I was doing some freelance work (after hours) and thought I'd taken every possible precaution. Got a Yahoo e-mail account, bought a laptop to use at home so I wasn't on office equipment, got DSL at home. They still found out. Luckily, I got off with a scolding, but it was unnerving.

I have access to 2 desktops computers and the use of a laptop computer which I can take home if I like.
I do not go to any site that could/would put me in a compromising position.
In fact, we have  to sign an agreement at the beginning of every year stating  we understand the policies and
terms as far as using the computers.  I would not even log on to collarme at home on the work issued laptop.
Again, it is hardly worth it.  If I ever get into trouble at work, it won't be over an issue like this!

Uh, just to further induce paranoia:  The bulk of my clients are typical of those small, clueless businesses that don't have full time IT staff:  Physicians.  They wouldn't have a clue if their staff were brokering nigerian slaves on ebay, EXCEPT for the recent adoption of the HIPAA privacy and security regulations* which require network security.  So as these small businesses are switching to Electronic Medical Record systems, they are putting in sophisticated software which monitors network activity, and as a "side benefit" gives the boss easy to understand charts of network usage.  I probably get 3 calls a month about firing employees using the 'net for improper purposes at work.  That's up from 3 calls a year, two years ago.

Thanks we all know the risks, why take them? Now I am working on going into business for myself in a few years,
then I can log onto this site whenever I want, but guess what? I will have far less free time!
LOL

If you can't afford to be out here, don't be out here, simple as that.

Write these words down and memorize them:

I was looking for a job when I found this one, so kiss this motherfucker, here.

I do hope "Master" hasn't ordered anyone to IM them or log into CM, no matter what the consequences.

And I would say, if you do need to IM during the day, get a Blackberry :)  Or, another thought just occurred to me, get one of those cell phones with internet access and use it, not the company system.

We would have found you when you jacked in. The switch knows what equipment belongs on what port, and you would have gotten a "Visitor? Please see the receptionist for a registration key." screen.

when i used to work for IBM at the Sears corporate headquarters, we discovered some of the Sears employees were getting tech savvy with their encrypted programs to view sites deemed off limits. a few did get fired for viewing porn and/or logging over 600hrs on the Home Shopping Network while on company time.  it was fun catching employees trying to bury links or thinking delete them we wouldn't be able to follow their net trail.

I know it could be tempting, but think of not being able to log on as a break!
I often log on as soon as I get home.

Interesting association again, I worked their discover card crapola as a vendor in the 80's, do you remember a bigwig in that division by the name of Peter?  Can't remember his last name, head of acquisition for Discover Card--- he was a piece of work.

i was there 97 to 99 helping out with their NT Rollout. what a frickin' pain in the arse that project was. this is where we ran into problems with missing computers, computers in the wrong department or workstations, users hiding porn in so many folders within folders etc. i had to visually inspect ALL the computers in that complex and find missing computers. all this plus training, documenting and testing IBM's latest DPU dBase program.

Most companies have policies in place when it comes to surfing on company time.

IMO if you're worried about being busted while at work, don't visit CM or use IM.
Is it really worth losing your job over a chat? Use wireless while on your lunch break.

Listen up, and listen good.

Every page a computer has every landed on is in the CPU.  If you need your job, follow company policy to the T.  BTW, I have a "buddy", in IT.  ISPs turn over tons of logs to the govt. He cant go into details.

I am as serious as a heart attack. If you need you job to have a roof and food, DONT!

One day you will thank me for this post.

I also do not advise any hacking what-so-ever.

Got it?

Re-read this- you did not hear me.

Step 1:  Become the network security administrator

Step 2:  Browse CM freely

Step 3:  Edit the DNS logs.

Worked for me...

In our case, we have WebSense, which logs any site hit by any computer.  Some sites are blocked, some are not.  CM's main page is blocked and the forums are not....however...the forums come up as 'legal liability" hits in its classification.  I know this because one morning I was reading the forums and I get a call...."You're name is coming up all over my screen....what is CollarMe?"

Three people in our company have screens on their desks which show real time activity going on with the network.  Because of the RSS feed on the forums, each revolving post is a hit.  Lots of hits in very short order.  It was my first and last day at CM from work.
