i think the whole smart ass thing really depends on intent. Is it ment for disrespect, is it some one getting carried away, some one venting inappropriately, some one being silly, ect. With us, its a major factor in how Master responds.

That's exactly what my owner does...he quirks a brow, and gives me The Look: "What?"
Reading some of these others suggestions, I guess that might seem lenient to some, but believe me.... it works. In spades.
I think my owner and I have an advantage in that we have a 3 year vanilla history behind us as well. At this point.. I know damn well when to tease, and when to let him know I'm feeling out-of-sorts, etc. He also can read my non-verbal body-language very well. If I speak out of turn because of some outside factor ( fight with my mom, bad day with the kids, etc), he's more likely to get to the root of the problem then to react with anger.
