RiotGirl -> The kittens (3/19/2005 9:16:53 PM)

i'm a fit to be tied and its ashame i have morals.

This little neighbor girl, who is the sister of my daughters friend, snuck into my house today and gave my 2 DAY OLD kittens a bath.

She knew better. First stay out of my bedroom, second you can only see the kittens with me present, 3RD you always ask permission. 9 year old little girl. And when i caught her, she high tailed it home, because when i saw them the first thing that popped out my mouth was "WHY ARE THE KITTENS WET" and i have no clue how long they were wet before i came in.

Now the poor kitten, is crying and not wanting to nurse. Well it seems to try and find a nipple, but then it gives up and just lays there. No matter how long i hold the mom down, poking a nipple out it just cant seem to do it. And it cryssssssssssssssssssss When the momma lays down for them all to nurse, the other 3 go at it, but this little kitten just lays on the others. Sounds like its wheezing alittle and sneezing alittle.

And i dont know what to do.

Should i continue making it miersable trying to get milk into it (via the mother or regular milk) .. to give it a chance of survival... but knowing it might just die anyways.. or do i let it lay with its family and die piecefully and happy? Starving to death. Cos i've been watching the little thing. Sometimes it crys while the others nurse.

ANY suggestions to extract the milk from the mom and stick it in the kitten? BEFORE morning as its already kind of skinny?

OMG that is so sad! I LOVE kittens so much, they're my favorite animal. Our cat had kittens once and there were 4 of the little ones, but just like yours, one of them just couldn't nurse. One morning, we found it had died during the night... poor thing. I remember hearing somewhere that regular milk works almost as well as the mother cat's milk, so you could try warming some up for it.
What was that girl thinking?!?! Washing baby kittens! I'd be so pissed at her! Well, best wishes. I hope everything works out with the little kitten.

You can try feeding it with an eyedropper, that worked for us once but the kitten was older. Maybe a vet could give you with suggestions. Good luck.

RiotGirl -> RE: The kittens (3/19/2005 9:48:05 PM)

it is sad and i am pissed. Seen those cartoons where they pound on the head and it makes them level with the ground? well i tried to continue giving it milk. Just upsets the mother as the baby hollars alot more. That i seem to be suffocating it with the milk. i havent an eye dropper but trying to make due. After seeing the kitten lay on its mothers neck with the mothers arm over top the kitten (almost liek hugging) and hearing the kitten make these funny little noises as it breathed. i decided its best to leave the kitten there. Curled up next to her mommy. She seems content.

lets not talk about how i feel towards the girl.

Especialy since i tend to hold hanimals in a higher regard then humans

and have made it my personal duty to ensure the well being of any animal i meet

Take all five to a veterinarian NOW!!!!

Rg,

Small animals are notoriously prone to getting fluid in their lungs, sounds like either from the bathing or from trying to force feed them (I've raised animals, usually wild life, from newborn that shouldn't have survived...lots of them).

The problem is that once the fluid gets in the lungs they will get pneumonia (or some other respiratory ailment) and if you're down to force feeding then getting a bit of fluid in there is going to be inevitable. They will decline quickly with pneumonia. Regular milk won't do, their intestinal tract isnt really ready for it.

Need a vet. Antibiotics, formula, and the right sized bottle. Also, babies that size can't use the bathroom themself without being stimulated (momma kitty licks them to stimulate them). You may need to take the edge of a warm wet cloth and rub it across the kitty's genitals until it pees, unless the mother is still doing it. But if she's not then don't let it go too long. You have the time to do this every couple of hours around the clock (or more frequently if infection has set in)? That may be what it takes.

RiotGirl -> RE: The kittens (3/20/2005 7:48:13 AM)

Hi

This is so frustrating. i cant take them to the vet. i am with out transporatin and surrounded by COWS and GATORS and other wily creatures in kissimmee. i doubt the measly bit of money i have left over will do either.

Well it made it through the night but the dreaded thing that Master told me it would do was done. i found the kitten this morning away from all the other kittens and its mother. Completely seperated. <sigh> And no i dont have credit cards cos i dont need dept problems.

i suppose i could leave my daughter with the teenager across the street, hitchhike to the vet and then just plead on their heart strings? Called the vet last night, says it needs a tube doen its throat.

Course i can hear my mother in my head saying what if its all for nothing. i did call her up in va today and she wasnt much help except suggest a saline solution bottle for feeding. Usually i'm able to keep animals alive just by transfering engery into them. It calms the kitten down, but it doesnt help with the food problem.

its cryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyying. [:(]

i'm the type of person who stops for animals on the road, any animal. Pulled a dead dog out the middle of the street (actually i picked it up) and covered it with a blanket just so its spirit knows that someobdy cared.

Vixandra -> RE: The kittens (3/20/2005 9:44:41 AM)

Could you ask the girl's parents for a ride into town, since it was thier daughter that got the kitten sick in the first place?

Failing that- have you tried wetting a cloth with the mother's milk and letting the little one suck on that? I can just imagine how difficult it'd be to get the mama cat to let you "milk" her but it might work.
A soft peice of absorbant cloth, dip in the milk and let it suck on that till empty and repeat?

Best of luck to you and all of your kitties.

RiotGirl -> RE: The kittens (3/20/2005 10:23:38 AM)

Hi, just an update.

Okay, well i knocked on every neighbors door. No luck, so i started walking down the road and another neighbor (i live in a community and its got tons of coldesacks, with a main road (2 lanes) outside the community) from a different part saw me hitchhiking and gave me a ride.

Of course the vets office was closed. Its sunday Duh. But God gives and the vet was around the corner taking the seats (minivan) out of his car and on his way some where. His nurse was there told me it was 75 upfront (not including talking to the doc) and i was standing there stuttering asking if they could bill me the Vet comes over and takes the kitten and looks at it.

Says the kitten isnt very dehydrated.
Says it isnt very weak.

Tells me i need to get the mother to accept the kitten.

Something doesnt feel right in its abdomn (sp?)/stomach

says it my have water on the brain.. (and i dont know how to spell the word for the conditon)

Says with kittens this young its really touch and go and there isnt much to do

Told me to get some gatorade and an eye dropper

Restates that the mother is ignoring it for the obvious reason

Told me how to hold its head right while i feed it

So i got home, got my bottle, my gatorade and tried to feed again.
i got the kittent to LICK at the bottle. Woo hooo

i got the kitten to pee, but it wouldnt poop so i stuck its rear up to the mom and she had a go at it. i didnt check for results cos i figured if the kitten was going to poop thats how it would do it. (i made sure the momma had a spent some time on it)

So i'm doing my best. Its the little girl, all white kitten that was named Angel who is sitting between my breasts, next to my heart cos she SQUEALS alot when her siblings lay on top of her. (i figured the heart beat should be some what soothing). She seems content here. Lets hope she does well.

P.S. The girls mother isnt in town. Her very very sheltered 19 year old sister is caring for the two girls. (no she doesnt have a car, i doubt she has a lisence and she isnt allowed to leave the community)

P.s.s i did try the milking thing last night but its not that easy to milk a cat. They're nipples are tiny. my cat is a GREAT submissive, all i had to do is push her down once or twice and she knows not to move.

You can be insistant about getting the food (and fluids/gatorade) in - stick the dropper or the nipple deep into the mouth and SLOWLY deliver SMALL amounts of fluid into their upper throat. They'll swallow (wouldn't you?) If any comes out of her nose then stop giving her food and help clear her nostrils/airway. Repeat. When you've gotten a bit in try stimulating her to pee. Repeat.

It ain't pretty, but it gets the fluid in. Upper respiratory infection usually comes later.

Sorry to hear that, luv. I do wish you the best with it.

Vixandra -> RE: The kittens (3/20/2005 1:18:10 PM)

For better or for worse, that kitten is surely blessed for having you there to care for it, no matter how you look at it.

From one animal lover to another- thank you.

FLButtSlut -> RE: The kittens (3/20/2005 2:56:38 PM)

It is unlikely momma will ever re-accept the kitten. Sadly, once they "separate" like that, it is because they are separating for the worse to happen. Gatorade will help, but it won't give all the nourishment baby needs to keep going, and if you milk momma, you (as would anyone not a vet) could over-express and not leave enough for the others, and you certainly don't want that. Most pet stores carry a special type of milk specificially for the purpose of feeding abandoned kittens. This must be done religiously every 1-2 hours. Keep Angel warm, at your breast I'm sure gives her comfort, and pray. That is the best that you can do at the moment.

As for the little girl. I don't really know what kind of community you live in, and I certainly understand a parent's need to work, HOWEVER, someone needs to take responsibility here. As I am so far from submissive in my daily life, I would certainly be going to that girl's house and letting her 19 year old sister know that both she AND the 9 year old were going to take some of the weight of feeding off of you, and that when the mother finally did return, you should speak to her and let her know what her daughter has done. At nine, this is very serious, unless this child has some issues already. At no time should a nine year old think it is ok to enter someone else's house or to touch their things. If the mother were home, I would be charging her with the vet costs. This wasn't just looking through your medicine cabinet, this was potentially taking the life of a living creature. A nine year old without the sense to know that, or the consciousness to care frightens the bejesus out of me and I wouldn't want her or any other member of her family around me or mine.

Good luck with the kittens, try calling every vet in the area and explaining your situation. Perhaps they can lead you to someone who might be able to give you the supplies you need.

sterlingsweet -> RE: The kittens (3/20/2005 3:25:52 PM)

Hi RiotGirl,

I know you have transportation problems, but I was wondering if you have an animal shelter, or Human Society in your area? If you do maybe you could call them and explain your situation....Shelters and the H.S. are recievers of abondon kittens all the time and they know how to feed and care for them. Maybe if you call and really be sincere about how distraught you are, there may be a chance the Shelter or H.S. or a very kind individual that is working maybe would come and get the kitten.
I will be keeping my Fingers Crossed and Sending Possitive Energy!

There are several brands on the market. If you ask for "Mother's milk" or "Bitches milk" they will know what you are talking about. On the can there is usually a picture of baby kittens, rabbits and raccoons. It comes in both pre-mixed and powdered form. I also have a formula that I have made and have good luck with if you need it you may contact me and I will gladly give it to you.

If the vet is right in that the kitten is hydrocephalic (water on the brain), this is the most likely reason that Mom is disconnecting from it. If that is the case, the bath, although a very poor choice on the part of your neighbor girl, probably has nothing to do with its' condition.

If you have any questions, please contact me and good luck with her, she is a lucky little one to have someone who cares so much.

RiotGirl -> RE: The kittens (3/20/2005 9:56:30 PM)

Thanks everyone

you're really sweet. i just have a special feeling for animals. One of my cats brought home a mouse with a broken back - STILL alive. What did i do? Packed a little box full of tissue to make it soft, and made it dark so it could feel abit safe. Why? To make its last moments as comfortable as possible.

i'm trying with the kitten. Its still alilve. i've convinced the mom to do some caring for her and every time i find Angel off on her own i stick her back with the group. Cant carry her all the time = )

Putting the bottle down into the back of the kittens throat just made it stop breathing.

She's still alive.. still making her funny noises, but this time when i pick her up she's at her mommas feet

She actually smells kind of funny. I check her bottom.. not coming from there.

Its coming from her head

<EDIT>

ok i just spoke to two vets

One said something about hypoglycemic (spelling?) Basically cos its not getting enough to eat, its glucos (spelling?) is low and out of sugar.. so give it Karo syrup to give it some energy to eat
