Fwiw, the major memorials here in DC largely honor white men. The closet any other group gets to prime time is as part of the Korean or Vietnam memorials. And there's a statue of Eleanor Roosevelt at the FDR Memorial. Rest assured, blu, there's no lack of attention paid to white men.

No you mean a person invented it? If we are gonna start talking about colour then i think we all know the winner here dont we. I dont give a crap if people wanna celebrate their colour i mean its natural but why is it only certain people can and others are prohibited now THAT is racism!

Incidently, from where I sit- woman are still 2nd class citizens in the USA.  The equal rights amendment for woman should have passed!

If the world had no woman-  we would revert to caveman ways.  Swords- might- woman bring much to the table.

All the bad azzes in the world.  All the gentleman - the gentlemen are so- as a result of woman.

Sorry- but it is the 2007 reality.

You mean Benjamin Banneker, I trust. Don't know much about him, but I've read that he was involved with the first survey, though he didn't do it singlehandedly. There are plans to build a Banneker memorial here in town.

I understand what you are saying and you wanna know what i think (probably not) over here in the UK we have 2 kinds of blacks (im calling them black cos they seem to celebrate being called it and not just be treated as a 'person') we have West Indians and we have Africans (from Africa not 2nd or 3rd generation) and what i find hilarious is they began fighting amongst themselves PROVING its not about colour atall its what ive always said its a culture thing! Those who label it 'black history' are pig fucking ignorant, they are not being sensitive to certain areas of African and or West Indian culture also they dont call it African month possibly to exclude the white South Africans, dont you think thats deicrimination in itself? Its hilarious to one minute listen to someone over here saying 'you are not treating that person over their the same COS hes black!' and then hearing a black man call another black man a fucking nigger and truly mean it! and see a black guy hurl racial insults at Asians, ALL the narrow minded people fight others its not exclusive to 'white skinheads' and those who think that really ought to be classified as ignorant narrow minded biggots, its makes me incandescent with fucking rage cos someof the best mates ive had ever are West Indian, Asian, Greek, African, Irish etc and im proud that they are proud to be who they are and they accept i am insanely proud to be an Englishman. To call it 'black history' month simply demeans it and is offensive to those of us who have been 'oppressed' by the left wing race witch hunters! You talk about the treble k im telling you something, the more you shove colour in their face the worse the hatred will get! peace!

A survey crew usually has 4 men...two chainmen a pole man and an instrument man.  The LS on the job would have been maj. Ellicott who may or may not have had a daily presence in the field.  Banneker was the instrument man and as such would have been the senior member of the team.  When the field survey was done Banneker went home and left the transcription work to the drafting team.

There was a pretty good lecture on "Tony Brown's Journal" on pbs so it should be available and there was a book that they intervied the author about on the same program so if you go to pbs I am sure you could find it.

4u2spoil -> RE: black history month (2/19/2007 9:30:03 PM)

Opinions are like assholes right? Everyone's entitled. As far as labels go, I tried to explain in my previous post why Black History Month is what it is in the US as opposed to Kenyan History Month, Ghaniain History Month, etc. Plus, you kind of shed light witht he South African thing. The experience of a white African-American (using the strict definition of someone of African descent now living in the US) person would still probably be different from a black African-American person. Labeling it black history doesn't makeit ignorant, especially because I know that generally if people can claim their culture that's the first thing they go with (i.e. they'll say they're of Jamaican descent, or Nigerian or Ethiopian before they say they're black)

I think I said before that every race has racists. The root is the same: ignorance, intimidation and insecurity. That goes for a black person who stereotypes and insults Africans or other black people, or a Chinese person who insults Japanese people, etc. It all generally comes from people who dislike something about themselves so much that they feel a need to stereotype and express negativity about a certain group.

Black history month (in the US) started off as a week, and it wasn't coming from a place of putting down other groups so that black people in the US could feel better about themselves. It was started to encourage black children to feel good about the accomplishments a similar group of people made, in an environment where those accomplishments were rarely discussed or brought up, and the underlying message was that black people had nothing to celebrate or be proud of. It wasn't about shoving color in anyones face, it was an effort to stop sweeping it under the rug and there's a difference.

ok...so heres my next question.....i have a tshirt shop in my basement and a friend of mine ( whom i have known for a very long time and has never done anything racist) asked me to make him a shirt with  " white pride world wide" and a celtic cross on it. he and a black friend who was wearinga shirt bought at a store with "black pride" printed on it and my friend was asked over and over again to explain himself as to why he was wearing such a shirt, whereas only two people even noticed the other shirt.

why is it not ok to show pride in whatever your race, why does it have to draw dirty looks and questions of intention?

I have always been curious as to how someone could be proud of something over which they had no control.
I am proud of those things that I have accomplished.  My modest language skills or my mechanical expertese are things that I have studied and acquired some modest level of profeciency.    But I find it difficult to be proud of having blue eyes or two arms or the particular hue of my skin since I had no control over those particular atributes.

Golly, I had no idea.

It'd be great to have a month of *history focus* on all the different cultures that reside in the UK.

agirl

The BBC recently ran a series of programmes about the black community's impact on British culture. It was shown on BBC 4. We have programmes on BB2 about Pakistani, Indian and Bangledeshi culture regularly.

Not a month, but I think the reason is that we have these programmes regularly, hence no reason to have a special month.

There's no room for another British white male wankfest. It's saturated.

Have you missed the endless television about the empire and back in the day with the Royal Navy etc. This stuff is on our television all the time and if you happen to miss this I'm sure you can pick up any one of the mail, the sun, the express, the times and you will get a daily fix.

Celebration of British white culture is all around us, I'm not sure how you're missing it......shame they're celebrating imperialism.

proudsub -> RE: black history month (2/20/2007 2:40:46 PM)

I'm not black but my father was captain of the first navy ship in WWII to have an all black crew.  They did some very heroic deeds during the war and a book, documanetary (Proudly We Served) and movie (Proud) have been made from that story.  It took 50 years for these men to be honored with letters of commendation from the Navy (which my father had submitted in 1946) and they were presented at a ceremony in D.C. that I attended during Black History Month.  Other blacks who served in WWII were also honored at the ceremony.  I'm not sure it would of happened if it weren't for Black History Month, so I think it's a good thing.  If anyone has any interest in this subject here are a few websites:

I have noticed in the past oh say decade, decade and a half or so it is becoming increasingly ok to be a racist, so long as you are a minority.

Call me a cracker no one blinks, I call a black person a *beep* and I am johnny crow looking to lynch someone.

Black history month is a complete and total sham and I refuse to acknowledge it anymore then I have to.  All great people deserve recognition from George Washington to MLK.  I have no problem setting aside a day for a specific person, but a whole month to a race?  Hell no.  Same with black magazines, TV stations, etc.  Have Ivory magazine instead of Ebony, WET instead of BET, White only college funds, White history month.  Yeah who here thinks the owners of such would make it a day before someone is on CNN and MSNBC calling them a racist?  It is hypocrisy.

Am I a racist?  No.  Would I like white only stuff?  No can't personally say I would but I feel if someone wants to start one they should be free to, just as a minority is.  But when one group is allowed to and another isn't?  That my friends is racism, doesn't matter your race.

mnottertail -> RE: black history month (2/20/2007 5:11:38 PM)

OK, I'll say it, NIGGER.

It's just like you crackers to give a black man the shortest month you got to give, and bitch about it anyway.

I have serious reservations that black folk (or even spanish folk) talk about you behind your back....nor do they plot in dark corners to get Jessie Jackson made president just sos they can make all you white people slaves.

Look, half or better of you don't know one goddamn person in history that is black, or of color, Cortez got some molten gold dumped down his throat by some esipic asai and thats where it quits. Now this ain't an uprising, but think about it guys, it is all rather reasonable, most of you try trace your history to the old country---  Oh, I was the son of the fathers son to the personal whore of King Charles the 3rd or some such shit---

It is no wonder that people want a frame of reference in the world, and I think that really:

Black folk wanna drive a nice car just like you do
Black folk wanna go get drunk ever once and a whole time and tear it up like you do
Black folk wanna have a cottage at the lake like you do
Black folk wanna have it better for their kids than you do

I could go on and on---

So who is your hero?  Who do you stand up with and say, if I could claim a bit of life it would have something in common with this motherfucker?

George WAshington?
Chas DeGaulle?
Patrick Henry?
Lord Admiral Nelson?
Sitting Bull?
Hannibal?
Alexander the Great?
Confucious?
Abraham Lincoln?

Your Mom?

Crispus Attucks?

I think evybody in this thread takes t-shirts way too serious

People, have some sense of  what they were, are and will be, it is a curse that everybody has only 40-100 years of glory on this earth and it is wide enough that we can all take a breath of it at once.

Rick James
