could probably speak all the regional dialects of Klingon.  Anyway, this uber-foxy gal  was dressed in a skin-tight, leopard-print outfit, and had to be about 6'0, 135 pds of svelte, platinum-blonde hotness.

This chick know EVERYTHING about Star Trek.  My guess is that she might have been married to a Trekkie "nerd".

Reading fargle's definitions, it seems I'm more of a nerd than a geek.

I suppose I totally disqualified myself for geekdom earlier this evening when I toyed with pitching my new iPod (Christmas gift from well-meaning parents) because I couldn't be bothered to navigate the irksome help screens required to learn how to put music on it. Don't they make manuals anymore?

On the other hand, I've been the Star Trek conventions and once had lunch with James Doohan. That has to count for something.

Rules of geek/nerd-ery include:

D&D, Ren fairs, SCA, LARPing, Stark Trek, anything by H.P. Lovecraft, etc.

A good friend of mine owned either the first or second gaming shop in Southern California. Google "Eric and the Dread Gazebo" for a laugh. He's Ed, the GM in the story. Annnyway... I've played table top RPs at his house with friends in high school.

After high school I played in Vampire: The Masquerade. Malkavians Rule! (And Brujah aren't too shabby.)

I've been to RenFaire several years and slept in Tent Town with two friends who worked RenFaire one year.

Mom LOVES Star Trek, Star Wars, Galactica, Serenity, etc. And as such I've watched quite a bit through the years. But I can't speak a word of Klingon.

Ohh... and Mum went into labor while watching Dr. Who. I'm convinced that's what spawned my interest in Sci-Fi and British accents. The two combined are absolutely brilliant.

I've played Magic: The Gathering with an ex-boyfriend several times. But I've never made up a deck of my own.

I've got a PS2, Genesis and an N64 - but I mostly stick to RPGs and fighting games (Mortal Kombat and Soul Calibur stuff) for the PS2 when I'm playing.

I've been collecting quite a bit of anime, if that counts. I've also got some hentai... but that's on the computer in a special folder, away from prying eyes.

My whip wielding warrior in RuneScape can kick all sorts of behind at lvl 101, overall melee. Not to mention she's decent with a bow or a mage staff.

However... I have never Larp'd. Nor do I intend to start. Honestly, they kinda scare me.  But I would be quite tempted to CosPlay if I could find some friends to drag to a Con with me and if I had any killer CosPlay costume ideas.
