i'm not really sure where on the boards to ask this, so feel free to move it.

Master is wanting to learn how to do suspension and more intracate rope play, but neither us are very sure about how to go about it.
What kind of rope is best?
How much should W/we get?
Whats the best way to tie it?
etc etc etc

If there's already links on the topic, that would be helpful. Anything would be helpful really. i'm very ignorant on the topic and would love the education any of Y/you could give.

Thank Y/you A/all very much!

Midear Kitten-

you might want to consider something easier that suspension to start with- perhaps single tails, suturing or crucifiction.

Rope bondage is actually one of the riskier things that you can do, even without bringing suspension into it. A poorly place bight or a knot made up wrong, can cause permenant nerve, joint, or soft tissue damage.

I make my living tying knots and working with rope (I am a yacht rigger), and it is tricky stuff. The first thing you need is a pair of EMT Sissors like these (click on the word 'EMT Sissors'). Then you can think ROPE (I don't Work for Rainbow ropes, but I know them rather weel, they are a good source). I'd actually, for learning, just buy some 6-8mm (1/4- 5/16 inch) rope from homedepot, and cut it to length.

For some starter lengths, buy 100 feet, cut it to two 50 ft sections, cut one of those into two 25 ft, and halve one of those. For the knots, look around the you guessed it, rainbow ropes site- there are some nice tutourials on it, but I can't find them just now.

Good luck

Lawrence

"The Art of Japanese ROpe Bondage" by Midori is quite a good book to learn some different techniques from. It has a detailed explanation as well as drawings on how to achieve and tie the knots. There are a couple of suspension ones in this, as well as hogties, and many others.

EMT scissors = good. 1/4" rope for suspension = not so good. For one thing, it's stretchy, so even if you're within a safe load range, it's awkward and scary for suspension. Not impossible, but not where I'd start out. Remember that a person is a 'live load' and therefore multiply their weight by a safety factor when calculating safe loads. 4x or 5x at least, considerably more if the suspendee is active at all- swinging, struggling, flogging, sex.
An important issue in suspension is load distribution- any single strand of rope can cut in quite quickly if it's holding a sizable fraction of a person's body weight, becoming not just uncomfortable but possibly dangerous. Safer to use cuffs or straps for the actual human-attachment points until you're familiar with what you're doing. Always make sure that you use static, not running, knots- running knots will tighten when loaded. Taking several turns around a limb, if properly done, can distribute load more safely. Improperly done, it can create a pressure zone that can cause all kinds of damage.
The above are safety points for your consideration, they are not instructions. Proceed at your own risk.

Definitely get yourselves one or more of the books already mentioned. For rope bondage, most any rope that feels good against the skin will do. But as you get into suspension, things like diameter, knot holding ability, and stretch become a lot more important.

Suspension bondage is rather tricky and when it goes bad, it can be very drastic. It's definitely not for beginners. Your best bet is to start with bondages that don't include suspension. Get really good with the basic ties, then learn some of the more tricky ties.

Expect to have bondages go bad to the point of cutting your ropes. Remember that ropes are disposable. Use extreme caution when running rope across the back of the neck, and never run rope across the front of the neck.

It's possible to do severe nerve damage very quickly with ropes. You'll want to learn about pressure and pulse points.

When you are very comfortable with rope bondage, do some partial suspensions before going all the way. This will probably be the point at which you want to get very serious about your ropes. When you're just getting into suspension, large braided ropes with the core removed can be very forgiving. Once you're completely confident with them, you might be ready to try hemp rope. Start with 8 mm hemp for suspension. 4 and 6 mm are fun. But not really well suited for load bearing.

Suspension bondage can be a blast, and yes, you can learn to do it. But the learning curve is very steep, and fuckups can be fatal. It's well worth taking the time to learn to do it safely. If you can find somebody who has a track record of doing it safely, your best bet is to learn from them.

I agree with TopCat in the main and in the whole. Now murphy's law says (at its base) that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. if you sharp bight a rope it will lose strength by 50%. Thats cute if you got an eel that wants out. Lying on a bed it is funny. In the air in an uncompromising position it is plain deadly. However; life is fraught with danger is it not? So, do learn a little as you go. Don't have to kill ALL the bastards in one fell swoop. The book by Midori is great. I can show you alot of sites to get your mind going if you want. You can do alot of damage with an overhand, larkspur and square not. As Lawrence(TopCat) said http://www.rainbowropes.com is gnarley. Being an old boyscout the thing that is called a turtle harness in shibari is a cargo net to me in life. If you are not interested in killing your partner........

look at ebay or amazon or barnes or what TopCat? for a reasonably non-technical (but technical book on rigging) You can easily work your partner for that "Oh, Honey I am gonna lift you up, get ready"

Consider the following scenario............

You are both naked, and you tie the bitch up; suspended from the ceiling after all the rigging books have been read, got your trusty EMT scissors out there, you got eyebolts that God couldn't move and all that crap. You have considered a margin of safety (say 50%) of the hanging weight.

Then like the clever fuck you are, you think to yourself..........Ja, but the old lady is an eel, weight on the order of 150# and can torque and twist in ecstasy to the tune of about another half.

Right now you're stylin'.......... It's just like they say in the beer commercials................
"It don't get no better than this"

You stub your toe, get a pulmonary embolism, and you drop dead of a heart attack.............
(Guarentee at that point she don't give a fuck you're dead.......She's thinking you ROTTEN BASTARD.............) Nobody hears from you. WTF, you're all done........nobody hears from you; Couple days later the church group comes around with the fuzz, cause they are worried.

When you are comfortable she can find a way out of that situation........

BY ALL MEANS STRING HER UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What do you want carved on your gravestone?

Mirthfully,
Ron
