Status: offline 		Your cats clearly are gifts from the Divine. So I would not consider treating him, unless absolutely necessary.
 
Training is a good suggestion.
 
You may also consider chirping at him when you go somewhere and you want him to follow you and hopefully he will comprehend and not follow you when you do not chirp.

Status: offline 		Aqua and I have, not one, but two cats who glue themselves to us at every opportunity. Fortunately for our mutual sanity and peace of mind, one is still a kitten and finds the other cat absolutely fascinating, which alleviates much of our requirement to play with him. They're both very insistent, though, that when they want love, they want love NOW. My parents also have a former stray who simply can't get enough attention... if you give it to him, you're stuck with him until he gets hungry.

With your cat, this could be a permanent thing, or it could be a phase that he grows out of as he becomes more comfortable in his new home, depending on how long you've had him already. I know that this sounds a little harsh, but perhaps you should try training your cat to give you some space? I find that a squirt bottle filled with water works wonders to dissuade a cat from something. That, or I've found that pets respond well to Pavlovian behavioral conditioning - if your cat associates a particular action with a positive or negative reinforcement, he'll be more or less likely to continue that action.

Status: offline 		i have 2 cats like that.  One of them drive me nuts with all her talking.  I wake up to her walking back nand forth on my stomach meowing and meowing and no matter how much i push her off my stomach, she watns to get back on.  She follows me in the bathroom meowing.. and meowing.  She likes to be under my feet too.  (which is where she is at)

I just sort of ignore it.  Except its hard when she's always talking.  Never sure what she wants.  But i do know if i break out a can of tuna fish and put some in her bowl (and the other's) she gets busy for awhile.  I've also a golden retriever that messes with her and a snotty little kitten that is always fighting for dominance and her older brother that bugs her for awhile. 

the DOG is the WORSE.  OMG - that dog wont get out of being up my butt.  i go to the bathroom and it signals to the dog "play time!"  i move a muscle and the dog is in my face.. and most the time she likes to lay behind my chair.. so i have to be verra careful about getting up.

Status: offline 		i moved into a house one time that came with what the owner said was an outdoor cat...turns out he was only an outdoor cat because she disliked him & wouldn't let him in...after living there for a couple of days, he walked into the house, took one look at me & his eyes sort of glazed over with adoration & for the next 2 years til he died, i was completely adored...every evening, after supper, i would sit on the couch...he would sit next to me & lick my left hand...he would lick it all over the top for about an hour at least, then he would use his paws to turn it over & lick all over the palm...when he was finished, he would lie there for the next 2 or 3 hours & purr, drool & look at me with pure love & gratitude that i had come into his world...he was elderly, & his outdoor years had weakened him, so i only had him for 2 years, but it was a time when i really needed his unconditional adoration...

as far as the suggestions here, the training is, IMO, the best advice...cats are quite trainable, contrary to some people's ideas on the subject...with training, he can be a wonderful addition to your life...because he already adores you, i'm sure that he will love doing things for you...treats can help, but he will probably do what you want for the praise alone...

Status: offline 		i really appreciate all the responses.  While at the vet's office, i did start reading a magazine article about cat training....that does sound like something that might work (although it sounded kind of time consuming).
 
Now he just did a new thing.  He must have wandered away for a few minutes and found himself in my son's room, alone, but with the door open (he rarely ever goes in there).  i could hear him crying but i didn't know where he was.  So i go find him and he comes out all happy and ready for attention....like he hasn't seen me in hours!
 
i did push him away the other day because he went outside for 5 minutes and came back in wanting to get up on me and i was trying to type.  He did move away.  i really hate doing that but i think i am going to have to some times.
 
Neither of these cats eat treats, nor do they get into catnip, nor will they use a litterbox.  Yes, i guess it is time for some training!
 
BTW...anybody EVER seen a submissive cat?  i just don't think they exist! 
 
Thanks again everyone and i will welcome any more ideas as well.

getting another cat will not help because it will just get some poor pussy beat up..he wont share well i'm sure..

Cats are natural doms, I think. Maybe that's why I love mine so much. He, too, was a stray and spent time in the shelter, and he loves to get under my feet. The winter here in Maine is keeping him indoors, and he hates that and is bored. I play with him more than usual, pick him up and cuddle him for a while right before I go to work and immediately after I come home, etc., but he is still bored and restless. I should get a companion for him, but I like having just the one. I owned two cats for 16 years. At any rate, he'll get you in line one of these days. It's inevitable. lol.

i sort of inherited another ancient cat one time & she would get needy & get up on the desk & insert herself between me & whatever i was doing...what i learned to do with her was to give her special time 2-3 times per day, when i would just sit down & she would climb up on me, put her head next to mine & a paw on each shoulder & we would just sit quietly together, no distractions--her time with me...in this way, she became mine & i became hers...& between those times, she would contentedly sleep in some other part of the house while i went about my life.....

Status: offline 		I've always had cats and it really does sound like your cat is a very well socialized animal that got traumatized by being abandoned. Give him affection/attention and in time he should get less clingy.

Training is a good idea no matter what though. Teaching him the basics like stay or come here will make your life easier and his life safer.

Yes, my cat loves it when I am lying down to read, which I do for a couple of hours every night before bed. He lies down next to my shoulder, sometimes with a paw on me, sometimes with my arm curled around him, and he knows that except when I have to get up to go to the bathroom, I'll be right there with him. Saturday and Sunday mornings I take a little extra time before getting out of bed to pat him and talk to him. Then he seems fine when life cranks up.

Since he likes to be outdoors, do you have a window with a tree nearby? Maybe put up some bird houses and feed the birds for the winter... my cats used to LOVE watching the birds all day long.

An aquarium so he can watch the fish? Again, they find this entertaining.

A cat herb garden with kitty grass and cat nip? I can't grow a cat herb garden, they chomp it the minute it comes up, but other cats are more patient.

I think it's he needs that outdoor-sy feeling, my guess anyhow...

I have two and they keep themselves entertained, until they feel needy and demand your attention... I call the girl a Domme in a Fur suit (I just think she's cute when she's sits on the bed demanding me to go to bed by meowing really loudly at me, if only she could talk)... LOL... The little boy though, he's just a big goof ball and his way of demanding attention is by sitting on you or headbutting you.

paper bags from the grocery store, caps off of water bottles
and milk jugs (especially on linolium flooring), rope, yarn,
empty spools used for thread, the long belts on bathrobes,
and the ties on your company-best-formal-room-$4,000
curtains.
 
I kept an old piece of carpet around and a piece of firewood
for claw-sharpening.  If the kitties are indoor only, definately
get some kitty greens from the pet store.  They need extra
vitamins and minerals too.
 
Keep them away from things that they might ingest or swallow,
pills, panty hose, poisonous plants, etc.
 
Be proud and honored by your new position in life,
you are now the owned and collared property of a proud feline.

Status: offline 		We keep one cat in the utility room and the other in daughter's part of the house (she has 3 rooms with a door in the hallway) and both are outside when it's not pouring rain.  It's the only way we can keep the furniture from being scratched.

Status: offline 		Often a superior stratching post will cure furniture savaging. Not some wussy carpet wrapped cardboard tube either. It is the piddly size and unstable feel of comercial scratching posts that makes cats prefer sturdy furniture, not distain for your property.

Bolt a landscaping railroad-tie to a wide base board, 3 or 4 feet on a side.Starting about a foot off the ground, wrap it tightly with thick sisal cord. I used glue to hold it in place. Do NOT soak the sisal cord first, it will stretch, not shrink. Place a perch on top, offset so they can climb on it. If the perch is at chest height it makes an ideal petting station. Dangle toys and add extra perches as the spirit moves you. They will climb this artificial tree before they climb the drapes or walls. Add a spiral of sisal to the base to cover all scratching angles, vertical and horizontal.

Honeysuckle is as good as catnip and encourages scratching. If you can get a healthy sized log and secure it to a firm base you will have one happy kitty. Sand exposed wood occasionally to freshen the post and encourage its use.

Replacing undesirable behaviour with appropriate behaviour is key. Give them a better alternative before you try to disuade them from present habits.

Status: offline 		I just love this thread!  Cats are so wonderful, and I love cat stories.  And lots of good ideas, too.  I've been trying to figure out a way to bring a tree into the house.... hmm... railroad tie....

My oldest cat loves pasteboard boxes.  Since I've lived in a state of half-unpacked every since I've had her, there are always a few around, and near each of them is a little pile of shredded cardboard that she's cleaned off the corner!

One of the babies (4 years old now!) likes to play with rubber bands.  She doesn't eat them, just chirps at them and rolls them so they wiggle on their own, chases them around, and sometimes carries them in her little mouth.  It's so cute!

I didn't like cats until about 15 years ago.  I'm so glad I learned!

Status: offline 		Yes I have that problem... and I call her Shadow.  *ss*  Sometimes I will play with her and just walk room to room with no purpose at all other than to watch her shadow me. 

One thing that might help is to get him another play mate.  I have three and they entertain each other quite a bit and need less entertainment from me.  Though there are times, that only my attention will do.
