If you had your choice of spending one week in the Siem Reap/Angkor Wat area of Cambodia or one week in Ireland, which would you choose, and why?

Hello A/all,

I would pick Angkor Wat, but then that part of the world was my specialization as an undergraduate.

Which is not to say I wouldnt jump at the chance to go to Ireland, but...

I'd probably go with Angkor on the theory that a chance to go to Cambodia is rarer than one to visit Ireland.

Depends on what I'm going for.  Vacation?  Ireland.  Experience?  Cambodia.  Relaxation?  Ireland.  Cambodian hookers?  Thailand.

See, it's all in what you want.

Angkor Wat for sure. Check out the arial shots on Google Earth.

Sinergy, isn't there a huge reservoir around there from the same era as the temples?

Z.

I dont recall.  My studies were more post world war 2, although I did spend a couple of weeks on Cambodian early history.   I studied this in 1984, and as I posted, this was not my specialty.

Ireland because I have never been there and I have been to Angkor several times. That being said I recommend to everybody to take any chance they get to see Angkor Wat, and the somewhat less known but much more extensive and impressive neighbouring Angkor Thom. They are amazing!!

I agree with Benji!
I've been to Ireland 3 times and have dual American/ Irish citizenship as my grandparents came from Donegal so I can live there if I want. But, I've never been to Cambodia.
I've been to about 40 different countries and Ireland is one of the most beautiful hands down.
Arpig, you've never been to Ireland?
It's only about $650 round trip on Aer Lingus out of Boston!
And that's in the "high" season. In Nov-Jan you can get flights on Aer Lingus for about $300 round trip out of Boston.
It's just about 5 1/2 hours to Shannon.

Always wanted to go, but just never had the time/money/opportunity to go. Also I am a little worried I'd never want to come back :)

Take my word for it the hookers in south east Asia are way overrated...Quite provincial in their approach to sex.  Stuff you and I might consider to be rather ordinary like 69 they find to be reprehensible.  Now I will agree I have not been there in some time but that was what I found almost universially in the area.  Now the hookers in the butt huts of Nevada will do most anything you are willing to pay them for.
As for the choice ...I have been to most everyplace in S.E. Asia... I have not been to Ireland but I would go to Amsterdam or Denmark first ....and yes it would be for the hookers.

Interesting question....for my historical curiosity as well as being in Cambodia, a country off the beaten tourist path would be great....so then it would depend on my mood...all factors considered (safety issues, etc) I would love to go to Ireland too, drink Guinness and beers in general, go visit historic sites....difficult choice...but because assuming a genie would pay my ticket, I would pick Cambodia...more far away, less likely for me to buy a ticket and go there so I would pick Angkor Wat....it would be more likely for me to go to Ireland later, and plus I have friends in the UK, so I would be close by anyways.

Let's see... in my opinion...

Cambodia... mosquitos, weird food for me, hot & humid weather

Ireland... no snakes, green land, country of my ancestors, waterford crystal, guiness, whiskey...

The choice for me would be obvious

There are spots in the Irish countryside so beautiful as to take your breath away. If you're ever near there go to the Hill of Tara in County Meath on a clear sunny day.

Angor Wat is wonderful as well I'm sure but the land of my ancestors is where I'd be headed.

Siem Reap/ Ankgor Wat

I would go there  because I have read a couple of books about people of this region, and academic films. I have also known Hmong people, and they make me totally interested in that part of the world.

A difficult one.

I've spent a lot of time in Ireland so can say from experience it makes for a great holiday. Never been to Cambodia but I can imagine it will offer you something you won't get in the West.

If it were me, I'd go Cambodia purely for experiencing something new and very different.

If you pick Ireland, you can guarantee first class hospitality.

Not only are they overrated.....they're quite dangerous ta boot. I spent a year and half in different parts of the Orient and never had any sexual encounters with the indigenous women. When I first got there all they talked about was the burning sensation and the fucked-up Penicillin shots. After watching ''The Beach'' with Leonardo DiCaprio, I've decided I've had enough of the Orient.

Anyways.... I'd rather go to Ireland. I'd especially like to visit /walk through the old cobblestone neighborhoods of Belfast.

Cambodia -- a globe trotting friend of mine said it's the only place that he has made a second trip to so far.

I haven't been there yet, but have been to Ireland, and I'd recommend that too.

I live here, and I'd still pick Ireland

As much as I've travelled here, and all that I've seen, She still takes my breath away on a DAILY basis.

For those choosing our fair Isle, and wish to go beyond the usual tourist traps... I highly recommend this guide book:

Enjoy!

I'd go to Cambodia, not because I've got anything against Ireland, I've had many a good night in the watering holes of Dublin and Belfast but I've travelled to several countries in the far east but not Cambodia and everyone I meet tells me Cambodia is one of the best countries in the far east to vist.
