They call cell phones too.
I keep my land line because of the rates I get when I call my family in Spain.
With caller ID, I don't answer a number I don't recognize. If it's important, they'll leave a message.

My hubby got a call from telemarketing last week he politely explained that 'now' was not a good time as we were on hols in Egypt. I looked at him in horror - oh the wasted opportunity of such fun he had thrown away!

The house phone line has all the ringers shut off. If anyone important calls, they call the cells phones.
Prior to shutting off ringers I would just set the receiver down quietly on the counter and walk away. Next time I walked past I would check to see if they were still there or if they had gotten tired and hung up.
