pahunkboy -> ear infection (2/16/2007 5:38:16 AM)

In recent years, one has to jump thru hoops for antibiotics, I know my body. I have an ear infection.

Not only must I wait- I will be put thru a battery of tests to get a simple antibiotic.

I fricken hate that.

BTW- my brother is at moms....  to  "HELPPPPPPPPP"  fkkk.

Ouch... I'm sorry, I feel for you, I tend to get ear infections a lot now... I never had them as a child, but, as an adult it started.

I had an ear and sinus infection back at Christmas/New Years. However, I didn't have to go through a battery of tests, my doctor (actually, Nurse Practitioner) looked in my ears and down my throat and agreed... gave me antibiotics and a prescription for nasal spray.

I am sick (again) now, with a sinus infection (again) and bronchitis.  I went yeterday, especially since I felt the ears starting to bother me. She looked, poked around, listened, etc, etc, and could see I was having the infection, gave me antibiotics and prescription-strength cough syrup.

So, if I'm really sick, I have not had a problem. I'm wondering if maybe it's your doctor? Is he/she a new doctor to you? Do they know you have a history of this? What kinds of tests, or is it just you have to pay a visit to them?

edited to add: I hope you get better soon. Ear Infections are a pain -- literally and figuratively.

Rumtiger -> RE: ear infection (2/16/2007 5:56:42 AM)

from what I knew, there where only two ways to get rid of an ear infection, get the amoxocillin out or rupture the eardrum and let all the shit drain out.

For some reason I could never bring myself to do number 2.

Edit: guess what I was taught to do in the case of an ingrown toenail.

cjenny -> RE: ear infection (2/16/2007 5:59:20 AM)

To help alleviate some of the pain, use a hair dryer set on low heat gently gently pointed at your ear. Or use a heating pad while you're laying down, lay ouchy ear against that.
Hope you feel better soon.

Celeste43 -> RE: ear infection (2/16/2007 6:00:22 AM)

No amoxicillin thanks, I'm allergic to penicillin. I went to the doctor about a month back, ears filled with fluid. It was obvious they wouldn't drain on their own so he gave me an antibiotic, no hoops needed.

sensualmagirl -> RE: ear infection (2/16/2007 6:13:07 AM)

oh, I was reading some of the tips from CJ... the heating pad was absolutely a life saver for me. Even with antibiotics (not amoxicyllin, something else is what I got), I was in serious pain for quite a long time, I would have gone nuts without my heating pad.

Also, I would put boiling hot water in a bowl and a towel over my head and breathe in the steam and turn my head to the side to get the steam in my ears as well... also helps the pores on your face [;)]  I use the steam thing for all my head colds, I don't know if it works for sure, but feels good.

windchymes -> RE: ear infection (2/16/2007 8:19:58 AM)

There aren't many tests you can do to diagnose an ear infection unless there is pus-drainage actually coming out of the ear.  And if that's happening, the eardrum is probably already ruptured.  So the docs are usually quicker to prescribe an antibiotic for a LIKELY ear infection, which would be pain and pressure, maybe dizziness, and having a fever will make your case even better :)

Rumtiger -> RE: ear infection (2/16/2007 8:35:02 AM)

noones gonna ask me about the toenails?...peh..

windchymes -> RE: ear infection (2/16/2007 8:39:32 AM)

I was afraid

Rumtiger -> RE: ear infection (2/16/2007 8:41:11 AM)

So am I, go figure.

sensualmagirl -> RE: ear infection (2/16/2007 8:45:48 AM)

was entirely too early to ask about your toenails... lol... go ahead, share, I've shared today about my ear/sinus infections, bronchitis, hemmorrhoids, poly sex life, and it's not even noon... go ahead [;)]

Rumtiger -> RE: ear infection (2/16/2007 9:17:37 AM)

Well I'm Glad you Asked!!! (been waiting to say that for a couple hours now)

I first learned this when i got my first ingrown toenail that managed to get infected back when I was thinking I was going to go right into the airforce straight outta HS and was training like crazy, was turning all sorta colors, looked like it was necrosing, turned green and shit, and I dident know much else what to do, so I decided to go and ask my uncle Charlie.

Uncle Charlie was in the 75th, Rangers I mean, and I remember from casual look sees around and from what I could gather that foot problems happened plenty of times with the rangers, and besides all that I knew Uncle Charlie had some basic medical training, thats what he told me anyway.

Keep in mind I'm about 16-17 at the time.

So come to Uncle Charlie with the problem, and ask him what did rangers do.

"oh we just yank them out"
"what?"
"yeah, get a good hold of the nail, and pull it out, then scrub with hydrogen peroxide"
"fuck that"
"it'll grow back David"
"fuck that"
"well its that or you'll have to wait for a while to heal on it's own, or if you keep messing with it, it'll just get worse and then it really will have to get yanked"
"i'll stick to epson salts"

And thats where I first heard the term "bathroom surgery"

So there you go, the commen fixes to problems like ingrown infected toenails for me was to just yank the whole motherfucker out.
And to handle handle an ear infection, just puncture the damn thing and let the shit drain.

couple that with my dietary habits...yep, i'm gonna make a great father someday.

sensualmagirl -> RE: ear infection (2/16/2007 9:20:02 AM)

yikes... ummm... I don't know what to say... I'm a wimp... lol

Rumtiger -> RE: ear infection (2/16/2007 9:21:03 AM)

By the way, yes its teh same uncle Charlie who did me a favor in my rascist deli story.

Another quick cure I learned was how to deal with your eye swelling shut.

If anybody's seen rocky or apocalypto then you know what i'm talking about.

I think it is my DR. A mother/father team. Called him on his cell. Mentioned medicareisnt going to pay for endles testing, he said sure they will.

Your story is alot like mine. I never got them as a child. Now I get them. When one is sick one doesnt wish to set in a waiting room for 2+ hours- then jump thru test hoops- not when this is the 4th time of the same ailment!

Anyhow I fell asleep. Missed that appointment.

I wish my accupupuncurist was nearby.

anitbitics 17 yrs old. would they work?

sensualmagirl -> RE: ear infection (2/16/2007 11:55:02 AM)

17-year old Antibiotics? I think you're supposed to

1) finish them at the time you get the prescribed ;
or, at the very least...
2) throw them away after a year.

IMHO, Your doctor sounds like they want to take your insurance company for a ride... I honestly don't know what tests they'd give you other than look in your ears and down your throat, which they need to do, I don't know any doctor who will give out antibiotics over the phone, but as far as tests, I'm at a loss.. I've had a few ear infections in the last few years, and that's the most "test" they ever gave me.
