The SS# was NEVER supposed to be the all-purpose identifier that it became, and this measure is long overdue. Everyone and their dog wants your SS for everything, and they have no right to it (i've been asked for mine to get a video club membership, and also to rent a storage unit... FYI, it's much easier to make one up than argue about it). Having twice been notified by different data warehouses that my personal identification had been leaked, and i might be a victim of ID theft (which, without a fairly recent CA law, they never would have done), i have no sympathy.
Personally, i'd love to see the entire "credit" and personal data collecting/marketing industry crash and burn... they're nothing but parasites.
