Just received a post card from Shebani...Says that unfortunately due to drought his crops have withered away, he lost his bucket and was feeling a little "down."

But with his "never say die" attitude he managed to join a group that has gave him somethng to believe in...He is given three square meals daily, lots of practical training...and no longer has to toil in the fields....He mentioned that joining al qaeda has been a great experience and he hopes to be able to visit the U.S. soon....

Whew!...And for a moment there I was worried...

Fine by me. Just don't expect my respect (not that it's a highly coveted commodity) if you're practicing your vice/addiction while starting a whole thread to slam other people for theirs.

I suppose we read two different things into his statements.  The rail isn't against obese people, it's against obese people who refuse to accept the consequences of their vice.  I'm against throat cancer victims demanding the government to pay for their chemotherapy (or suing the cigarette company.)  I'm against alcoholics demanding their disease make them qualify for worker's compensation benefits.  I'm against the magic pill society that makes drug companies and doctors rich, while making their clients dependent on such.  I'm against the deluge of advertising teaching children and adults that they should be drinking soda pop instead of water.

The attitudes that 'He' is responsible for my mistakes ensures that I will lose the freedoms to make those mistakes, if I wish to.  This is exactly why we had Prohibition in the 20s, and why organized crime rakes in billions of dollars in drugs today.

i am canadian, not american, but it is similar enough that i feel my input is valid.....i am fat becasue i am poor...i exercise at the campus gym 4 times a week..but i eat Mr. Noodles and Kraft Dinner (mac and cheese) almost every day beacsue i have no money...when i am at home at my parent's place i eat whole foods and organic veggies.. but i can't even afford the not organic veggies when i'm at school...the life of a student just leads to weight gain....but that dosen't mean i'm going to stop trying...i have 4 months at home each year and i usually loose 20-40 Lbs.....if i can just manage to not gain it all back....hmmmmmm

Dear kate,

I'll try to be gentle with this, as I know it's a touchy subject.  Please, learn to cook.

I make pasta with almost no fat.  I buy three pounds of tomatoes, boil them, crush them, add a bit of salt and sugar (maybe two tablespoons) oregano, basil, thyme, rosemary, and let it simmer for ten to fifteen minutes.  I could bake a chicken breast in the onion (buy them on the bone, and pull it off the bone once cooked) and slice the breast up, toss it in with the pasta, and voila: an extremely healthy meal, that takes less than half an hour to prepare.  That saves you from two hours of exercise you would have to burn off eating prepackaged dinners.

If there's more interest, I can gladly post five or ten simple, delicious, and inexpensive recipes.  The reason we think good food is expensive, is because we've been taught to only buy pre-packaged food.  Learning to peel tomatoes is a dead art.

Toss em in boiling water for about twenty seconds then dunk em in ice water.  The skin peels right off.

Also works well on subs from N.J.

The more I think about it, the more I realize the most apt thing that this "bovine" American (yep, Stephan, that's the adjective Tre used) can contribute to this thread is a link to Edgar Guest's syrupy but telling poem "Sermons We See." I first came across it in Boy Scouts, 20+ years ago, and the opening lines have lingered in my memory ever since.

I'd rather see a sermon
than hear one any day;
I'd rather one should walk with me
than merely tell the way.

Another stanza seems particularly fitting for this thread, especially since Stephan and I read things so differently.

For I might misunderstand you
and the high advice you give,
But there's no misunderstanding
how you act and how you live.

Junk food is expensive! Add up the pepsi, twinkies, chips, doughy pizza, wonder bread, fast food, mcnuggets, greasy cold cuts, processed shit packed as edible

then add up $ of brown rice, beans, simple vegetables ( even frozen) fruit in season, water to drink, non branded stuff like corn flakes in a bag, soy, whole chicken,  fresh fish, +

Good, healthy food will fill you up, give more vites, and you eat less. Junk -- 2 hours later-- you need more doritos.....

TreSwank -> RE: Overweight Americans: Masters of Rationalization (2/19/2007 7:11:24 PM)

You're as right as rain, sugarcandy.  Did you know that you can get a month's supply of rice for ten-dollars at most grocery stores?  Oatmeal is pretty damn cheap as well.  Alot of folks don't realize that frugal living is actually healthier than the average, "stuff your face" American way of eating. (I'm not even going into that realm)

Fresh fish? i don't know where you live, but i'm less than 20 miles from the Atlantic, and on the average, fish is more expensive than beef [&:]

Robert, you did rationalize your weight from 290 onwards.   Your doctor was 100 percent correct to tell you to go off your diet.   Cutting back calories does not mean cut it in half to a dangerously low amount.

Agreed on that point, fresh fish is too expensive even for me & I live in Michigan land of the Great Lakes. Yesterday while grocery shopping there was not a whole chicken to be had for under 11usd.
But...I got a great pork loin roast for 4usd which will make 6 meals.
It is doable. Be creative. The preservatives and crap in processed foods are horrendous for any ones body & it is never too late to make the change.

sleazybutterfly -> RE: Overweight Americans: Masters of Rationalization (2/20/2007 5:28:47 AM)

I am fat because I eat too much..end of story.  I have put it off so long that now I am grasping at straws to be lighter by my wedding in three months (getting the dress in two).  I keep thinking of all the time I should have spent on this, I could have lost a lot at even just a pound a week over the years.  Here I am trying to find a dress, and I know I will hate the way I look in any of them.

Being fat sucks (for me), and I have no one to blame but myself.  I am sure I am an emotional eater, but there were other ways I could have dealt with them or been taught to deal with them.  This is something that will stop in me though, and I refuse to pass it down to my children.

This first few days are the hardest, if I can get through them, I will be okay.  Its hard to turn around 30 years of bad eating in one day, but slowly it will work itself out.  I hate trying to shop healthy on a tight budget, but it is possible.  I think so many times we are not only addicted to the bad food, but we are addicted to "fast foods".  Most don't want to take the time anymore and actually prepare a meal.

If others are happy with the way they look..that is fine, I have nothing against that.  Its just time to stop blaming so many other things in life for being overweight, and realize what you are putting in your mouth everyday.  There are med. problems that do make it harder, but the majority of us just take in more than we burn off.  I used to lose 3-4 lbs a week eating better, now with the bulimia having messed my metabolism up, I will do good to reverse it so I can lose at all.  I just don't believe we are aware of exactly what we consume in a day, and how many calories are involved.  If you are addicted to food, you sort of zone out and before you know it the bag of chips is gone.

I don't know..just felt like babbling today, and I am disgusted with myself for not taking better care of my body over the years so that I could be able to feel good about the way I look not only for a special occasion, but every single day.  I have to realize I am worth the effort it takes to fight the power that food has over me.

Stephann -> RE: Overweight Americans: Masters of Rationalization (2/20/2007 6:08:53 AM)

cjenny,

I saw chicken breast on sale for 99 cents a pound at meijer.coms that's a pretty good buy, if you ask me.

Also, for folks with a freezer or who plan ahead and aren't afraid to use a knife, can save a huge amount of money by purchasing meat cuts from a wholesaler.  For the price of three family steak dinners from the supermarket, buying the cut will yield eight steak dinners (roughly, the same cost as buying 8 prepackaged or microwavable dinners.)  Same is true for buying five (plucked and cleaned) chickens, two will be 'free.'  Retailers get rich not because of high prices, but because they are successful at convincing consumers that they shouldn't cook, and shouldn't plan meals in advance, because meals can be made by 'magic' in the microwave.  Consumers, in turn, become too lazy to spend the time and effort to eat healthy, because they are convinced it takes too much time, or effort.  How do you suppose they managed to survive without microwaves a hundred years ago?

Once you find that spark of motivation, things will change for the better.  It might seem slow and arduous at the beginning, but a month or two into the world of healthy eating, and you'll start burning off the pounds like nobody's business.  Lots of cardiovasular exercise mixed in with a smart nutrition plan WILL burn calories, and undo years of "American style" eating.

While some heftier folks would like to displace their own poor self esteem by pointing the finger at skinny people as being "unhealthy" (role reversal), individuals who lose a desired amount of weight do tend to feel better about themselves.  Don't feel disgusted with yourself, hon..............just DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
