Opinions are like assholes right? Everyone's entitled. As far as labels go, I tried to explain in my previous post why Black History Month is what it is in the US as opposed to Kenyan History Month, Ghaniain History Month, etc. Plus, you kind of shed light witht he South African thing. The experience of a white African-American (using the strict definition of someone of African descent now living in the US) person would still probably be different from a black African-American person. Labeling it black history doesn't makeit ignorant, especially because I know that generally if people can claim their culture that's the first thing they go with (i.e. they'll say they're of Jamaican descent, or Nigerian or Ethiopian before they say they're black) I think I said before that every race has racists. The root is the same: ignorance, intimidation and insecurity. That goes for a black person who stereotypes and insults Africans or other black people, or a Chinese person who insults Japanese people, etc. It all generally comes from people who dislike something about themselves so much that they feel a need to stereotype and express negativity about a certain group. Black history month (in the US) started off as a week, and it wasn't coming from a place of putting down other groups so that black people in the US could feel better about themselves. It was started to encourage black children to feel good about the accomplishments a similar group of people made, in an environment where those accomplishments were rarely discussed or brought up, and the underlying message was that black people had nothing to celebrate or be proud of. It wasn't about shoving color in anyones face, it was an effort to stop sweeping it under the rug and there's a difference. quote:
ORIGINAL: bludemonn I understand what you are saying and you wanna know what i think (probably not) over here in the UK we have 2 kinds of blacks (im calling them black cos they seem to celebrate being called it and not just be treated as a 'person') we have West Indians and we have Africans (from Africa not 2nd or 3rd generation) and what i find hilarious is they began fighting amongst themselves PROVING its not about colour atall its what ive always said its a culture thing! Those who label it 'black history' are pig fucking ignorant, they are not being sensitive to certain areas of African and or West Indian culture also they dont call it African month possibly to exclude the white South Africans, dont you think thats deicrimination in itself? Its hilarious to one minute listen to someone over here saying 'you are not treating that person over their the same COS hes black!' and then hearing a black man call another black man a fucking nigger and truly mean it! and see a black guy hurl racial insults at Asians, ALL the narrow minded people fight others its not exclusive to 'white skinheads' and those who think that really ought to be classified as ignorant narrow minded biggots, its makes me incandescent with fucking rage cos someof the best mates ive had ever are West Indian, Asian, Greek, African, Irish etc and im proud that they are proud to be who they are and they accept i am insanely proud to be an Englishman. To call it 'black history' month simply demeans it and is offensive to those of us who have been 'oppressed' by the left wing race witch hunters! You talk about the treble k im telling you something, the more you shove colour in their face the worse the hatred will get! peace!
