Stropping is the final sharpening stage for items such as straight edge razors. One sharpens a knife or razor with an abrasive. Under a microscope though the edge generally curves away from the sharpening stone, leaving a curl. Stropping is using, usually a jeweler's rouge (red iron oxide) and pulling the knife or razor backwards to remove this curl. Done properly the knife or razor can be lightly scraped forward against the hair of the arm, and it should act as a razor does, removing the hair cleanly but not cutting. Simply find a smooth piece of leather, or even a flat leather belt and some jewelers rouge. Barbers have the strop (leather strip with rouge) often attached to the wall, so they can pull it taunt, and then strop the razor a few times away from the sharp edge, essentially polishing the very edge and making it razor sharp.
