Aileen68 -> Learning to play darts. Help!!!!!! (2/20/2007 5:58:00 PM)

We just got a dart board for the newly finished basement.
It's a Widdy?  I think that's the brand.  I've never really played before.
Any tips?

RWAble -> RE: Learning to play darts. Help!!!!!! (2/20/2007 6:01:21 PM)

I used to play darts a long time ago. Just remember to keep the feathers un-mangled and set the board at eye-brow level; then use your balance.

Fuck...I'm very unbalanced.

If you doubt your aim have a friend stand in front of the board and describe the exact flight path they are taking.  Correct aim accordingly.

I like to close my eyes, spin around really fast 3 times and then just throw. Occassionally I like a moving target.

Hope that helps!

I'm gonna take my beer, go on down stairs and shoot a round.
We do that baseball game where you do the nine innings.  I don't know what it's called.  I'll come post my score when I'm done.

domiguy -> RE: Learning to play darts. Help!!!!!! (2/20/2007 6:12:38 PM)

There are 2 main dart games played..Cricket and 501 or 301(same game)...approach darts much like shooting free throws...

Aileen68 -> RE: Learning to play darts. Help!!!!!! (2/20/2007 6:20:33 PM)

You and Hydro made me laugh.  And so did poor domiguy.
It's a shame I can't read what he just wrote since he's on moderation.  Haha.

I just shot a 14...that really sucks, doesn't it?

Edited to add: the Haha on the end of the sentence where I talk about the fact that domiguy is on moderation.

I never played the baseball game. As far as cricket goes, I am pretty good.

How do I do it???

I am not sure. I just have a couple of shots of hard liquor, put my right foot forward, my left foot facing left,  and then just shoot.

Dont forget that to be a good Darts player you have to have a beer belly.
This is to maintain equilibrium at the point the Dart is released.

Also keep a first aid kit near by.
Dont worry, there are as as yet no fatalities  known to have occurred while playing the game.

No I am wrong, we had a Scotsman have a heart attack due to the stress of missing his winning "double"
RIP Jock !

I thought "that baseball game" was designed to get your clothing off.

1.  I play best after about 4 or 5 beers, so drink, but never get sloppy drunk.

2.  Everyone will give you advice, but do what "feels right" for you.

3.  A firm stance, with both feet remaining on the floor may be more difficult at first, but will make you a better player in the long run.

4.  Don't "lean forward" or "jump" when you throw.

5.  The more fingers you use to hold your dart will give you more and finer control as your body learns how to play.  It may also initially cause you more problems, as it is easier to over-correct and cause you to screw up a throw until you get into a rhythm.

5.  Always .... always ... put you fingers on the exact same place on each dart each time you throw - to the point where it becomes automatic, where your fingers should go on your specific set of darts.  This usually means that you should buy a pair of darts where you can figure this out.  For this reason, I don't like smooth barrel darts, but prefer ones with a knurled barrel.

6. Practice, practice, practice.  Did I mention practice?

7.  Sharp darts stick into the board better, and bounce out less.

8.  Play with different weights of darts, even buying a few sets, until you figure out your best weight.  16 or 17 gram darts are very light and are easy to over-control and bounce out of the board.  28, 30, 32 gram darts are very heavy, and require great strength and are tiring over time, but are harder to deflect, and hit with a satisfying "thunk".  I'm currently using 26 gram darts.

Light darts are good when you start, to teach you control and precision, heavy darts are good to give you power and strength.

Don't play whilst drunk you may spear your own brothers foot. [:D]

Becareful of bounce backs, also remember only your feet have to be behind the line (if your using one)..

Any pictures on it yet.???

Hello OP,

I spent my entire childhood as an archery buff and later teacher.

I have been involved on and off with gun trainers and professionals.

I used to play a lot of darts.

I have done a lot of bowling, and my average game is 230+

The trick with any accuracy sport involves being able to do the same exact thing each and every time.

Hold your breath and throw, let your breath 1/3 out and throw, exhale as you throw.  It does not matter what you do so much as always doing the same thing.

Your feet need to be in the exact same position each and every throw.

The exact arm motion with each and every throw.

Consistency is what will determine your success.

So you get this down, what will happen is your throws (shots, whatever) will group.  In other words, you will get all your throws in an area the size of a coffee can lid, or if you are awesome, a dime.  This dime will always be, for example, 5 inches to the 45 degree angle up and to the right of the bullseye.

So aim 5 inches to the 45 degree angle down and to the left of the bullseye.

This will place your dime on the bullseye.

The second issue with darts is to try all sorts of weights to see which you like the best.   Does not really matter
what size you use, but always use the same size.

Hope this helps

Didn't realise there was so much interest in Darts in the US.
How about Snooker ? Really skillfull that is. I dont mean than poncey game Pool where the table is so small and the pockets are so big its virtually impossible to miss.

Incidently I notice women are useless at Snooker and Darts. lol
If you want a real larf get the average female  to throw a ball. he he he he he

Archer -> RE: Learning to play darts. Help!!!!!! (2/21/2007 3:30:58 PM)

I was taught that you don't THROW darts you push them towards the target. It helps to keep consistancy when you think of it as a push instead of a throw.

Hint:
Focus on the smallest part of the board you can see. (former holes in the target area work best) when focus gets to the point where the rest of the board kinda blurs but the focus point is clear then throw (push) the dart.
(when learning just worry about repeating the process the same each time getting the darts to group/ stay together.
Your body will adjust the impact point without you ever even thinking about it if you keep doing the focus thing on the point you want to hit.

See these t-shirts at the school I work at.

"I hit like a woman,
I throw like a woman,
I spike the ball 90mph at your face
like a woman."
