YourhandMyAss -> Could a life coach answer any of these questions. (2/20/2007 4:22:07 PM)

Would a life coach or someone of that nature be able to help someone who has no direction for life and is unsure figure out what they want to do or where to go to do it? I don't know of any jobs I'd like to do specifically but I do know it'd be helping injured animals, but not as a vet tech or nothing, I mean like going out to oil spills an cleaning them up, or housing injured ones while they learn to cope again. And I see no point in college because I don't know of anything I'd want to do for college cause what's the point if you're not going for a degree. I don't have any life skills really either, I mean today I looked at an apartment just out of curiosity, and it seems you have to have previous rental records or job record I don't have neither never having lived on own. I'm on SSI too so they probably wouldn't accept that.

I'm just not sure I see any direction or point right now, and I am confused and nobody can really tell me what's the point of college if your not going for a degree, and if you don't have a job in mind.

Please no flames if you have something nasty and rude keep itt o yourself. I know they w*on't really, but nastyness, snarkyness or flaming won't answer the question.

Without an education your chances will be slim to find a good paying job even within the animal community.
But, if you are willing to volunteer most resuces and APL's always need help, and in time you will create a network and possibly be offered a real job.

Rule -> RE: Could a life coach answer any of these questions. (2/20/2007 5:13:15 PM)

There is animal psychology. Some animals have crazy behaviour, usually due to having been messed up by humans. If you specialise on one species - dog, cat, horse - you will have a useful occupation. If you are not so inclined, you may perhaps want to specialise in animal grooming.

Perhaps mucking out the stables of an animal um farm? Or else work in a zoo?

How about just doing any job that you stumble across? Move from one to another, perhaps every month or week or day. You may find direction then, and at least a lot of experience.

if there's a community college or university near you, they're likely to have some sort of career center, advising, etc. go in and talk to them about your issues and see if they can offer some suggestions - either education avenues you can follow to get a job similar to what you're looking for, or people you can talk to and places to start if you're staunchly against pursuing college. a lot of colleges have degrees having to do with wildlife - someone i know got their degree in wildlife ecology and conservation, and the school they went to also has degrees in animal sciences and things like that. a degree in a field like that could help a lot in the type of job you are looking for. but even if you aren't, perhaps talking to career counselors can still help you figure out what path to pursue and how to start.

good luck.

I sympathise with you totally, for me its low motivation, basically i would suggest a simple method of agreeing a time in order for no distractions then getting a pen and paper, sit down and devote some time to writing down a list of 5 things you enjoy, that is step one, list next to them the reason you enjoy them, they could be activities or they could be hobbies, they could be things that grab your attention like a tv show (something interesting NOT the simpsons!) you may laugh at this but for me devoting time solely to getting things done is very difficult. Once you do the list perhaps you can do some internet or library research on each topic, i.e. how to go about it, the skills you need, etc AGAIN you HAVE to timetable these jobs and stick to them otherwise you will fall back into a state of low-motivation, keep me posted as to your achievments.

I used to think I wanted to be a foster mom, but I know now I'd resent the intrusion into my privacy that would represent, and I am not willing to take on so many kids baggage so intamently.  Having been in the system I know how fucked up those who come through are, and the ins and outs.

Bouncing from job to job wouldn't really be to good for me either, unless they were temp jobs.

I can however say that I am going to adult ed to finish highschool, and THAT is something positive that will be leading to more future possibilities. Other than that I just don't feel like I have any skills, life or other wise. I couldn't live on my own even if I wanted to, and educational wise I feel the school system failed horridly because I never took any of the classes most take, biologiy life science, math, none of it. I bounced around schools too, so it was never concrete.

hisannabell, I'm not staunchly against college I just don't see the point because I don't see what a college is going to teach someone who's not there for a degree. Why would going to college help if you're not there to get a degree, what classes would you take and what's the point.

For example, if you're not going to be a history major what's the point besides sheer personal interest of taking advanced history.

Go to some of the online job search sites as many of them have career guidance and self assessment tools to help you clarify your interests and skills.  I just found this link to an online skills audit - an australian site - http://jobseeker.cwcc.nsw.edu.au/anta/JS02p2/js02p2skillsaudit.htm This site actually has online information/classes giving info about how to research particular jobs etc.

Some of the things to think about - the hours that you want to work, family commitments, distance you are willing to travel, does it need to be accessible by public transport, realistic job ideas (eg look at current job ads and contact companies to do research about the work you are interested in doing), your hobbies/interests, training required, training you are willing to do, physical restrictions you may have.

Think about what your interests are and talk to friends and family about how this may lead to job ideas.  If you are interested in working with animals volunteer your time at an animal shelter initially.  Are there short courses nearby that are aimed at people who are either starting work for the first time or returning to work after a break? I am not sure about the services offered by the social security system there but here we offer a couple of sessions of career counselling to people on social security income as well as quite a bit of free or subsidised training.

List out all of the paid and unpaid work/study you have done and break the jobs down into particular tasks you did as part of that job. employment agencies may also give you an idea of the labour market in your area and the skills and training required to get work.

Sorry that I haven't put these ideas into any particular order.

all the best.

Thta is a goid site reference, above. The community college in my town also offered an interest ineventory test (with about an hour's worth of multiple choice type questions) to determine which careers someone would prefer and-or be best suited for. I took one many years ago, and it said I should be in charge of a financial aid office at a college. I didn't end up doing that, but still, it was nice to have something pin-pointed out to me.

That wasn't the only option the results listed, either - I ended up with, like, 6 options listed.

Currently, I think I might want to go to school to be a professional chef. But that is something that took me half my life to conclude. I don't think it's unusual for many adults to have several careers, or career ideas that are vastly different from eachtoher - or to take awhile to figure out what one really wants to do as far as a career is concerned. Some people are in professions they may not really enjoy, and are waiting until they semi-retire to pursue their "dream job." Take advantage of the fact you have your options open!

Looking at what you like to do as far as hobbies go, might indeed be another way to help you decide. Good luck.

- Susan

IMO... seeking a magic pill cure when you don't even know what ails you is a recipe for failure.

From where does your lack of direction/motivation originate? If you're not sure, take your best guess.

dcnovice -> RE: Could a life coach answer any of these questions. (2/20/2007 9:54:02 PM)

If you have the money, a skilled life or career coach could probably help you identify what you'd like to do and develop stategies for doing it. If money is tight, you might want to look in your public library for careeer-guidance books such as the classic What Color Is Your Parachute?

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Could a life coach answer any of these questions. (2/20/2007 10:03:10 PM)

I've tried the whole volunteer thing, didn't work out, the SPCA people said to come to an orentation, I did, they said come in such and such day, I did, I worked hard was apropriate all that,  gave them ZEROE reason to not considerme a good worker, and I never heard from them ever again, and I called a bunch of times, and I went in in person talked to the volunteer lady, and she never called. Really burns my ass cause they boohoo wah wah about no volunteers and the poor animals an they shit on their volunteers.

I don't know what kind of programs are around here, I called pride, but that didn't pan out, I'm on SSI and working is tightly controlled, I want to work part time, at least. I know that there's sign waving jobs, and survey takers, and those kind of things, you just have to catch them when they're in the paper.

I worked for cut co, I was a sales rep and I worked for K designers for a week before they showed how flakey they were. I  went through training that was it. That's it lol two jobs, one I didn't even do anything just got trained.

Volunteer I worked 2 weeks at an after school program and I went to the spca 2 times before they wouldn't call me back.

I have thought maybe dog training would be neat, it could be something you could choose to do ocasionally as a supliment, or full time. and I  could obediance train any injured animal I might have in my care.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Could a life coach answer any of these questions. (2/20/2007 10:34:48 PM)

I'm not looking for magic pills, I know they don't exsist, just maybe some information, or direction or some sterring.

sub well I know for a fact I have no idea about jobs or careers, or what is offered, and I am pychiclaly limited in what I can do based on health stuff, so your average job like jack in the box is out, cause not only is the standing all day  not going to be something I can do I don't have the skills, MAYBE just maybe I'd qualify to mop, but I wouldnt qualify to cook or do cashier, I don't see how work is even possible on SSI since they'll take it away completely or cut me down to next to nothing, I don't make enough as it is, I know for a fact I couldn't afford to live alone work and try to keep SSI from cutting me down to next to nothing. I can't drive, even with my glassed I can't see and I feel it's irresponcible to get behind a wheel when I am so clearly deminished.

so I am probaly going to need regional transit the rest of my life or be schofured, Most jobs won't hire you unless you have reliable transport, and most don't consider bus reliable, and I have basically no life skills, those I could learn I guess and will learn.

I don't like school if I went to college  the idea of four years of more of the same shit but harder than highschool bores me to tears. I had a very hard time in highschool, and being learning disabled and nobody believeing you or making an attempt to make things understandable just soured me.

I feel worthless cause I have no skills, no friends no life, I try to make a social life and nothing I try works, clubs didn't work online don't work going to work didn't work. If i wanted to tomorow, go out and live on my own I wouldn't even be able to do that.

bludemonn -> RE: Could a life coach answer any of these questions. (2/20/2007 10:40:51 PM)

I think you do need some form of counselling (in the nicest possible way) this goes alot deeper than motivation dosent it? Trust me i get where you are coming from but you are wrong about the skills bit, all of us have a skill its just trying your hand at everything to discover it.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Could a life coach answer any of these questions. (2/20/2007 10:49:47 PM)

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Could a life coach answer any of these questions. (2/20/2007 10:57:29 PM)

how does someone get into dog grooming n more so being liscenced that sounds good

wandersalone -> RE: Could a life coach answer any of these questions. (2/20/2007 11:11:13 PM)

Once again I can only mention the services that we have in Australia and hope that you have something similar - we have employment agencies and vocational rehabilitation agencies that are funded to assist people with injuries and disabilities to obtain employment - note, this is about taking the first steps back into work, not about getting a dream job. Do a search on 'vocational rehabilitation' and see if anything comes up in your area and have a chat to them to see if you are eligible for their services.

Pet grooming - there are tech college courses in Australia and people can also get on the job experience. Ask a local pet shop if they know a dog groomer and have a chat to them - how did they first get into this type of work, what are the physical demands, can it be done part time, can you work from home, what type of equipment do you need etc.

Volunteer work can be frustrating in that agencies often get overwhelmed with people offering their assistance and not being suitable or having unrealistic expectations and as you have found out, it can be just as frustrating as someone who has volunteered their time to not get called back.  Try some other animal refuges if there are any and hopefully you wil get more joy.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Could a life coach answer any of these questions. (2/20/2007 11:34:20 PM)

most people drop their dogs off at the grroomer cause they can't or won't do it themself, so I'd be doing a big favor if I learned  how to groom and got liscenced! and it's a s/kill, I wouldn't nessisarily have to do it all the time but you could fall back on it.! Same with training.

animal pychology was a good suggestion too, cause animals can be weird after being mistreated. I am good at winning the trust of previously mistrustfull animals!

Quivver -> RE: Could a life coach answer any of these questions. (2/21/2007 2:32:52 AM)

I believe that even Dog Groomers hold a state licence.
Any way you approach things they are going to want proof you've done it to some extent.
I think you have a hard road ahead of you.  You are going to have to make some tough choices and stick with them.  All of that is going to take a desire deeper then you claim to have.  If you truly want to escape being under the control of the goverment (SSI) and live your own life I suggest challenging yourself to reach higher, take controled chances and get some counselling.  Possibly even a straight talking mentor (not the kind we speak of here on the boards) to keep pushing you along.  There are no easy answers, it has to come from within. Although life's tossed you some shitty circumstances it's up to you to get out of them.  You like Crafts .. so your creative .. use it, find a way to get ahead!

subfever -> RE: Could a life coach answer any of these questions. (2/21/2007 6:36:51 AM)

Indeed, your situation runs deeper than just having a lack of motivation and direction.

I don't know if you've seen these sites yet, but they seem pertinent:
