I know there is manufacturers for cages with all kinds of links on here, but what i was wondering is if anyone commissioned a local welder to put one together, or did one themselves.  If so, what was the cost.  My Mistress would like one, but $1000 or so is pretty pricey for a bunch of steel welded together.

Well as a welder. I can say it just depends on what you want it made out of. materials are not always cheap especially for decently graded steel.

I plan to build my own one day. something that folds up.

on the cheap though, building something out of thin steel stock would only require maybe an hour of cutting and another hour of tacking if you had a hand. I'd figure on 150 maybe for something dirt dirt cheap. Would you agree?

$1000 sounds about right. A good steel cage takes considerable work to build. I've seen some nice ones. There's one on display at Madame S in San Francisco that's beautifully made.

No, I wouldn't.  You're not even going to get the materials for under $150 and it will take far longer than an hour of cutting and another hour of welding to put it all together.

The price would definetly depend on what exactly you want. (thickness, type and grade of metal, size of cage, how you want it to work, etc) A good jobber shop will have someone that will work with you for 20 mins over the phone or in person helping to figure out roughly how long it will take. It might end up being faster (therefor cheaper since it's by the hour) than expected, or perhaps it will be over $1000 to create a copy of the cage you want - who knows!  I'd suggest calling a local job shop (look under machine shops, welders, fabricators in the phonebook) and just talking to someone for a couple minutes about what you want, find out their hourly rate aswell to give yourself a ballpark figure for the cost. Then use something like www.onlinemetals.com  to get a ballpark on metal costs (prices will ofcourse be different then the local metal supplier or perhaps the job shop that is ordering it for you as there are various expenses that go into getting you metal) . One note is that some dealers don't cut up metal for you, they only sell by the length it comes in (12 feet, 20-ish feet, 24feet, etc). You're looking for cold rolled steel if you want a smoother metal, or hot rolled steel (which is cheaper) if you want a rougher steel that would probably be what you'd expect to find in a a dungeon.

Thank you everyone for your input.  My Mistress wants a stainless cage so I figured the materials cost would be high.  I already drew out the plans and planned on cutting all the stock to length myself. I want to make each side, front, top, bottom and back seperate and the bolt the pieces together when needed.  I guess it would be cheaper to go to Sears and buy a welder and practice on scrap metal.  I had welding in high school (23 yrs ago), I wonder if I still have any skills I learned?  Plus I would have a welder to create other wonderful toys.

If you're going to try this on your own, do yourself a favor and take a welding class at your local technical or community college.  You get to ramp up your skills without having to spending a pile of money on steel and equipment and see just how much work you have in store before undertaking such a project.

depending on factors, an acceptable alternative might be to silver solder it together, I would hate to tig that much stainless (unless I was making a gob on it), and either solder or brass would be a way to go.......

But then you know alot about welding ~stef--- and since it is one of a kind and meant to last a lifetime, well--- yeah, I guess I can see that.....

Fuck!  Now I talked myself out of everything.  Chain the guy up, way easier.

i have just finished one for a pro dome here, its 3 ft x 3 ft x 6 ft, i used 1 inch square tubing with 1/2 steel bars, also i put a head and hand stock in on end and i made a sterching uint on it, it is in paint now, the materals so far is aroud 300 with out the wood for the top and padding, it took alot longer than i tought it would take to put together, i myself wouldn,t do one for less than a thousand, not like that noway, at 40 dollar ahr shop rate you would go broke real fast
