Have you tried just saying something like, "well, have you talked to him about your issues? It would do you a lot more good than telling me." If they say yes, then the "then why are you still wearing his collar?" becomes appropriate. If they say no, then something along the lines of "so are you asking me how to tell him, or do you want me to tell him for you?" I've done that when coworkers were complaining about another coworker ... it shut them up fast, cuz they don't want to be 'ratted out' for talking behind whoever's back.
