My pc crashed yesterday.  It's a custom made computer made by a friend who does that kind of stuff.  It's about four years old (ancient I know) but was upgraded about two years ago.  Anyway...got a message that I had a possible worm.  Ran a scan which got up to about 50,000 files scanned and 105 threats found.  Major threats.  Trojans, worms viruses.  Lovely!  It never quite finished scanning because that's when everything froze up.  Rebooted.  Opening screen is blue with some of my desktop icons on it.  All unresponsive to the mouse.  Unplugged it and sent it off to the guy who builds them.  I'm only hoping that he's able to recover some photos on it that I had yet to back up.
Anyway...I'll most likely have it fixed if possible, but I am in the market for a Mac.
I don't know much about them, but I hear that they aren't nearly as vulnerable to threats.  Is this true?  I'll be using the Mac for graphic design work (an industry standard) and I assume that the Mac Pro will be sufficient.  The computer will be used strictly as a work computer.  I am really not techy at all and know nothing about all of the details that they list with the computers.  Would one of the I Macs be good too...in terms of memory, speed, things like that?  See, I don't even know the proper wording.  :)
Thanks.

If it's just a corrupted Winders, then it's very likely the photos will be easily recovered.

Kicking it would have come a little closer to how I really wanted to deal with it.

I believe I will be going shopping in the next few weeks.  I wasn't really ready to spend all of that money just yet.

You can just go to the mall to shop. You don't need to buy today, and the guys at the Apple Retail store in the mall can answer ALL your questions, and give you a hands-on tour.

No. I use Linux exclusively and resell Red Hat Enterprise to satisfy the needs of our corporate customers.

I *RESPECT* Macs, which is much rarer. And Apple, too, because they "Get It", ( as opposed to the order takers and cashiers selling PCs ).

AND you get to go to the mall ( where maybe you'll find a nice pair of shoes, for instance.. )

Avast is free anti-virus software if used for home use. The initial setup uses a small footprint on-access scanner that deals with worms, trojans, viruses and spy ware up front in a sooner rather than later format - small footprint meaning its resource use is low. Other virus packages offer the same types of protection, but if you're used to things like Norton's rtvscan, you're probably not used to running it due to the rather large amount of resources it can consume. I'm not trying to compare packages or tell you which is best. For me, what's best is what I'll run. After being a Norton and McFee user for several years, I switched to Avast and haven't had a problem since.

Even if your disk is not fully recoverable, it's possible to access data on it. The simplest method is to attach it as a slave on another computer, let windows assign it a drive letter. At that point, you can copy off anything you want to keep. It won't save applications, but it will save data.

Good luck.

NOD32. Free A/V is worth what you pay for it.

For me, the SIMPLEST method is to download a copy of Knoppix, burn it to a CD, and boot the PC into a desktop. Then click on the harddrive partition with the data on it, and copy to a USB key or something.

Saves you the trouble of opening up a computer, messing with cables, getting dusty, etc.

And no AV is worth anything if not used - which is how you get hundreds of infections. I have Norton on one notebook, Avast on another. The only one I've had to de-worm in the past year is the Norton protected box.

Shrug.

Either way, regardless of what you use, actually using it is a big part of the key to avoiding the original problem.

I had Mcaffee (?) running on the crashed pc.
I have AVG on my laptop and haven't had a problem with it.
Is that good protection?

Yay! Go Mac! Go Mac!
And when you figure out how to save Yahoo Messenger chats (with the newet version) on your new Mac, please let me know.
I posed that question on a Messenger help board and the only responses I got were "buy a PC".

Try using GAIM on your mac. It's a multiprotocol cross platform Chat client, which should save messages locally when told to.

AVG is damn good, even the free version I have found more stable and with a better success rate than many paid for solutions (dont get me started on norton/symantec). Here at work we even use the corporate versions of AVG and with a couple of hundred PCs permanantly online we have not had an infection in years other than ones that were deliberately introduced by the IT staff for testing.

These days, primarily because Symantec/Norton hooks SO deeply into windows, and causes so much grief trying to get it the fuck out, it's the LAST choice...

Poor Aileen, you did say you werent techy and the posts you are getting must have your head swimming! I'm working on a Computer system where you have NO hardware to worry about i call it the pen and paper... no really though i have Norton and the only trouble i got with it is it does consume too much ram slowing the pc down like mad, aside from that aslong as you have both Firewall & Antivirus the net aint a problem, too many people either have one or the other, Antivirus only good when a malicious application starts but dosent stop those pesky bots harvesting info from your machine like IP addies etc and Firewall only good to stop people trying to find open ports but no good if you download a zip file with bugs all over the place in it as once opened KAPOWI steeeeeerike! On my old old old Dell they have a restore facility upon blue screening which enables you to boot back to the last succesful boot up, abit like system restore but right at the beginning, ask at the shops if they have that facility.

Of course the new Mac Pro ( the desktops) are pretty sweet machines, and can be made to run Windows XP, Linux or both if you need it to - and there are two ways to do it:

1. If you want to run Windows within the MacOS you can use:
Parallels
2. If you want to run Windows or Linux by itself on the Mac Pro you can use:
Boot Camp
