JerseyKrissi72 -> Quick Medical Advice (2/17/2007 8:19:01 PM)

I know no advice is the same as seeing my doctor but my doctor appt isn't til next week so I thought I would ask and see if anyone has a clue...I had an abscess removed from a very tender part of my body recently (my backside, don't laugh) and now I think I have another, in the same general location...I am wondering what could cause this? It really scares me because the doctors believe this is what killed my late Master, lack of medical attention from an abscess somewhere in his body and he had the similar bumps but in a diff'rent location...they are like boils and they hurt very badly...they removed the last one and put me on antibiotics but should they have done blood work?? I will have this all figured out next week I hope, just exhausted because it seems like one thing gets fixed another breaks....story of getting old I suppose[&:]

BlkTallFullfig -> RE: Quick Medical Advice (2/17/2007 8:57:06 PM)

Didn't your late master die of complications from a much more serious condition than boils, or am I confused?
I'm sorry I don't know what causes them other than maybe an infection that localizes and grows.    M

JerseyKrissi72 -> RE: Quick Medical Advice (2/17/2007 9:04:40 PM)

Doctors had me so confused when he died..first it was strep then it was a staph infection then when he died they just said it was "septic shock" so i wonder if anyone really knew what it was that he truly died from...To this day, I truly have no clue what took his life except for the fact that he went into shock.[&:]

RobertCloud -> RE: Quick Medical Advice (2/17/2007 9:10:25 PM)

Krissi, it is possible that your Master had those in that order.
Strep is a throat infection usually but this can lead to a more serious infection called staph.

Septic infection is an even more serious infection yet that can come from a staph infection and cause the body to go into shock. Yet, it is unlikely that an abscess, unless it was an abscess in the throat was the cause of his death.

BlkTallFullfig -> RE: Quick Medical Advice (2/17/2007 9:29:06 PM)

I think I read into a former post, so am sorry.
Yes sepsis can kill a person fairly quickly if the cause ins't discovered and treated effectively.
Hopefully yours is just simple skin irritations which attracted bacteria and got worse, and they can cut it (they can also culture the drainage) out and maybe put you on a little antibiotic for a few days.    M

JerseyKrissi72 -> RE: Quick Medical Advice (2/17/2007 9:30:58 PM)

With the last abscess I had they had to cut it and drain it and thankfully it wasn't too infected and put me on Bactrim which I'm use to taking for urinary tract infections...I have become immune to Bactrim for urinary tract infections because I have taken it so much that I now take Cipro for that...it's pretty bad when you know all the medications by heart...geesh...I'm proud to say though, I haven't had a urinary tract infection since April 2006, going on almost a year[:)]

sweetnurseBBW -> RE: Quick Medical Advice (2/17/2007 9:31:25 PM)

Septic emboli can flick off from the source and cause "boil" like areas in different parts of the body. Septic shock is very deadly and can happen very quickly.  Are your blood sugars well controlled? Chronic high blood sugar can cause numerous urinary tract infections. If antibiotics are overprescribed then resistant bacteria can thrive. Abcesses can cause valvular vegetation in the heart. So be careful with those and get follow care from your doc. Good luck.

BlkTallFullfig -> RE: Quick Medical Advice (2/17/2007 9:33:44 PM)

Are you eating well, taking vitamins, and drinking lots of water?   Do, if you haven't been.   Are you washing with lots of scented things?    If you are, don't!   Wash only with white or no soap.
You shouldn't be getting infections all the time.   Good luck,   M

JerseyKrissi72 -> RE: Quick Medical Advice (2/17/2007 9:38:56 PM)

I have been using this chocolate mint body wash i got from bath and body works..not gonna use that anymore..and been using a lotion w/ glitter in it...enough of that..back to dove soap

JerseyKrissi72 -> RE: Quick Medical Advice (2/18/2007 4:33:09 AM)

windchymes -> RE: Quick Medical Advice (2/18/2007 5:32:18 AM)

Krissy, "septic shock" means that bacteria got into his bloodstream.  They multiply, die, and also give off waste that is called "endotoxins", which is really simple terms is bacteria poop.  When these toxins that the bacteria gave off build up in the blood stream, the body cannot get rid of it all quickly enough, so the kidneys and liver become overloaded and can shut down, which causes death.  Jim Henson (the muppet guy) died from it, I believe his was caused by a strain of strep.

Staph is a very common cause of boils.  We all have staph (along with millions of other bacteria) swarming all over our bodies at all times.  Gross, but we usually don't notice it.  If one bacterium (or bug) manages to get under the skin, it sets up house and multiplies like crazy.  The pus in a boil is actually the white blood cells that your body has sent to try to eat up (think PacMan) the bacteria, but the bacteria multiplies much faster than the body can send white blood cells.  So, bacteria keep on multiplying, and the body keeps sending wbc's, it accumulates under the skin, and you have a boil.

You don't necessarily need blood work per se, unless you suddenly develop a high fever, in which case the doc should order blood cultures to be drawn.  That will actually show if you do have bacteria growing in your bloodstream.  They should, however ,do what is called a "culture and sensitivity" on the pus from the boil, especially the new one.  The "culture" grows the actual bacteria on a plate so that it can be identified....there are many strains of staph and strep, so this way, they can tell exactly which one is growing.  There is a chance that it's not staph or strep at all, but another bug called "pseudomonas", which frequently causes skin infections.  Then, when they have identified the bug, they test it, the bug itself, with many different antibiotics to figure out which antibiotic will do the best job at killing that bug.  It also tells them if any antibiotics have no effect at all on it, i.e., if that bacteria is "resistant" to a particular antibiotic.  It sounds like you might be immune or resistant to the antibiotic you took for the first boil, and you might benefit from another stronger one.

You say you sweat a lot.  Bacteria thrive in warm moist areas.  It definitely might be making you more susceptible to skin infections.  Maybe an extra shower or two a day might help?  (I'm NOT suggesting you're not clean!  It would just help wash away sweat and bacteria that decided it was happy and started to hyper-multiply!)

I see you live in Mount Holly.  The hospital systems are pretty good up that way, but if you don't get good treatment or answers, don't be afraid to cross the river and be seen by UPenn, or Jefferson. :)  Also, even though you have an appointment next week, if you start to run a high fever, get to an emergency room right away so they can check it out and start treatment right away.

Most of Bath and Body Works products have fragrance and other things in them that can irritate the skin in some people... but the CO Bigelow line that they carry does not. The lemon body wash and body cream are some of my favorite products. It might be a consideration if you don't want to go back to plain soap.
Edited to add: If you go in and ask for a sample of each they should dram it for you.

JerseyKrissi72 -> RE: Quick Medical Advice (2/19/2007 10:33:39 PM)

I just got home tonite from the hospital with a high fever and another boil that they needed to cut and remove..it was twice the size. I didn't take all my antibiotics last time so they think  that is why i got another..I am in so much pain..it's like someone hit me with a baseball bat in my ass....I need a hug[:(]

FukinTroll -> RE: Quick Medical Advice (2/19/2007 11:55:44 PM)

Aw Krissi [X(] [:(] I've had boils and I'm sorry you're going through this. Make sure you finish your course of antibiotics young lady! I recommend too doing some research on causes and prevention. Most of mine I managed by bringing them to erm.. completion with hot hot hot compresses. Ew yes but I got to avoid the hospital lol.
Hugs Hugs to you.
Oh, yes please stay away from glittery body soap & make sure that you use pure cleansers instead.

JerseyKrissi72 -> RE: Quick Medical Advice (2/20/2007 3:22:33 AM)

my fever has broken and i'm 98.4 this morning which is a good temperature even though I normally run 97.4 --the slightest fever will have me sweating..they took a sample of the stuff inside the boil and will let me know soon if it's necessary to change medications and exactly what is causing it..other than that, I feel fine- a little exhausted, but fine...

nyrisa -> RE: Quick Medical Advice (2/20/2007 8:20:15 AM)

Krissi, in addition to the advice already given, it would be a good idea to wear cotton panties, as this allows better air circulation than synthetics. And if you don't normally wear panties at all, or just wear thongs, you might consider wearing cotton panties for a few weeks, to keep friction from your clothing from rubbing your skin. Make sure you wear loose fitting clothing, too.

Lying on your tummy with your bottom exposed to the air several times a day would be beneficial. Also, I would advise against shaving for a few weeks. Shaving is a common cause of skin infections, and even if this is not an area where you shave, you don't want freshly shaved/irritated skin in surrounding areas, either.

JerseyKrissi72 -> RE: Quick Medical Advice (2/20/2007 11:19:32 AM)

Thankyou for the advice. I do shave every 3 days to keep my kitten nice and smooth...for now on..i'm only gonna shave when I am ready for sex[8D]

JerseyKrissi72 -> RE: Quick Medical Advice (2/25/2007 9:50:46 PM)

          I found out today what was causing the boils. I had an antibiotic resistant form of staph in my body probably caused from when I had a horrible rash as a result of my diabetes and it found a way into my blood stream. Fortunately for me, the antibiotic given to me was one that is used to treat it...I always thought antibiotic resistent meant there was no cure, but in reality it just means it doesnt respond to typical treatments. Atleast now I know what I am dealing with...This hospital was very thorough and I'm thankful for that because when I had pelvic pain they did an ultrasound and the cyst I once had on my only ovary is gone- not pregnant (duh) and all bacteria tests came back negative..for once, my life is improving health wise...I am back on my anti-depressants and all around me are happy about that![sm=biggrin.gif][sm=biggrin.gif]
