The interesting thing is that you can actually get your news from a source other than the TV, radio, or internet.

It kind of smacks of that decline of empire thingy, when gladiators (profesional ahteletes) get paid more than senators and entertainers are celebrated for being spoiled children. Oh, and the captains of sinking ships (CEOs) get bigger rewards the more holes they drill in the hull. etc etc...

puella,
Nothing. We are getting served exactly what we are ordering. Is is a simple matter of economics. Broadcast news must generate a profit. Profit is the only motivating factor when decisions are made concerning news content or its delivery. Gossip sells, sex sells; and it is cheap to produce.

I tend to agree, after all perhaps the operative part of news is "new", and really what is new in Iraq or even elsewhere on the world stage, it doesn't take much airtime at all to say SSDD*

People are frustrated with politics and politicians. They don't have the desire, and perhaps most don't have the ability to differentiate fact from rhetoric so they avoid news of that nature. I believe most don't want to be drawn into the frustration of the war in Iraq, and don't have a clue regarding the news issues that you raise. Congress just spent four days debating a referendum on the war that had no impact; and people applauded the result.

Look at the focus of the candidates for the presidency in 2008. They are here in Hollywood soliciting handouts from the entertainment industry. Their platform will not be built upon effecting any change that isn't approved by Geffin, Spielberg, and others of their ilk.

Indeed, after all political types need the media to put them across as the good guy, even if it is not implicit in the production.

Sunday, Al Gore will get the biggest ovation when he wins the Oscar for his dramatic documentary version of the movie "Day After Tomorrow". Its entertainment. News? You have to be willing and dedicated to go get that on your own.

"Bread & Circus" provided by a media whose only goal is the bottom line.

Hi Merc....

Other than the first paragraph in your post..... I think you're on the money.

However, if the first paragraph in your post were true......why doesn't any of the mainstream news networks assemble a panel of experts and have a show that dedicates itself to alternative theories surrounding subjects such as the Oklahoma City bombing and 9 /11?

Tell me you are joking please! Having seen the qualtiy and plain misinformation (either thru' sloppy research, stupidity or even malice) handed out by some of the regular expert commentators on US networks just how credible would some of the alternatives come across? Of course let us not forget that many alternative theories about such events cherry pick evidence, quote out of context and lets be honest often live on a planet far far away and as a general rule cannot indulge in rational intelligent discussion of their policies.

George Noory and the Coast to Coast program has almost 600 radio affiliates in this country alone and is fast closing in on Limbaugh and the most listened to radio program in the world. Every time there is there is a show about 9 /11....it gets the highest ratings.

However the big TV networks are there force fed into homes around the world and nobody actually has to go looking for them or have them pointed out to them, of course pictures are far more moving and tell a much bigger story to the average joe.

I guarantee you if the networks put together some of these types of shows with a similar panel of renowned experts, it would gain them ratings /advertising dollars and supplant all types Michael Jackson / Anna Nicole Smith coverage that regularly dumbs down the public.

It would get them laughed at, it would LOSE them money as no big business would want to assosciate itself with such lunacy as 9/11 alternatives.

As a side issue, find a "renowned" expert on alternatives to 9/11, (pretty damn hard) Now find one that can hold his own in a live, unscripted debate with no blacklisted question against intelligent counter-claims. (PS if you come across the golden fleece on that quest you may find it has the answer to the cold fusion problem along with equations showing how to accomplish time travel)

Edited to add

* SSDD = Same 5h1t Different Day for those not aware of the acronym

I'm not joking one bit. And I'm not talking about these so-called expert commentators on US networks you seem to be thinking about. Just off the top of my head I could come up with a great panel.

That's your opinion. I'd love to hear you cite some examples {audio or video transcripts} that I can go back and retrieve for myself to see and listen to. I will go to the library if I have to in order to use their DSL. I've never seen an open and live debate where there's no interference.

Not a chance. Last year Peter Jennings /ABC did a special on UFO's and it had the best ratings for shows in its time slot that whole week.

But lets agree what you are saying here is true. So what does it say to the lunacy of big business supporting continuous /ongoing coverage about Anna Nicole Smith - Isn't that Pot calling the kettle black?
